Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

Even after playing the single player and the online quite a bit, I still can't get over how close the camera is locked in on your character. Why???? They really need to pull it back just a little bit. If you're playing as a Krogan in the online your character literally takes up about 40% of your screen.

You're used to Gears huh?

Yeah, pretty much. Shooting is fine in ME 3, I just dislike the movement. It's not like I ever really liked it either, but it was decent enough for a single player only game. Characters never felt like they had any weight and momentum in any ME.

The movement is terrible. I also hate the fact your character takes 1/3 of the screen, WTF?

Got Soldier to level 10, meathead seems to be the best class so far. Others are kinda gimmicky.

Less enviroment to render on screen

After buying ME 1 and 2 on PC I'm considering making the switch to 360. I never got any of the DLC for ME2 because I occasionally saw sales on the XBox marketplace and kept waiting for something like that on PC, but it never happened, or if it did I wasn't aware of it.

This has been pretty annoying. I think the DLC's been on sale two or three times over the last year or so on the Xbox, but never so much as a penny discount on the PC. I think they might've dropped the price on the main game on Origin during Thanksgiving/black friday or during the Christmas holiday week, but there were never any discounts to the extra content.

Is this now the online impressions thread as well? If so, the MP was awful -- much like the single-player demo. The game has gone from one of my most anticipated to 'wait for the GoTY' edition. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to buy it early to avoid the inevitable spoilers on the internet.
Might be a long wait for the GOTY - I don't think ME2 ever got one :p
Really? I guess you're right. I picked it up after a few price drops.

I found the MP was brutal at first (I'm not really the Horde mode type.) but I enjoyed it the more I levelled and played around with different weapon combinations.

I just hope there's some variety past this (I haven't read anything yet, didn't even know there was going to be fully-featured MP in ME3):

Kill X dudes
Kill X dudes and stand here
Kill X dudes and diffuse/arm/go to 4 of these
Kill X dudes and 4 of them are special targets (why are they special?)
Kill X dudes and Y big dudes

Because, for someone like me, that's bound to get really, really boring really, really fast.

The enemy variety is nice, I'll admit. The shield dudes, snipers, combat engineers, and ninjas are neat. Even still, that novelty is bound to wear off quickly. I'm worried it'll just devolve into a MP wherein you simply level your characters, unlock everything, and then never touch it again.

Instead of bitching and moaning, let's propose some ideas. I wouldn't mind playing a defense kind of game. Like Monday Night Combat's money ball idea. Pick a class, set up turrents, level up said turrets, protect the money ball for 30 waves. Profit?

Or perhaps a variation of Demolition/Rush from the CoD/Battlefield series where you'd have to infiltrate an enemy base, plant bombs, defend the spot, and KABLOOWEE!!

Or hey, how about an escort mission like TF2? Set a train cart with goodies, push it to a goal, kill anybody that tries to interfere.

With the exception of the first one, the latter two are better suited for competitive play. Sorry to say but you're not going to get much variety out of a horde clone.

Personal Log, Commander Mira Shepard:

I hate having to leave Earth to the Reapers, along with Anderson, not knowing if he will live or die. Anderson has been a surrogate father to me since the Major died. I don't know what I would do if I lost him. I think what is killing me personally is watching innocents being exterminated. That little boy I watched playing in the garden with an Alliance ship model...later in the ventilation duct, and lastly, the most vivid of all in my memory, was the look of fear on his sweet face as he clambered aboard the doomed shuttle.

He could have been my son. I left others like him behind in order to rally the galaxy against this Reaper threat. How much can I take before I lose it? How much will I be tested to my limit before I break under the pressure? Kaidan doesn't understand, though he tries to comfort me when he can.

What do I fight for?

I fight for those innocents that are lost, including myself.
every single one of you who talked shit about the kid and bioware's writing department are heartless bitches

In the final game there's at least going to be more maps and more enemy sets than just Cerberus. A lot of the footage from it showed Reaper Infected units which seemed pretty interesting to fight.

I'd been avoiding it given the complaints all over the internet, but I decided to try my face code from ME2 in ME3.

I hope like fuck this isn't representative of the final build. Priestly's "no wait guys not importing will be so much more fun!!!" bullshit doesn't give me much hope, but Jesus Christ does it not look like my character at all. It is literally the exact opposite. Completely different hairstyle and colour, different skin colour, different eyebrows, slight curve in the nose inverted to how it looked on my character, no jaw line, etc. The only thing it got right was the eye colour. The only thing.

Looking through the hair colours the actual hair colour I use isn't even in the game. I like the dark red. The darkest is still noticable brighter.

I'll be nerd raging like never before if this doesn't import correctly.

I tried my face code. Suddenly I look like Eddie Murphy with an afro.

Nevertheless, some people have tried their faces codes with success. Hopefully the character import feature won't have the same issues.

Have they explicitly said the codes themselves are meant to be used from one to the other? How'd the transition from 1 to 2 end up?

Wait, we won't be able to have our ME1/2 Shepard faces? WHAT?

We will, I mean, I assume we will. Just saying, like many, that the face importing feature of the ME3 demo is broken. Using the same face code from ME2 won't necessarily work, sometimes to the point of generating a completely different face.

But as jediyoshi said it might not be built to be compatible via the codes, but instead raw data. Or it could be bugged in the demo. Who knows.

No one has impressions yet, but I'm hoping the ME2 Save Data Import option in ME3 is accurate with respect to character faces. I can't understand how or why they'd mess with that.

It's been a long time since I've played ME2, but I can imagine why the code thing doesn't work properly. It seems like the facial customization options (in the demo, at least) were fairly few in number.

... I really don't know what Dickensian writing skills the majority of Bioware critics think they have. I saw nothing wrong with any of those lines.

Picking of le nits.

Okay, if you were expecting Dickensian levels of writing, you're going to be disappointed. Personally, I would settle for "above embarrassing fan fic" levels. Those lines were terrible, and if you think otherwise, I'm just going to assume you can't be rational about anything to do with this game. Nothing wrong with that...it's entertainment and more power to you. But from what we've seen the writing is just terrible. It may get better! I hope it does!

Okay, let's see those terrible lines, and try to be rational, which by the way, you're not exactly being.

"During my cycle we forgot what beauty looked like. The Reapers extinguished it everywhere they went."

Okay, maybe not fantastic. The "beauty" line is a little cheesy, but hardly "No John, you ARE the zombie" material.

"A power conduit must be nearby!"

Ooh a generic battle line! Because that's when you spit out well written monologues right?

Skipping a few lines, because honestly those are just matter of fact things to say.

"I never knew... it was already a wasteland when I was born"

Honestly don't see the problem here either. If he's referring to
Mars or the Prothean homeworld, it again is a matter of fact thing
.

"My kind was arrogant once. It's not strategy... it's stupidity."

And that's actually a line I really like. Makes sense, does it not?
Protheans being as ignorant as the Citadel races, almost to a point where you can imagine a Prothean council member, complete with quotation marks.

Again, I really don't hear anything in that video that could be classes as "terrible" or even "bad" writing. I mean, I didn't hear an "THE ENEMY IS EVERYWHERE!!!" If whoever wrote Lair of the Shadow Broker is on board, as I've heard, then I have no qualms whatsoever. The writing in that DLC eclipsed the rest of the trilogy, in my opinion.

Quite well actually.

As for the transition to ME3 facecodes: I've seen a couple pics posted on Reddit showing the character (w/ codes) from ME1 > ME2 > ME3, and some look nearly identical. Others look like the issues experienced in this thread.
