RWBY (Red/White/Black/Yellow/pronounced "Ruby") is an animated web series produced by Monty Oum and Rooster Teeth Productions.

Long before the beginning of the series, the world of Remnant used to be covered in darkness. Mankind was born into a hostile world dominated by monsters called the "Grimm". Humanity's future was at first bleak, but due to the discovery of "Dust" they were able to drive back the Grimm and create an expanding civilization. At the time of the series' start, the world is in a state of peace. In order to safeguard against the Grimm should they one day return, various academies were created to train combat specialists called Huntresses/Huntsman.

The main characters attend one of these academies called Beacon, situated in the Kingdom of Vale.

Main Characters:

3YsOavi.jpg

Ruby Rose - Ruby is one of the four main protagonists of the show and is introduced in the first episode. She wields a High-Calibur Sniper-Scythe (HCSS) called Crescent Rose. She leaves Signal Academy to attend Beacon with her older sister Yang after being extended an invitation.

HHflA3G.jpg

Weiss Schnee - Weiss is the second character introduced and wields the Multi-Action Dust Rapier (MADR) called Myrtenaster. She attends Beacon at the same time as Ruby and is also the heiress to the Schnee Dust Company.

WbWBOqi.jpg

Blake Belladona - Blake is the third protagonist introduced and wields the Variant Ballistic Chain Scythe (VBCS) Gambol Shroud. Blake attends Beacon, however most of her past is unknown and she keeps her distance from others.

NXKOutK.jpg

Yang Xiao Long - Yang is the last of the main protagonists to be introduced and makes use of the Ranged Shot Gauntlets, Ember Celica. She is depended upon by her younger sister Ruby and pushes her to be more outgoing at Beacon.

RWBY is a very unique show in that nearly everything about it is awful, but it's such an obvious passion project that is using tropes I love that I can't help but hope it comes into it's own.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
AN OT FOR RWBY?! COUNT ME IN!
THIS DIDN'T EXIST ALREADY?!
I just thought the RWBY love was low on GAF.

There's a lot to love. It has depth that's just waiting to be revealed and it's filled with so much love. Season 2 so far is just the bomb. Especially Ep3 and Ep4.

The jokes work for me and I find the characters charming enough.

Jaune fluctuates from amusing to extremely annoying. Pyrrha is lovely, though.

I like the show best when there's comedy and action. I like the show least when there's drama, though it's earnest enough in its attempts...

Like I said in the other thread, the story could use some work, but the writing is clever sometimes. The fights are flashy and entertaining, but it'd be nice if the martial arts was varied.

Still, I watch it every week.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like it. I'm not trolling. But if it wasn't playing my song in terms of tropes and stuff, I don't know how I'd stand it. From a technical writing perspective, it's incredibly flaws. From a want-to-see-badass-fights-with-cool-designs perspective, it works.

It's still underdeveloped in some ways but that's just what I expect as a result of the lower run time per episode.

There's still a lot of room for development and IIRC Monty even talks about this in one of his interview segments.

I agree that this is totally a passion project. This is something Monty's had in the back of his head for 15 years so it's fascinating to me to hear him talk about it now that he's finally able to bring it to fruition.

Weiss is pretty ... forward. She takes bites out of Ruby on a regular basis but their relationship improves over the course of the show. To take a quote from her voice actor, Weiss is "nice but can also be a little bit bitchy".

No, the run time didn't help, but the entire season had pacing issues with it's narrative arc as a whole.

Look, if you want the elaborate version, I posted my critical analysis of it here.

Walking dead is the worst thing I watch, but this is probably the worst thing I watch that I actually like. The story feels like it's the writers first attempt at one with the truly ridiculous pacing issues it has. I'll say that it has some decent humor, and the action scenes are Monty Oum, so you can expect greatness when there is a fight (especially episode 8). The characters can be really fun to watch, especially Yang and I love the stylized fairy tale mythology. If you like those things and have a high tolerance for anime-isms and high pitched voice actors and some abrasive characters, you might enjoy it.

