Fire at Hynix DRAM focused factory (40-50% of Hynix's DRAM output, supply ok)

One of the most interesting parts is:

"Hynix, which commanded 30 percent of the memory chip market in the second quarter, said the plant it has suspended produces around 40 percent to 50 percent of its total DRAM output."

Damn. If that factory went up in flames completley, worldwide state of DRAM prices would be borked completely.

Yeah its crazy how expensive/concentrated all this manufacturing is. The article went on to say there's really only 3 big manufacturers for DRAM and Hynix is #2 behind Samsung

You are defending your post with a ''Can't produce'' but that is not what this is about. You somewhat made it look like that the 15% increase cost of chipsets will affect Sony as well, and that is why people reacted that a manufacturer just can not up the price against companies they made a deal and signed a contract with.

Who says Hynix would crank the price, I'm talking about their competitors who Sony would now have to deal with. Their product just got rarer.

Apple Supplier Fire Spurs Biggest Chip Price Rise in 3 Years

Looks like the fire did cause a spike in DRAM prices

The price of benchmark DDR3 2-gigabit DRAM jumped 30 cents, the biggest increase since September 2010, to $1.90 yesterday, according to DRAMeXchange, Asia’s largest market for the components. The surge underscores growing concerns that makers of mobile devices and PCs will suffer rising component costs due to potential supply shortages, since SK Hynix makes almost one-third of the world’s DRAM chips.

“It will take at least half a year before SK Hynix’s damaged clean room is fully rebuilt,” market research firm TrendForce said in a report yesterday. “Such an event is likely to cause the price uptrend of PC DRAM and mobile DRAM to continue throughout” the fourth quarter.

Normal production at SK Hynix is expected to resume in about a month, Seo Won Seok, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities in Seoul, said in a report yesterday.

“The operational shutdown will cause a global PC DRAM supply shortage,” he said.

Near 20% increase in DDR3 already, prices are going to suck for a while.

More interested in seeing how GDDR5 will be impacted, hopefully it levels out some before Maxwell and Pirate Islands.

While there are some pictures of the fab surrounded by large dark smoke being circulated, please be informed that the damage is not as severe as it seems as the smoke was created because the fire was concentrated in the air purification facilities that are linked to the rooftop of the fab.

Currently, there is no material damage to the fab equipment in the clean room, thus we expect to resume operations in a short time period so that overall production and supply volume would NOT be materially affected.

I remember in the past, any kind of issue with the RAM factories would drive up prices on SIMMs, whether it was warranted or not. Kind of like how any trouble in the middle east is an excuse to jack up gas prices even when it's not really related.
