Sweet, hopefully it will be hitting other regions soon.

How is the legacy support? Can I get any PS3 stick and it will work?

I ask because I found a local place that sells custom sticks for cheap but they only have for PS3 and the seller isn't sure it would work on the game.

The game has had legacy support from day one iirc.

I tried the japanese demo. Some textures look uglier now, and they seem to have introduced that pixelated shadow effect, although nowhere near as bad as SFV. Stages don't seem to be improved at all, which makes these characters stick out like a sore thumb. If there are any graphical improvements in the stages, they are hard to spot. I am not seeing them.

After what feels like forever I finally have a ps4 and copy of the game for myself.

So how did the boss characters turn out in terms of competitive play? Also, are there any good guides on Nakoruru/Shun'Ei/KoD/Kyo? XIV Kyo feels slightly off to me compared to XIII.

Thanks, at least the shadow is better than SFV.

Verse has been a popular pick for asian players and has had plenty of good showings on tournaments. Sadly, Antonov hasn't.

As for KoD, I think this the best guide around

Oh, and some neat KoD play on the Canada Cup courtesy of Karn

Is the lack of Antonov a lack of popularity or (most likely) him just not being good? Wasn't really feeling him months ago which makes me sad because I wanted to like him.

Thanks for the vids, I'll check them later.

Antonov just isn't as strong as everyone else.

S – Best
Leona, Kula Diamond, Verse, K’

A – Great
Athena, Mai, Kim. Robert, Yuri, Nakoruru, Andy, Benimaru, Iori, Geese, Love Heart, Mature, Luong

B – Competitive
King, Alice, Meitenkun. Gang-Il, King of Dinosaurs, Shunnei, Kyo, Billy, Joe, Chin, Daimon, Terry, Sylvie, Angel, Ryo, Hein, Mui Mui, Kukri, Vice, Zarina, Choi, Chang, Kensou, Mian, Tung, Clark, Nelson, Ralf

C – Weak
Xanadu, Maxima, Antonov, Bandeiras, Ramon

This is a general feeling of Character Ranking on LINE and Twitter from Asia player. Team building is the most important aspect to know who will best suit you and anchor you at different points of the match, so for the most part you can work with most of the cast.

At least until after 1.10 when they decide to balance the game again.

I will never understand how is Ramon that low. Like sure, the guy isn't the monster El Rosa made him look a couple of months ago but from there to putting him on the same league as freaking Xanadu...

He isn't that low. He doesn't have half his tools be unreliable and whiff randomly like Xanadu. I don't really agree with that list. I felt like the earlier week one lists were more on the money.

Re: Boss Characters

Verse is quite strong, also fun to play. I've been using him as part of my main team. The consensus seems to be that Antonov isn't that good, though I think the character himself is quite awesome. I love his look and animations.

New demo looks pretty nice! Self shadowing looks good and i don't see as much shimmering on stuff like Terry's jacket stitching, which is nice. Still, some textures like Iori's pants still seem too detailed for the distance they're normally viewed at. To my eye though, the characters seem to mesh better with the backgrounds now.

Quick comparison i did with the old demo:

Demo 1

Demo 2

Training room at least seems sharper in the distance now, along with having a bit of promotion added!

Damn, I thought Verse was considered really bad when the game came out. What did the patch give him or what have people discovered that makes him so good now?

In regards to Ramon, he is functionally best as your anchor and can be competitive but his tools don't necessarily match up as well or clean up as well against other characters in the anchor role, such as Love Heart, Kim, Mai, Robert, etc. You can match him up as your middle but he still just doesn't cut it compared to the other options you have. You can definitely use him. It's not meant to be that Xanadu = Ramon, just that he isn't as competitive as others in his role in the cast.

Week one had Kula, Kim at pretty average-low and Naco a goddess, and Maxima way higher than he should be which isn't the case anymore. Verse was also unaccounted for but he has gained a lot of traction lately and is considered pretty strong.