That said, I can't shut off my critical faculties and I have to confront the fact that this is really badly written in most areas, with the most problematic area being pacing. It has WAY too damn many ongoing plotlines. We have the foreshadowed Grimm Apocalypse in the beginning, Ruby's social issues, the criminal conspiracy going on, trying to pass tests in school, Weiss' attitude, Jaune's insecurities, Yang's protectiveness over her hair, Blake trust issues, the faunus racism, Juane's bullying, and the finale introduced a goddamn robot with a secret purpose of all things. The show makes better progress with the personal issues of the characters, but the results vary. Ruby's social issues have a nice progression to them. However, Weiss was abrasive for 8 episodes before she finally managed to chill out over stupid shit. Then in Episode 9 and 10, she regressed back until she was given a pep talk and finally agreed to be a teammate. And then in episodes 15 and 16, she's a problem again with Blake. I don't mind bitchy characters as much as most, but she can't constantly be the problem in every group conflict. Then there is Jaune, who is given entire episodes to himself, when he was already taking up a large chunk of screentime before. Episodes 11-14 are all dedicated to him, a quarter of the entire series, when he's not even on RWBY.

By my rough count, there are a total of 13 plotlines (probably more) going on in a sixteen 5-15 minute per episodes series. Look, I am all for ambitious storytelling with grand worlds and a huge cast, but you don't want to start the story with them. It's overwhelming and makes progress difficult. Case in point, we essentially know nothing about the criminal conspiracy Roman is behind and there has been no progress made on the Grimm apocalypse they opened the show with. They only touched upon the faunus racism and never even went into the tournament had foreshadowed for the past 4 episodes.

Which isn't getting into the fact that a lot of what does progress isn't doing so very well. Some of the arcs the characters go through are so generic. Weiss has to be nicer. Jaune has to stand up to his bully. Racism is wrong. These are all things worth exploring, but they ought to go into more depth than they did if they don't want to bore the audience with this onslaught of cliches. Cardin, the school bully, is particularly bad. He isn't given any characterization other than being a colossal asshole for no apparent reason. As a result of this, I enjoy Yang's character the most. She is badass and gives no shits. She basically has no plotline other than filling in the 4th spot on team RWBY, but she steals the show for me every time she does something, because she seems to be having so much fun and does audatious shit in fight scenes. And that's RWBY at it's best, not when it's trying to do drama it's simply not measured up to do.
It's disappointing, because the people at Roosterteeth are capable of good writing, but apparently they didn't work on this project. There is definitely more bad about it than good, but if you can tune out the bad, you can enjoy it for the humor, fights, and music can definitely be fun.

Still, like you said, it has passion and potential, and that's something. I do hope the show comes into it's own, and it's certainly better so far in season 2, but they're already introducing a bunch more plotlines and I hope they don't make the same mistake twice. It has other flaws, but pacing was the most prevalent.

The fights are so flamboyant at times that I can't even tell what I'm looking at. I suppose you can't blame the series for having poor choreography, though. :p

Also, I think the kids are way too strong.

I think you raise some good points. I actually read that post back when you made the thread. I think one of my posts is in there as well. I can only hope they keep up with the improvements and hit some sort of stride where they get everything in order at some point. As for the tournament part though, the
trailer hints that it's going to take place at some point in season 2. I too thought it was going to take place in the first season given where it was mentioned but that didn't turn out to be the case.

Yep! She was pretty harsh with the ladies in the first season, especially with Ruby. Would love to see your impressions if you do take the time to check it out.

The point I'm making is that they bit off way more than they could chew. The first season wasn't bad, it was just in need of a rewrite. Certain elements should have been condensed, or removed, or expanded, or had their placement switched. The way Season 2 is going, I think they've definitely improved in this area. I feel we are actually going somewhere this time. But we'll only know for sure once the season concludes, and I'll do my full write up of that then.

I know the feeling. It's basically just shoot, kick, punch, twirl, shootpunch, twirlshoot, and kickpunch. The fights themselves have no depth besides "You are a bad guy and I must fight you."

Also, I think the kids are way too strong.

That and it sometimes isn't consistent. The ep before last has Penny
stopping a truck with her bare hands which is supposed to be a hint to her robot nature. But then in the next ep, RWBY fights a giant robot.

I'm absolutely sure my friends have to resist doing this kind of critical analysis to me everytime I make them watch an episode of RWBY. They're good friends.
Oh yeah, I really like the music
I'm in love with the most recent excerpt.

Shit. If I know exactly where you are... I'm down for another watch of S1 =) I do it on a monthly basis after.

My progress on Weiss :
Trailer : "I love this girl. Something about her."
Ep2 : "Agh!! Why is she being such a bitch?!"
By End of Season : "AGH!! BEST GIRL!!"
RTX 2014 : "I just bought my first figurine ever. Of Weiss. I'm in deep."

I'm so into this trash (wonderful) show. The increase in quality between volumes 1 and 2 astounds me every, single episode. I'm very excited to see where this season takes us! I hope we get more stuff about Ruby and Yang's pasts.

