Yeah, but looking at the end of this list: http://garaph.info/gamesearch.php?t...price1=&price2=&gameid=&orderby=SalesLTD+DESC

Total known sales are: ~173,000k. That's 100,000k more.

This number is actually repeated in three different graphs :

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20080905/gf02.htm
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20080905/gf03.htm
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20080905/gf04.htm

Their source is official so this is indeed pretty weird...
Maybe there are other factors related to these numbers (like the time frame encompassing these sales) ? Just to be sure, I'm going to look out for anything I might have missed in the article and graphs, though so far there any additional, major infos about these figures.
Thanks a lot for pointing this out, anyway.

So here are some figures from Capcom's Jun Takeuchi's Gamefest 2008 keynote, which I though this would be of interest here. Pardon me if these numbers are all known already :

Sources : 1, 2

You can't do that. The columns in the actual slide are:
- Average Sales.
- Average Sales without 1st Party.
- How much 2 differs from 1. <- NOT average first party sales.

It's the same for both charts.

That is exactly how I read the descriptions on the slide, but I was pretty sure I could replace these descriptions by the ones I put... but in retrospect, that was pretty inconsiderate of me to take this shortcut, yeah... Going to correct it right now. Sorry for the misunderstanding, everyone.

Maybe they only count games released after the DS launch

This is entirely possible. But were could we find this precise number ? I guess there is always the PS2 software sales until now and the PS2 software sales at the end of 2004 to verify this.
Anyway, I would've never imagined that the numbers I posted would bring in more questions than answers...

http://garaph.info/gamesearch.php?t...price1=&price2=&gameid=&orderby=SalesLTD+DESC

Total sales since 2004-11-21 (DS launch): 68,780,455

http://garaph.info/gamesearch.php?t...price1=&price2=&gameid=&orderby=SalesLTD+DESC
SCE sales: 4,802,653

It makes sense now

Fixed the chart's descriptions to reflect all the additional infos. Everything should be fine now. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.
Anyway...

Pretty much, yeah. Problem is, these figures will tend to scare them more than they will encourage them to step up (self-fulfilling prophecy, and all that), as this has been surely explained many time over the numerous "Wii and the 3rd party in Japan" arguments these MC threads had.

Wow...I bow before your internet using skills ( as well as Joshua awesome site). Thanks for that. Makes a lot of sense now.

This is pretty damn good news.

Code:
PS2	68780455/71011000=96.8%
PS3	5619036/6211000=90.4%
X360	2952076/3047000=96.8%
Wii	21711416/22513000=96.4%
DS	98491256/103342000=95.3%
PSP	21432766/23358000=91.7%
Total: 95.4%

Even taking into account the fact that those numbers are a little older than the numbers we're working with, it's still pretty much guaranteed that Josh's database accounts for 90-95% of all game sales in Japan since the DS launch! I'd go so far as to say that given the effective range of its data, Garaph is probably more complete than any gaming sales resource ever.

That's downright excellent, especially given that very little money has ever changed hands to make all this possible.

You forgot to mention random increase and decrease, and shipment = sold factor. How could you forgot that important "features" ?

Spiegel said:
Actually, I think there's a slightly better way to do this--though without reading the article I'm not positive whether your way or my way is closer to what these numbers are supposed to be. What you've done shows the sales only for games released beyond a certain point. What I'm going to do should also include the later-day sales of earlier games:

All known PS2 software sales through latest official Famitsu numbers: about 173 M.

Using the "Sum sales through the week of:" we can put in 2004-11-22 (the week before DS's release) and then it will count the sales of older games through that week only: about 100 M.

173 M - 100 M = about 73 M from DS to now.

There's going to be some bleed between the amounts. For instance, some game's below-the-radar sales from March-November 2004 we'd want to include in the "Pre-DS" figure, but since we don't learn about those sales until the yearly Top 500 they only end up counted once we go post-DS. Thus, the Garaph number for post-DS seems bigger than what they say. Still, it comes pretty damn close..

Using the same method with SCE games, I get 15.8 M - 10.4 M = 5.4 M. A few hundred thousand off, but not bad.

Some Pokemon numbers from sinobi.

Pokemon Emerald - 1.99 million (Famitsu: 1.996 million at end of 2007)
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire - 5.34 million (matches with Famitsu at end of 2006)

Pokemon Crystal - 1.87 million (Famitsu: 1.85 million at end of 2002)
Pokemon Gold/Silver - 7.17 million (Famitsu: 6.09 million at end of 2001)

The 7.17 million seems to match the shipment data, so maybe he just switched to shipments for Gold/Silver. :/

Hcoregamer00

The 'H' stands for hentai.
Man, it seems like everything is all right in the market.

The PSP is back to its rock steady number 2 rating while the Wii holds a huge advantage over the PS3 and 360.

Wowza at both FFIV and Wario Land hanging on. Fatal Frame is pretty much a lock for outselling the best entry in the series so far and is showing unexpectedly good legs. Wario Land is bound to break 100k now - very impressive from its 10k first day, even if the absolute numbers aren’t that great.

Fire Emblem DS will pass Sacred Stones next week and should easily pass the one we got as "Fire Emblem" for the GBA.

Fatal Frame will pass both FF2 and FF3 next week to become the best-selling installment of the game.

Inazuma Eleven didn't hold.

Probably two weeks away for FF3. Still has 6000 to go. But with two more slow weeks, we might actually see it happen.

Has the price drop hit yet? Either everyone is waiting for that or, it is indeed out of stock. It was averaging around 5k per week even before Tales.

EDIT: It seems stock will be replenished from tomorrow, when the 60GB 360s finally arrive in Japan.

Rythm Tengoku should the 23th million seller on the NDS.

Dragon Quest VI and Dragon Quest IX should be million sellers too = 25 million sellers

I wonder if the DS is going to overtake the SNES (= 28 million sellers). ^^

Price has dropped now. It's definitely sold out in stores, there's little disputing that anecdotally. Even used ones are a bit hard to come by, as I think people who bought for Tales are largely hanging on for IU before they sell it back.

It depends, if they don´t release a NDS successor until December 2010 it will surpass that mark with ease. And there´s also Pokemon Platinum aka next millionseller in the horizon.