It's only general feeling when making teams from JP/KR after the changes post 1.03/1.04 and it's intentionally meant to be ranked broad because everything B and up can be made to work and still win, versus most people misreading a character ranking and ignoring how competitive the mid bracket is in compare to the very top in team building.

If you want to dissect it further, it might look like (not in rank order)...

GOD (Korea in particular really thinks Leona is the strongest character)
Leona

S
Kula Diamond, Verse, K’, Athena, Mai, Kim. Robert, Iori, Geese, Nakoruru

A
Yuri, Andy, Benimaru, Love Heart, Mature, Luong, King, Alice, Meitenkun, Gang-Il, Kyo, Shunnei, King of Dinosaurs, Billy

B – Competitive
Joe, Chin, Daimon, Terry, Sylvie, Angel, Ryo, Hein, Mui Mui, Kukri, Vice, Zarina, Choi, Chang, Kensou, Mian, Tung, Clark, Nelson, Ralf, Ramon

C – Weak
Maxima, Bandeira

Joke
Xanadu, Antonov

But at that point you focus more on just the stronger characters and rank them on their merits and matchups instead of planning for specialists who play competitive characters. With a roster of 50 and needing planning for your point, middle, and anchor, having characters you are comfortable with and are still competitive in their role on your team is more important than just segregating the roster further. Of course this will change as the game progresses further.

He's working on really good quick starter guides for the entire cast.

It was more a case of people sleeping on him. A Japanese player wins CEOtaku with him and boom, Verse is on people's radar.

The game js basically too new and the cast is too large to make any kind of concrete tier list yet. For example recently Gang-Il has been rising up the ranks.

Yup, things will change and as of December, it's pretty much a general feeling than a consensus.

You can make a lot of the cast work, only a handful just straight up suck.

Exactly this. It's a shame that somehow this game managed to be even less popular in the tournament scene than 13 but I guess it might be too early to tell. 13 was kind of a slow burn too but I feel like I saw more people playing it. Where are Misterio, Tokido, Xian, Ren, koukou, and others to come show off characters?

Many characters are indeed slept on. It would only take one Bala caliber player to bump up many of the chars in the B-tier group of that list to S-tier status. Ultimately I think this is a very good thing.

It helps that KOF13 had an arcade release back in 2010 and was updated with a new revision and console/PC release.

The situation is different now but the game's player base is growing, especially since there are more e-Sports centers but up by communities in Japan now. Hokkaido recently got one going at Naturals a couple months back and KOF14 is slowly growing. So that's a new thing and is sustaining until summer. Last year there was barely one or two dedicated eSports community centers period compared to now.

I like that SNK, from what it seems right now, is choosing to let this game grow more past just a year or 2 before moving on and are looking to improve on it.

Between the upcoming 1.10 and other future patches, and King of Fighters XIV finally hitting arcades with the release of the new NESICA boards this summer, it should grow seeing that it is a game coming out on a new arcade board. But between Gundam, Tekken, BlazBlue, and Guilty Gear those have been the most popular games in game center for years now.

For now I guess go watch M', Cabbage, Kantoku, Gosyo, etc.

And I must say, is pretty darn awesome to see Dino that high.

Absolutely agree about Dino. I wish I was good enough to make him work, maybe one day. I feel like many other characters are in a similar situation like Dino. You just need so much experience with them to make them work but when they do it's a joy to watch.

Looking at that B-tier list, there is so much untapped potential. I just hope people play and continue to come up with good stuff.

That's exactly why they're considered as competitive and not just out right bad. Players like KOG make Dinosaur/Vice/Mature work so there's someone to watch and learn.

Like Angel is a hard character to use because of her execution and read barrier. But she's not garbage and Kayo Police isn't a "top player" but makes Angel work on point. Cap uses Hein as his anchor when there are so many other better options.

