The Long Dark
- Aaron D.
The Long Dark will be leaving Early Access on August 1st, 2017. On that day, Hinterland will be releasing the first two episodes of WINTERMUTE, part of the five-episode “story mode” for TLD.

The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster.

Fidel Dungeon Rescue

Fully voice acted and animated, Maggie’s Apartment is heavily built on dialogue accompanied by unique animations that match actions and item combinations. As you investigate, you’ll use Maggie to meet plenty of wild personalities, like Mrs. Marinara, Hector Cheese, and Beauty the radish. Maggie doesn’t mind being locked in all alone, but maybe you will. Pointing and clicking, chewing and swallowing, dragging and dropping, and living and breathing are all things you will have the pleasure to experience in the company of Maggie’s Apartment.

Play as Jack, Aliena and Philip and change the events of the book through exploration, decision-making and dialogues. This interactive novel is released in three 'books', containing 7 chapters each.

Sonic Mania
- Tizoc
A new 2D Sonic platformer developed by Christian Whitehead who made the Sonic 1, 2 and CD ports. The game is a true successor to the original games from the 90s era featuring lavish and eye popping colors, visuals and animations. The game will feature a large number of levels both classic reimagings (such as Green Hill and Flying Battery) as well as new stages (Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon).

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel,
- Dragon1893
After travelling all over Liberl in Trails in the Sky, Trails of Cold Steel takes us to the neighbouring country of Erebonia. Even though each subseries focuses on a specific country, the events are connected in the grand scheme of things, with implications for the entire Zemurian continent.
The player assumes the role of Rean Schwarzer, a student of a military academy and one of the elements of class VII. At first life is how you'd expect it to be in an academy and Rean will have the chance to bond with his classmates, with a system similar to Persona's social links.
Like you're bound to expect if you've played Trails in the Sky, the game takes its time to build the world and characters, but make no mistake, shit will hit the fan.
Cold Steel marks the serie's jump to full 3D graphics, but don't expect much. Hopefully the PC version will bring some improvements (edit: it does, check XSeed's blog for Durante's posts about this port) but to be blunt, outside of the 720p resolution the PS3 version literally looks like an average PS2 game.
Models and animation are as basic as you could possibly get away with when the game released.
Don't let that stop you though, everything that makes Trails great is here. Even though the writing isn't quite on par with Sky, it's still better than most jrpgs.
Same for Rean, nobody holds a candel to Estelle but forget the comparison and just take him as he is, with time you'll give him the credit he deserves.
Gameplay is fundamentally the same as in Sky, though of course there are some differences.
If you're new to the series, know that battles are turn based but you can use your turns to move around the arena, useful for escaping the AoE of a spell for example. Characters gain abilities from quartz, which are set on a grid kinda like the materia from FFVII. Each character has a specific grid and quartz placement needs to be optimized to get the most out of it. Unfortunately the system has been simplified in relation to the Sky trilogy, some people like it better this way though.
The music is great as you'd expect.
All in all, expect to put at least 60 hours into this, though its likely to be 80 or more, unless you only focus on the main story.
In good Trails fashion, the first game ends with a huge cliffhanger, but the wait for CS2 will be short.
Bottom line: One of the best jrpgs you can find on steam, playing the Sky Trilogy first is recommended but not at all required. Just make sure you play each subseries in order.

I truly hope Hellblade holds up. The creative team have talked about it so well in interviews about mental health and how it ties into the game, but so have many other games that failed to deliver on it.

There's still a 31st day, gunning for that august thread I guess

On a completely unrelated note somehow I didn't noticed my desk chair slumping forward down and to the right, on the right hand side by an inch or two and now I completely destroyed my knee and ankle.

So... Yeah make sure your chairs are actually doing their job properly. I didn't notice until it I'm now waiting until a knee and ankle brace show up.

If it's dropping cards it's probably just set to a stupidly low droprate per hour. From what I understand that's a developer controlled setting.

I really enjoy playing Pictopix. It's in the same Picross style game genre. There's a ton of puzzles and workshop support, so you can download more after you've finished the built in ones.

Metro 2033 is the worst game I have ever played then pretty good like 5 minutes later, repeat for entire game. What a weird game.

I guess I'm happy I finished it. I hope last light is a big improvement.

I probably won't be playing without UI and on hardcore or whatever for the next game though.

Are you playing the Redux versions or the normal versions? Not much of a difference but the older titles are very buggy.

There's definitely a notable difference between 2033 and the remastered version. I think you'll like Last Light more. It's definitely an improvement.

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen is the game of August, for me. I am greatly anticipating it.

WotC is adding a couple big new features, like the titular Chosen, new enemy units, and new classes, plus a ton of new mechanics, but is also bringing a bevy of smaller changes. It rebalances the game a bit and makes the base game longer. The expansion, with a few of the comissioned Pavonis mods, will turn XCOM 2 into a legit Long War 0.5, which is exactly what I've wanted from it.

This video featuring lead designer Jake Solomon (80 minutes long!) gives a new introduction to all the new stuff. It all sounds so good, like a dream come true.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is also interesting, but I'm kinda torn on it for a few reasons. The lack of Chloe's original VO kneecaps a lot of interest, even if she is directing the replacement; It's 3 eps, so unless they're really meaty it'll feel brief and unsatisfying IMO; the "deluxe" has an extra chapter featuring Max, which is a ridiculous thing to hold back; and, lastly, it just feels kinda unnecessary, as much as I'd love to see more of LiS1's characters and world.

The final game of August: Total Warhammer's Norsca DLC, free if you preorder Total Warhammer 2. It has trolls and vikings so it's a pretty easy win.

Like, tell me this isn't everything you've ever wanted from a game:

A troll! With a cape! Wowser.
