Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for Wii |OT| Patch #3 is now live!

I'm not really sure it's fair to assign the review to someone who has clearly played the HD versions quite a bit, but I guess the points he brings up are valid. I didn't worry about the weak performance of the campaign in Reflex and I wouldn't have for this game either. At the moment all these reports of lag and shoddy hit detection online are the big hurdles preventing me from picking this up. I'm hoping to sit back and hear some impressions if or when some patches are applied, but it seems more and more likely that I might just have to get my random shooting fix elsewhere, which is unfortunate.

Yeah, guess I'll remove the 'reviews' section from the main post.
With one reviewer giving an 8.5 (from a banned site in here) and IGN giving it a 4.5; will look just polarizing more than informative. Plus the Wii version is getting ignored from many places (and even Activision's own press releases); so is not like more varied reviews will come around. :p

The IGN review while it had some valid points, it was weird and reads more like something general like "well, it's the same game but in low res and with some problems -4.5". Really disappointing review also because of all the time it took to be made. Most of what was in the written review was the exact same content the reviewer mentioned on a like 1 minute long video last week; (pop-in, online with voice chat, downgraded visuals) only barely expanded..and then he mentions controls, which on the video he's shown playing with Classic Controller, but never expands beyond that. Not to mention that the review also mentions that is technically the same as the other, but that at least the other have better visuals which "help". Never went into other details like Zapper support, or the removal of the numbers for the tuning of the pointer, or if the voicechat quality is great.

Yet, the other versions got a 9.0; and even with the expected visual downgrades and online problems this one gets half the score; when the other versions also had problems with the online. Even Elite, something mentioned in this review as an ommission (and affected the score in "Presentation) was not working for a few days in the console versions...and is not available yet on PC (will be available later). Even Modern Warfare Reflex got a 7.0 and this version is technically better and has more content and features in every aspect than Reflex.

I agree that "Wii owners deserves more"; but most of the review was focused on comparing it to the HD versions; when they game should've also been compared to the previous Wii versions...and while Black Ops is a great game on Wii; it has it fair share or problems at launch..and it took them 5 patches and 6-7 months to get it the way it is now (which some still have problems with).

If I had to give a score if any, to the Wii version it will be around a 7 or 7.5 (or 6/6.5 at IGN since they gave 7.5 to the Wi version of Black Ops vs. 8.5 on the others). Because even with some of the problems it is a great game wit ha nice campaign, it looks great and with a good amount of content and features. Heck, I could technically give it a higher score because I haven't had the online problems many has been having, and neither the corrupt-saved data of some; but I recognize the problems are there.

Pretty harsh compared to reviews of the previous two games, but with different reviewers, the swing in the score is probably expected.
I'd say it's a fair assessment. There is absolutely no hit detection online. That's just unacceptable.

I can only speak on my experiences of playing BO. So I don't know how WaW or MWR turned out but from what I've been reading MW3's connection issues are wore then those games. Is this really the case?
I didn't had many at launch (like in this case..lucky me I guess :p)..but some called it "super lag" back then. :p [didn't played much back then and then played mostly on the 360...this year]

Here's a random video one month and 2 patches later about it.

Googling "wii black ops lag" brings tips to reduce lag, get used to lag and other complaints from back then.

***

Slowly jumping to online; while I still suck I'm killing a few more; last game killed 11! :p ..was on 'Kill Confirmed Mode' actually..really nice mode too; played it today for the first time.

EDIT:
Awww.. :(
Checking around guess I wasn't doing "as great" while I got a few killstreaks (turret, counter UAV too); on Kill Confirmed the points are given to the one that grabs the dogtag and I grabbed 2-3 from other kills (aside mine)...so, 8 real kills? :p Still better than the average of 6 kills in regular deathmatches. :p

4.5 is fair for the online in its current state. I tried playing today, and it took 4 bursts from a Type 95 at close range to kill a standing target that didn't even know I was there. He was standing completely still, and I just stood right next to him, firing away, waiting for my bullets to count. That's how bad it is.

4.5 for the singleplayer isn't really fair, IMO. The reviewer uses the analogy that a Michael Bay movie without explosions isn't exciting. A Michael Bay movie even with explosions isn't exciting. If the campaign is bad, then the campaign is bad. Better textures aren't going to stop the issues with the tedious campaigns in the CoD series.