Unpopular opinion but I think Zarina is a good character but is really neutral heavy that not many people understand or can play her if you don't have a grasp on neutral. Compared to Robert where everyone knows he's good because he has every tool in the game and is hella easy to use.

I've stuck with Athena/Kula/Leona in past KOF game, and in 14 it's a scum team. But it has a matchup flaw in that if you don't properly control momentum of the match with Athena or Kula for meter you're kind of screwed.

Plenty of "B" characters who play important roles on teams of well known players. So I think team composition to support those characters is important. I think very few games have characters who are just straight up bad.

Hi GAF. Came looking for some advice if possible, apologies in advance for the long post.

In short, I'm looking for help on combo execution. I'm working through the missions and watching the demos to get a feel for timing, but struggling in some key areas.

It seems some of the combos require multiple joystick moves + button press, then the next move requires more of the same (double QCF + P, then QCB+HCF + K, etc). On some of the easier combos, I learned to start the next sequence of stick movements and button presses while the current attack is landing, but many of the executions are so hard to pull off in time.

An example of non-complex execution I struggle with is Gang Il's backdash cancel into his flip kick (Hangetsuzan?). I've literally tried hundreds of times and and can't execute QCB+K while/after backdashing before he lands from his hop. Just trying to determine if the game requires lighting-fast wild-west gunslinger levels of speed and precision to execute moves and combos, so I don't waste time attempting something which I'm incapable of doing. I'm hoping I'm missing something obvious because I'm enjoying characters, settings, and overall vibe of the game.

If it helps, I'm using a legacy fight stick on PS4. Thanks in advance!

For the Gang-il's backdash thing, try doing qcb,b+k. Easy way around doing instant air attacks via backdash, doesn't work on everyones but pretty sure it does for him. Don't think it works for Kukri but I could be wrong.

Shun

Member
It's likely that you're not getting the timing down for buffering the inputs, or you're not getting the right inputs/gating too much in and rushing the combo to get it down.

I assume you're comfortable using an arcade stick set up right? Turn the input on to show on the left in practice mode or challenge mode and go practice your dash cancels and inputs.

There aren't any stupid inputs in KOF like in other games like a triple 360 or 720 so the execution barrier is less the inputs and more knowing the timing down for cancelling moves.

MADGAME

Member
I'll try the qcb, k+b and see if that changes up anything. I never would have thought to try that because I thought the kick needed to be performed while he is airborne. I'll give it a go.

Yes, comfortable with a fightstick and thanks for the suggestion. I did turn on the input data and the correct inputs are registering. For the combos that require a delay, I can either pull them off or if not I know it's a timing issue. The ones I'm having trouble are immediate input follow-ups that seem to need to be executed with speed and accuracy beyond my capability. I'll be on a little later and can report some specific moves.

Thank you both.

Just picked this up on sale, never really dug into an SNK fighter before but am familiar with the characters just from growing up in arcades in the 90s.

I got 2 bucks leftover from the sale, worth buying the Geese costumer on it's own or will they inevitably flood the store with costume packs in the next few months? I got the free Athena costume as well but I'm a sucker for this stuff.

On SRK it was mentioned that SNK has sold the Sky Love IP and the new owners will be releasing a new pachinko game with it soon (?).

Wonder what this means for Love Heart, it would really suck if we never saw her in KOF or another SNK game again. She's very cool in XIV.

The dive kicks were the main problem I'm guessing?

Aside from the obvious using anti-airs if your character has them, the important thing to keep in mind with her dive kicks is that the only way that she can keep bouncing around over and over all over the place is if she has something to bounce off of. If she doesn't then that ends the party right there.

So just rolling through is a great option, especially if they use the full screen forward moving version (which most do). You can start rolling pretty early and still evade it, thereby getting behind her and can even punish her from behind sometimes if the spacing is right and you have the right moves. An added benefit of rolling is that she will often end up diving herself into the corner and giving you that corner advantage. If she dives into the corner/wall then she will automatically do a dive kick straight down, which again can give you an opportunity to punish.

