Best navigator?

available for quite a while, it's 64-bit by default since august
multiprocess and a bunch of significant changes (new UI, CSS layout engine and extension systems) will be default in 57, just so you're aware if you're going to switch

Thanks. Mozilla's jump to 64bit has been long overdue. On Linux they have had a 64bit browser for years now, but in Windows they have been sticking with 32bit for longer than they should have. I'm still using Windows 7 Ultimate and I have not switched to Win10 yet, and I noticed that under Windows 7 current versions of FireFox get really poor performance, and once you get up to 2GB of memory usage, the browser just becomes unstable and crashes randomly. Something that I don't see any problems with under Waterfox, which is a 64bit variation.

Yeah I will install the version 57 and take a look at it.

It was always Firefox, never changed. Chrome sucks.

Of course, FF has been slowly trying to rid itself of what makes it great and copy Chrome. Web Extensions will ruin dozens, if not hundreds, of great, perfectly functional extensions. Savor it while it lasts, I guess.

Im not sure about this. Chrome is pretty much the only useable browser on my dual core lubuntu laptop. Scroll or open up another tab too fast in firefox and Im just looking at blank screens waiting to load.

In the past, I would've said Firefox.

That said now...I feel Firefox has slowly but surely got worse over time.
It used to be awesome for everything years ago, but nowadays it's got some weird issues.

Like I'll have like 4-5 tabs open, be trying to do something and FF just freezes up for like 5 seconds.
(And these aren't anything remotely intensive.)

As for Chrome, it's alright. I've never cared much for using it outside of certain things (like Auto-Translating).

Edge...lol Edge.

Never used Opera, so I have no opinion on it.

Upgrade your computer OP.

My PC used to struggle with Chrome, but then I added a lot more RAM, an SSD, and a dedicated GPU (was using integrated before) and my computer never lags anymore even with dozens and dozens of tabs open. It's an incredible experience and was a complete game changer.

It probably really depends on particular habits, but I'm a supertabber. Chrome creates an independent process for each tab, and while Firefox keeps everything in one process, it's usually pretty good at not loading tabs into memory until they're needed. I actually just swapped to Firefox from Vivaldi (which is essentially Chrome with more flexible UI options) because the latter was eating up enough RAM to seriously affect the performance of other apps. With Firefox, things are running pretty smoothly. That's with two profiles currently running, a main one with about forty tabs and a GAF profile with around thirty (threads I'm currently following, a tab tree full of hurricane season info, and a couple more to follow the Cyanide & Happiness game kickstarter). As you can see, I'm holding back because my porn profiles are not currently running.

I very very rarely experience hangs in Firefox, probably no more often than in other browsers. I think that these problems really only occur when I'm using dodgy plugins. But then, the platform matters. I'm running on a Linux distro -- this thread made me only now aware that Firefox is only 32-bit on some platforms, and that might cause some issues on 64-bit systems.

That's a very expensive response to what is surely a software problem. Modern websites make crazy demands on browsers, and browsers try to hide that by scrambling for masses of cache memory. Sometimes you can tweak the system or the browser, or install an extension to let you turn off pointless scripts and whatnot. It's almost never the hardware. We've all got ridiculously powerful hardware.

That's not true. And processing and memory requirements of many types of websites and webpages are always increasing. So you can't stay on old hardware forever and expect your internet browsing experience to remain smooth.

I don't know what hardware OP has, but I know if I had to use my dad's or my sister's laptops I would suffer.

The laptop I use is about a decade old now but somehow I manage to run Chrome, Firefox and (on Windows 10) Edge on it without any problems. This is how I know the problem is not hardware. The hardware hasn't been the problem for a very long time now.

Totally depends on your usage patterns. You might be one of those people who never has more than a couple of browser windows and several tabs at most open at the same time. Not me.

I just counted for you. I currently have 27 Chrome tabs open across 5 windows, and 80 Firefox tabs open across 11 windows.
And most of these FF tabs are image-and-video heavy porn sites, which aren't easy on your hardware.
.