Anyway, it's hard to argue with a 4.5 score with the way the multiplayer is right now. And I have 20 days logged into Black Ops Wii.

At this point in time, the big three on-line shooters for Wii are Goldeneye, Conduit 2 and Black Ops. They all have their strengths and play different enough to make each a valid addition to your console library.

I am still hoping we will soon be able to add Modern Warfare 3 to that list. However, it's not looking good for public relations. The official forums have started going crazy with all manner of insults and accusations flying about. I do want Treyarch to pay attention to reported problems and to patch the game accordingly. What I do not want is for rude people stirring up bad feelings and souring the community's relationship with the developers. I'm not saying people should stay quiet on the issues but posting barely comprehensible vitriole is just going to snowball to a point where maybe we get no feedback or updates at all.

By the way, I put an hour into Goldeneye and Conduit 2 each last night and had great fun. I'm looking forward to receiving Modern Warfare 3 Wii on Friday and Black Ops Wii hopefully next week. I've set up my home network so as to alleviate bottlenecks between my Wii and the router (Netgear DG834GT) by assigning the console a static IP address and forwarding all ports in the complete range (1 to 65534, with services for TCP and UDP). That should make a positive difference with MW3, as it has with every other Wii game I've played on-line.

if I wasn't waiting for Zelda, I would have definitely got this by now... seems to be a shitty effort. Which, not that I think it was just announced and probably developed in like few months, is not surprising at all

Try playing NBA JAM on Fire online for heaven's sake. I would give that a 1.0 out of 10.

Some more positive impressions...
Is not a "big/well know site" but at least is something; since gamrReview (banned in here) was positive (gave it 8.5), but IGN was overall negative (4.5). Aside those 2 there's nothing else, well..now this one (who doesn't give a score, as he'll continue updating and giving more impressions during his playthrough). :p

Coffee with Games:
The last Call of Duty Wii game I played before Modern Warfare 3 was Call of Duty: World at War. One of the control settings in MW3 is listed as "W@W STYLE", so if you played Call of Duty: World at War on the Wii and enjoyed the controls in that game, you should find the controls in Modern Warfare 3 enjoyable as well.
As I was wrapping up my time with the game that night she said, "Well, one thing the game is definitely not lacking is action.", and I have to agree with her. While my impressions are off just a few of the first levels, if you like movies that have a lot of action sequences and you enjoy FPS games, you will probably find yourself enjoying Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's single-player campaign as well.
Have I played any of Modern Warfare 3's online multiplayer? I have. I am currently rank 7, and have played right about an hour. A few matches have had some lag issues and I have not been playing with my Wii directly connected to my USB LAN adapter, but overall it seems to be running pretty well over the WiFi.
Would I recommend Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to other Wii owners, based just on my early impressions of it? Yes, I would. If you enjoy Wii FPS games, I have not encountered anything in Modern Warfare 3 yet, that would make me question recommending it to other Wii owners.
While he may not be the most experienced Call of Duty or Wii player; he seems to be enjoying what he's playing; enough to recommend it to others at least.

Should get this game some time this week. Sort of not looking forward to the online part at the moment. If Treyarch can patch in a decent fix, then I could see me playing online lots over the next few months. Sorta worried it's never going to be fixed as well as I'd hope though.

Pretty sad, since Treyarch have been doing a consistently better job at call of duty games the past few years until now :/. Fingers crossed for a patch I guess....

I shot up to prestige rank 9 level 80 last night in an XP lobby. :p

What mode? Might as well have some fun and unlock some extra custom classes, especially if there's a chance my profile will get corrupted anyway :p

Grr, hacked lobbies. I was looking to work my way up to my beloved P90, but throwing a flash grenade at the start of a team deathmatch, I got 99999 points which ended it, pushing my rank into the 60s. Still, I've confirmed that it still does indeed still kick ass, and you can use the new Specialist streak to have all your fast reloading/fast aiming/steady aim goodies then pile scavenger and extreme conditioning on top as your killstreak builds.

There's no way I'm ever going to prestige in this due to the amount of weapon grinding you have to do to unlock attachments. It's one progress bar too far.

