Oh for sure it's an improper term in this case. Just clarifying that there shouldn't be any implication that there is anything wrong with actual grey importing either.

International pricing is a very tricky issue, and this is it manifesting itself in the worst possible way. Short of *actually* having one universal price worldwide - which would be an issue since it wouldn't take into account the difference in purchasing power between regions - I'm really not quite sure what the best solution to it is.

Okay, let me explain how this fuck up probably happened. Please bear with me, because it's going to sound really stupid, and I'm not defending Square Enix here, only explaining the nature of the fuck up.

- Tomb Raider comes out in Japan on April 25 2013, at the price of 8000yen (80 USD).

See, the problem here is the game is $50 in Japan on Steam too.

Tomb Raider:
$50, NA: http://store.steampowered.com/app/203160/?cc=us
$50, Japan: http://store.steampowered.com/app/203160/?cc=jp

To prove the thing works, here is an Example of prices being different:
Witcher in NA, $20: http://store.steampowered.com/app/20920/?cc=us
Witcher in Japan, $60: http://store.steampowered.com/app/20920/?cc=jp

That is the Western version. The Japanese version of the game has not been released yet and will not be released for another two weeks.

Could you show me anther game with a Japanese version page, I don't know of any.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
This sounds more like a big fuck-up than a scam. I don't think SE is that big of an asshole.

Plus Steam is kind of like iOS right? Some games are universal when sold (like one price fits all) or something?

Wait, even subtitles are $30? Wow.

I kind kind of see charging for voice in a region where unit sales will be really low, as good voice production is really expensive.

But if you aren't going to provide subs for free, don't release a localized version at all.

i understand the fuck up, but it was THEIR fuck-up, I don't see how they can legally remove content from something already sold to customers. If you get something mislabeled at a store, the clerk dials it up, you pay and take it home, you wouldn't expect any law to support the store owner, a few days later, forcing you to reverse the sale, or worse, removing a crucial component rendering your item useless.

I'm inclined to think no country's laws would support this; not the US', not Japan's. Am I missing something here?

Welcome to the digital age, I guess. Was the update mandatory? Is this similar to the "Other OS" firmware removal?

Highway robbery, this might give EA an idea. Imagine a game dubbed by Jerry Lewis until you pay 30 dollars to make it stop.

Isn't he dead? I get association to the telethons, but if they really wanted to torture people it shoule be Gilbert Gottfried and Fran Drescher.

Also something, something, Japanese porn. Only makes sense Square charges extra for Lara screaming and moaning in pain in Japanese. On a more serious note, what interesting approach to deal with regional pricing/importation.

a bit OT, if you downloaded some content to your PC, say language packs here, if it's removed server side on Steam, does that disable what you have too? so those who got it when it was free I imagine can still use it, no?

Steam game updates are mandantory downloads. Now if you were offline or in the game the whole time, you could probably play the original before it patched.

the jap market is different from US/EU market
and beside, people could mode the game and return the jap dub anytime, its a PC after all

VSXIII will release without English texts or voices. Extra $40 for English and other languages packs. An additional $10 for subtitles.

Sounds silly, but after reading this, won't be surprised!

so wait, i had japanese voices in my game before, they had them yanked in an "update" and now want me to pay $20 to give them back to me?

can't wait for someone to defend this.

At this point I think it's safe to assume their big Tomb Raider push is so they can train people to find them after they're finished doing whatever it is they are doing.

If you had the game set to patch automatically, or you told Steam to patch the game (for example, if you wanted to play multiplayer), then the patch removed the Japanese language option. If you have not updated the game since before the removal patch, or you kept your steam client offline, then you should still have the language pack.

So games are coming with features, they're patching them out, and then offering them back to us for $30?

That's some EA level shit right there.

Welcome to next gen.

How are ideas like this supposed to help you make more money? I would think that things like this would actually cause you to lose sales and make less money. Fucking idiots, just hurry up and run your business into the ground so someone else can buy your IPs.

This is a shame as it effects the japanese gamers that were willing to purchase the game on Steam when they could have chosen to get the game early through other means. Square should have just let it go and removed the game page until the Japanese launch instead of removing content.

Ah the wonderful world of digital distribution...

I can just imagine the yakuza busting down my door to take back the copy of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 I bought months ago because they accidentally included too many characters on the disc and wanted to sell me Phoenix Wright and Nova as DLC too.

what a weird lucid nightmare i'm having again of the gaming industry going down the drain. and dreaming of typing on gaf.. so pathetic lol

The way I see it is that Square Enix has now created a vacuum for Atlus and even Bandai Namco to fill in the gap they left. And given the recent big announcements from both of those companies, they are doing just that.

I'm not going to defend this (it's their screw up, they should own up to it), but you'd have to be really stupid or be the kind of blind hater a lot of people nowadays are towards SQEX to think that this will become some kind of standard practice for Square Enix games and their English/western localizations. It won't and anyone who thinks so is just being stupid. It was a screw up that they are fixing with the stupidest possible solution, but it's going to be a screw up that probably won't happen again.

the extra international version content of FFX|X-2HD as DLC suddenly made a lot of sense now....
It doesn't (their ports have always been top-notch and the most content-filled versions) and it won't be DLC. This was a mistake and they are handling it badly, but it doesn't imply anything on how they are going to handle stuff like HD ports in the future.

This almost sounds illegal. If the Steam version was advertised with subs and subs are ripped out, then it sounds like a case of false advertising.

Good thing I never supported this game in the first place, if only because it looks like everything I don't want in a video game anymore.