I guess I'll post my season one impressions from last year as well. Mine were more general as opposed to critical however. That's how I usually approach things unless pressed for more.

Just finished watching the last episode now. Due to how the time per episode varies, the pacing can be a bit frenetic.

The fight scenes are few but are definitely the highlight as that's when things get kicked into overdrive. It's interesting that they tried to include a bunch of story elements which I wasn't expecting based on the preview character trailers. I think the show could have benefited from having a fixed time limit for each episode but since that isn't the case I'm assuming they weren't able to plan them that way for some reason.

I've been a fan of Monty Oum for a long time so it's great to see him finally being able to put his ideas into practice. Despite whatever quality issues the show has, I'm sure he's working to improve for the next project. From reading some entries on his website it seems that he's pretty much working all the time. I'm a little jealous of his drive/tenacity as that is something I'd like to instill in myself.

I see now why there's so much fanart for this show. That post about the Japanese reaction to the show gives some needed context.

I really appreciate what Monty Oum is trying to do here. I imagine this was a bit of a new experience for him since all his previous work has just focused on action/choreography. And that shows when the best parts of the show are the action scenes that he no doubt spent a lot of time working on. I fully expect things to not be perfect, in that sense I am pretty forgiving and I realize not everyone is going to approach the show from the same perspective.

Today or tomorrow I'll post my impressions of episode 4 of volume 2. I can say now that it's going to be mostly positive.

Shortly addressing the first two complaints in comparison to S2.
Season 2 has 12 minute flat episodes.
First major fight scene is episode
4.
Weiss fans are good people.

At the time those posts were made we only had season one to mull over so it's good to see things are already improving for the current season.

EDIT: You guys should take a look at the production diaries I linked at the bottom of the OP if you haven't already. I thought they were a pretty interesting look into how things work behind the scenes.

EDIT 2: It concerns Volume 2 so if you're concerned about spoilers you might want to finish volume 1 first.

The motorcycle shows up in her trailer and in season 2.

Watch the individual character trailers. They're part of the storyline (Especially Blake and Yang's - we've gotten payoff for them. Ruby and Weiss' are mostly cool fight scenes with less story.)

Also, the season 1 finale has a post-credits stinger.

I haven't seen this yet but I sure hope there's a better action to story ratio than the first volume.

If you want to know where exactly they've occurred so far
there's one in the first episode, and another in the fourth. Monty said that there's supposed to be another in episode five IIRC.

The increased time per episode (looking at an average of 13-17 minutes now) helps quite a bit with the pacing.

My most disliked character in the show.
Same here. Too much swagger4me.
I did not know there was a thread for thi! This episode was phenomenal.
It just started! The OT! I feel like we've been building to this with the RT OT in Gaming. And the something else OT in OT.
Subbed. Watching the Season 2 debut episode at RTX was amazing!
Loved it too. I got there like 3 hours early because I wasn't going to have a repeat of RTX 2013. In fact, due to my crews horrible timing, I missed every opportunity to see EP1. I was so distraught/disappointed my buddy told me not to worry about paying him back for the ticket.
2014 - Imagine my joy when they said I could just straight up go take a seat because I got there so early.

this show is actually aight. im surprised.

Not to mention having legit world building is just amazing. EP2 and 3 is just absolutely full of it.

The trailers are required watching. Monty was being super obtuse at one point and classified them as one-shots but it's becoming super obvious that they are legit plot points. I can't wait to see how Yellow Trailer folds into it all.

One of the other fun things is that pretty much every named character is based on a character from fairy tales/folklore/mythology. Team JNPR is confirmed to be based on characters who have cross-dressed in their respective mythologies.

The generally agreed upon ones. I'm going to leave out some of the smaller characters:

Ruby Rose -
Little Red Riding Hood
Weiss Schnee -
Snow White. Her name is literally "White Snow" in German.
Blake Belladona-
Belle (Beauty and the Beast)
Yang Xiao Long
Goldilocks

Jaune Arc -
Joan of Arc
Pyrrha Nikos -
Achilles
Nora Valkyrie -
Thor
Lie Ren -
Hua Mulan

Professor Ozpin -
The Wizard of Oz
Glynda Goodwitch -
Glinda, Good Witch of the North

Roman Torchwick -
Romeo Candlewick/Lampwick (Pinocchio)
Cinder Fall -
Cinderella
Sun Wukong -
Sun Wukong, the Monkey King
Cardin Winchester -
Henry Beaufort, Cardinal of Winchester (Sentence Joan of Arc to death)
Penny -
Pinocchio
Velvet Scarlatina -
The Velveteen Rabbit