At least it's actually playable now online that it's out in Europe. I'm finding the netcode similar to Reflex - aiming slightly in front of people and letting them run into my line of fire seems to do the trick.

It was Domination. Playing the objectives is the only way I'm able to get enough points for killstreaks since I don't stay alive very long thanks to the nonexistent hit detection. I played with the same group for about an hour, and a few others prestiged multiple times.

If you have the Homebrew Channel installed you can make a backup of your save file just in case.

As far as i know, Call of Duty single player modes are downright unplayable due to it being BORING AS HELL. If the multiplayer is broken in this Wii game, then it really deserves the 4.5 score.

But maybe they could wait for a patch and publish a new review with a new score.

Destructoid posted up a nice review of the game. Lots of praise to be had, but online issues, again, tend to be the negative:

6.5 (+1 if they fix the online.)

http://www.destructoid.com/review-call-of-duty-modern-warfare-3-wii--215804.phtml
Now, that review is better. Not because of the score per se , but because it goes into details and comparisons between previous COD-Wii games but also other Wii games; while IGN only compared it to the HD versions.

That was the score that I expected also from IGN, based on the previous Wii-Call of Duty games (World at War: 8, Modern Warfare Reflex: 7, Black Ops: 7.5). All had online problems at launch, and the entire package (and the currently problematic online) is still "as good" as Reflex and War; yet a 4.5...makes it as if the entire game is worse than all those 3 (when even if it's "worse" than Black Ops is still better than the other 2). Even the individual scores average to a "5.9"; but since IGN doesn't do averages..."4.5".

Plus as noted earlier, the Wii version even got points deducted for the lack of Elite and the online problems; yet the console versions didn't get points deduced for the non-working state of Elite at launch and some of the misc. problems that were fixed with a patch that same week... and the PC version is now pointing to never having Elite.

Oh well, at least the reviews are now three; for an average of "6.5" from the 3 reviews (4.5, 6.5, 8.5 / 3 ) + the positive impressions from the 'Coffee with Games' website.

Well I had some fun going up to prestige 10 last night in a gamefaqs guy's XP lobby (I reset my stats when I hit 10 so as not to mess up the leaderboards). Even in a 1 on 1 private match I had to lag shoot a little! I made sure to back up my save file after that :p I'm definitely gonna wait until some patches come down the pipeline before I play any more, I tried some normal games too and it was like WaW/MWR all over again :p

New review from NintendoLife:

Once again, guess what was a main negative point?
NintendoLife said:
MW3 does retain Headbanger voice chat support as well as patching, the latter of which can only be a good thing considering the shaky, somewhat buggy ground upon which it currently stands. Plagued by hit detection issues, lag and failing to load parts of the HUD from time to time, getting a technically sound game going is more difficult than it should be for the time being.
8/10.
NintendoLife Conclusions said:
Modern Warfare 3 doesn't blaze much new ground and Call of Duty players will feel instantly at home with the game's heavily scripted machinations, so those wishing to see the series deviate from the norm are in for disappointment — and while there may be a twinge of fatigue setting in to the formula, Infinity Ward still outpaces the competition with a smartly updated, still addictive multiplayer and roller coaster campaign that are both fun while they last, but there's little sense that this isn't just more Call of Duty. Treyarch's technical prowess gained from bringing Call of Duty games on the platform shines through and through for the best-looking one on Wii yet. It's not exactly on par with the HD versions concerning fidelity or features, but considering the difference in horsepower MW3 on Wii is undeniably impressive. MW3 may not make you rethink the Call of Duty series, but it'll certainly satisfy its army of fans.
Got my copy this morning and am about to start playing.

Sorry for the double post, but I thought it would be useful bumping the thread for this news:

FIRST PATCH IS NOW LIVE Updated from V.0.1 to V.114.2
Wii_Admin said:
Hello MW3 Wii Community,

We are listening to you and are working on updates to the game based on your feedback. Today we have posted an update that should address the two most reported issues reported by the community:

  • Players are experiencing an issue commonly referred to as “lag shooting” where network lag will cause the player to have difficulty hitting an opponent.

  • Several players have reported their save data getting corrupted when the game freezes.