Here's a snapshot of my Task Manager:

And on top of that sometimes I'll open Photoshop or Steam or another heavy application, and I love the fact that I can do all that without a hitch. No way all that is possible on a decade old laptop.

57 is the best browser out there. Performance shits on every other browser (including current stable FF) and the design tops the alternatives.

Sure you might lose a few extensions, but it's definitely worth it. Most important extensions will be ported over.

Firefox 57 is the best. It is not out on stable yet though so I use the Nightly version.
This guy gets it.

Desktop only? Or there's mobile version?

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
My chrome uses 3GB of memory. 25 tabs. With The Great Suspender addon.

It definitely chugs the RAM.

In fairness a big chunk of it is Gmail and how much memory it eats up if you leave it on in the background for a long time.

Vivaldi 64-bit runs like a dream. Fully customizable too!

EDIT: It's a Chromium based Browser, so it features the same security options than Chrome and more.

How the fuck does a single tab process grows to over 2GBs of RAM without doing something like running a big WebGL game/app? Damn.

I've seen ads which seem to basically have slow unbounded memory growth for as long as they are loaded. Probably some poorly written JavaScript which is leaking stuff. It is surprisingly easy to leak memory in JavaScript.

Anything site with poorly written javascript (whether that be the page itself, or ads) in conjunction with a shitload of media files.

I'm trying Firefox Nightly right now for the first time, but is there a way to up the text contrast? It seems like Microsoft Cleartype is like, bouncing off or something and text looks aliased and low-contrast.

Left: Firefox Nightly
Right: Chrome v64

Regardless of personal preference, is there a way for me to have the font rendering of Chrome in Firefox Nightly?

I'd probably change from Chrome to Vivaldi if it had all the scripts and extensions I use on it

that and shareware gaming websites were my netscape experience
also abandonware sites but i didn't know those were illegal yet

Vivaldi is pretty good. Combined with Edge.

I've been using Vivaldi and quite like it. It's like how Opera used to be before they shifted over to Chromium, and it includes a bunch of handy tweaks that for soem reason Chrome doesn't have (like tab windows, tab stacking, quickly searching Wikipedia by pressing w + search term) and so on. Plus it's compatible with Chrome's extensions.

I recently changed to Brave on my Nexus 6 and I love it. LOVE IT.

However, there's no sync yet in Brave. Any easy way to get my bookmarks from my desktop to Brave?

Not much competes with Firefox. Safari, perhaps, but I hate the best way Apple ties it to the latest version of macOS

I pleasantly found it support Chrome extensions and scripts like Tampermonkey. I downloaded Vivaldi per suggestions from this thread, and I'm quite liking it. I didn't even know it was Chromium-based, but it has replaced Chrome as my default browser, and I migrated from Firefox to Chrome something like 6 years ago.

How do you even keep track of 20+ tabs? The tabs are so narrow you can't read the title on the tab. I fail to see how its even remotely efficient.

I sometimes have 10 tabs or more and I will start closing tabs. For tabs I want to go back to I use bookmark or Pocket.

Multiple browser windows. Don't cram too many tabs in a single window, problem solved.

You use Firefox, which actually lets the tab bar scroll instead of making the tabs unusably small.

Is Firefox still stuck on 32bit in Windows? I stopped using FireFox because of this and switched over to Waterfox. I am currently using Waterfox 55.0.2 and it works really well for me.

Nope, 64-bit now. Not sure if it's officially in the setup by default but it's going to be.

I dont know why some of you feel that free programs need to be mutually exclusive. I use all 3 major browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) significantly depending on the site and purpose.

In french we say ' navigateur 'and not a similar-sounding word to browser so OP using navigator is fine by me :p .
Personally, I'm starting to ged fed up with Chrome so I'll make sure to check what people have to say here.

I use Chrome at home and Firefox at work. Firefox seems to memory leak all the time still which is what stops me using it at home.

I work in IT Support and all I can suggest is don't use Edge, it's somehow an even worse version of iexplorer and that's terrible to begin with. So many damned issues.