Also, don't be afraid to block, the dive kicks don't do much guard damage and if you are uncertain of which side she's going to hit you then just roll and that will evade it from either side.

The light version of her dance/rekka move on the ground is pretty safe on block but the downside for her is that the animation is uninterruptible and pretty long. So guard cancel rolling through it will let you punish her with a full combo.

She has no invincible reversal options outside of using meter.

If you like you can try watching the matches between Reynald and Xiaohai at Socal Regionals. You can see Xiaohai learning the match up in real time and eventually shutting Reynald's Mian down pretty hard.

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag

But it's not listed on their Pachislot license page.

New articles at Madman's Cafe:

SNK making multiple new games
SNK collaborating with Granblue Fantasy
KOF collaborating with Japanese Soccer app

I like how the Prof's translation of what Oda said in regards to multiple new games being in the works has Oda saying it twice in case you didn't read/believe it right the first time.

And SNK's efforts with collaborations are such a smart move, great way to get their IP/characters back in the public eye.

(The soccer app is getting 2002 Athena -_-)

Thanks for the info man, here's hoping there's something in the terms that will allow them to use Love Heart via licensing or something if need be.

Hi, I played the new demo, will there be a shader option?

I kinda like the old graphics on shunei better.

If not that's cool, cause I love the new graphics on all the other characters except shunei.

As a new player I've been putting hours into this but struggling with hops. Rummaged around online to look for advice and found the pertinent info, but having to put in hours and hours of practice just for a jump mechanic is frustrating. No way around it since it is woven into the meta of the game. Seems like it should be easier to do.

Still practicing but not making much progress.

Have you tried the "reverse super jump" method of inputting an upward direction then quickly inputting a downward direction? It may help your execution out, otherwise just keep building that muscle memory.

Yeah, utilizing that technique is the only way I can pull it off. Right now I'm hopping successfully about 20-30% of the time using reverse super jump method. Ugh.

Go search KOG KOF14 and you will have a lot of recent matches in the past 2 months of KoujiKOG's Dinosaur/Verse/Mature or Love Heart/Verse/Mature teams.

As mentioned earlier, Kyamei is also a player that sometimes uses Verse on his team.

There are more but those are the two main JP players that use him.

Butter also plays Verse.
His videos are on Nico and I think he is a TBM regular.

Starting 2017 in the lab

Nice to have mid range pressure that covers rolls in addition to the basic back+AC/back+BD in strings starting from up close.
Also meaty far B allows to link cr.C (or even far D) but using that and the above at the same time is going to take some more practice.

I still don't fully understand why both KOG and Karn keep putting Dino on point despite being more effective as Battery or Anchor. Dino really needs meter to fully shine.

Having less options as point is the reason he uses Dinosaur, along with Nakoruru and Love Heart there at point. Since both characters start with 0 meter he won't have to deal with getting caught in EX/Cancel strings from other stronger anchor characters and focus on taking out early threats. He uses Dinosaur's higher HP tier and his pokes to counter other points like Kula. Once he's able to take control of the momentum, he can clean up with characters he feels much more comfortable with, which is Mature and Verse.

In this case he is using Dinosaur as a control.

Making unique teams outside traditional positions that work is pretty cool.

For Asia players, basically none that I know at the competitive level. Fumio doesn't play regularly and his only footage was prepatch at Drunkards2 at the Akiba reports center.

For English? Alioune but I don't think Kensou is his strongest character. Best bet to learn is to learn the basics and make it work yourself.

He uses Dinosaur's higher HP tier

Life bar is 1000 for all characters.

Also anchor Mature gets to use more of her EX projectile and EX DP (though that was nerfed) which helps her whether she goes for offense or tries to lame it out. Compared to these additional tools, KoD's main benefit from meter is damage and armor grabs, which don't change much in terms of how you can actually play him.