You must have a Wii Shop Channel account in order to download certain updates. Visit Accessing the Wii Shop Channel for information on the Wii Shop Channel.

The game will prompt you to download the update when you start Multiplayer once it is available. If you are already running the game at this time, switch to Single Player and restart Multiplayer to get it. The update cannot be downloaded from Spec Ops, and you will be prompted to switch over to Multiplayer in order to access it.

Please continue to check the forums for updates. Any further issues identified for fixing will be updated to this space in the future.

In the meantime, thank you for your playing and thank you for your patience.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to try before the patch, but it feels pretty much like Black Ops to me.

After seeing all those lag problem videos before, I must say I'm extremely happy right now.

Edit: Yep, just tried again to see if I was just being lucky and it feels great to me. Too bad that it couldn't have been there at launch, but huge props to Treyarch once again.

Awesome Disguises, adding that to the main post. :)
Haha. I literally just opened the game, finished 10 minutes of tweaking controls in a private match, then switched to Spec Ops, where it prompted me with the update. I was going to play through the campaign first, but the multiplayer is calling me....

Trying in an hour or so.. whenever this slow-ass thing I'm downloading finishes. Though I didn't had problems per se back then, maybe I'll notice something; like me killing 2 or 3 more.. :p

So far, it seems it may follow the same timeline as Black Ops when it comes to patching. First patch around a week after release, second patch by the end of December; depending of course on the problems that arise between now and then.

At least the two main complaints: lag shooting in online and corrupted save data were "fixed" in this one; so we'll see.

Yes, I like the idea of adding something to indicate the game has been patched.

Just played an hour or so online for the first time. Didn't download a patch, but it'll probably be up soon. I didn't have many problems, except for low framerate in a couple of matches. One guy had 43-5 in one match and 33-something in the next...

Those scores seem consistent with what I've experienced in previous Call of Duty games. There are always one or two guys who are just that good. Although we also mustn't forget the contributions of the Wii players who still insist on playing with Classic Controllers, turning them into easy fodder.

Regarding the possibilities of cheating, the hacked games are restricted to private lobbies, as far as I know. Those cheat scores can still potentially mess up the leaderboards though.

They fixed it!!!!!! :D

So happy. I was pretty much ready to give up on the game. My bullets are actually doing damage now. I just had two great games like my ol' Black Ops self, and when I died, it was my fault. Amazing!

Guess they really fixed it, if you are happy. Was worried that you were going to say like "tried it and still having problems!!!".

I was worried that maybe with frame drops or possibly host lag that it wouldn't be immediately noticeable. No such worry. The difference is night and day. I have no clue as to the technical side, but whatever they did worked wonders. It's really like a second launch for the game.

Guess the patch did helped since I'm actually killing more people now too. XD

Misc. details:
-Patch size is: 40 Blocks to download (39 blocks on the Wii)

Game came today, DL'ed the update played some spec ops, ohh looks like it's gonna be fun, had a go on the SP feels better than Blops SP so far still very linear...

MP and the patch has sorted out the lag shooting, holy hell managed to get a few kills in, on people of a hire rank...Glad I brought it now...

wonders if the Blops MP community is going to go strong even after this has come out??

either way a nice addition to the Wii FPS Library, I stil say GE is the best SP and CoD has the better MP..hat's of to treyarch again :D

also back from a long day at work so I may be rambling..ho hum

Post patch, I point my gun at people, I shoot them, they die. What a novel idea.

Finally, I can appreciate the beast that is the Type 95 . Pew pew.

Damn, what a difference! It's like a whole new game now. No more waking up my neighbors shouting obscenities from unloading a clip into the back of an enemy only for them to turn around and shoot my face off.

Awesome, sounds like I can switch back to burst fire weapons after blindly spraying with the PP90M. I'm definitely interested in seeing how the Type 95 handles post-patch.

So now that the game has actual hit detection, I just ran into an SnD lobby with 4 insanely good quickscopers. Didn't take them long to get used to the new patch.

Has anybody realized just how useless the riot shield is? I just don't understand putting this in the game if it just sucks. Maybe it requires leveling up to actually stop more than 3 bullets at once but give me the CS 1.6 riot shield over this crap anyday.
