I think Aeana is just trying to oppress the freedoms of the huge fanbase on NeoGAF just itching to have in depth discussions about Gurumin and Zwei. Right? Right?! Helloooooooo? :)

Picked this up last night. Thanks XSeed for bringing this over. I'm already hooked. It really feels like Etrian Odyssey and Ys bastard child.

Because of my slight OCD, getting 100% in every floor will drive me crazy. I'm on Ruins 3rd floor with 99.80% completion. Anyone know what I'm missing or where I should be looking for that last tile?

Falcom games had universal appeal for Japanese PC gamers...anyone would have bought Legend of Xanadu if it came to either the PC-98 or FM Towns back in the day. Brand loyalty's what kept games like Brandish alive in a time when the NEC games market was inundated with eroge of varying quality.

That would've been worth it for the soundtrack alone. The J.D.K. Special album rules - much better than the PCE synth.

Dunno how the actual game would run though.

If you can post an screenshot of your current map, I might be able to help.

This game is supposed to be super difficult? I might overthink my purchase decision then.

It's kinda tough, but not ridiculously hard if you go with good planning and concentrate on what you're doing. It's a fair game for the most part, and you can save anywhere.

It won't hold your hand for anything, though.

Retry Bread is unnecessary if you're willing to sit through the save menu every time you get an inkling to save "just in case." But if you're pretty sure you're probably going to be OK but don't want to risk it, Retry Bread is just a much quicker alternative than waiting on memory stick access and all that.

There is no penalty for saving, though, so if you're patient, Retry Bread is indeed pointless.
Given the speed of saving I definitely think this will only serve a niche purpose at best: I see a clear trap puzzle where it'd be useful (IE not falling through the floor to another floor and getting a new retry point that way) and am not sure how best to handle it but figuring I don't need to save THAT much, and going ahead. It's kind of like some sort of compromised quick save in that I CAN do it instantly without going through the menus, but it's very temporary AND based on a limited use item. If this was a remake feature it'd probably have been more useful just to give a true quicksave option bound to analog stick up, but ah well.

99.58%. This is driving me crazy. Can anyone compare this to your own ruins area 7 map and tell me what I'm missing? It looks like the square surrounded by 4 walls close to the top right but none of the walls are breakable.

I remember getting stuck at that momentarily, I think I had to make sure I went through all the doorways in the middle section.

Also mark the warps on your map >:/

As jdk said, it's less difficult than it is just... non-hand-holdy. You have to figure things out on your own and actually pay attention to your surroundings. If you do, though, you'll be absolutely fine.

I'd be down! ;) One of my favorite Falcom games, and I have all kinds of theories about it... perhaps the craziest one being that Gurumin takes place in the same world as Zwei 1 and 2, with the Zwei games occurring in the sky while Gurumin represents what's happening down below.

Almost done with Ruins 5 and so far it's a lot of fun. Enjoying the level up system because it reminds me of FF 2 and ES Oblivion. I was going to go for 100% on all maps, but the rewards encased in stone so far have been rather lackluster so I will probably just play towards leaving each area.

I did just notice that if you press triangle while in front of a monster you can see it's name and stats. Good to know especially now that I have started to use magic.

Had time to play through the tutorial, and a bit through the first stage. Ended up finding the magic shop, got killed by a roving slime and ended up using that revive thing...ugh. I was kind of hoping to have it for later....

So far so good! I love this game. Gives me that nostalgic feeling for days gone by when I played games on the PS1.

And the music...the music is so good.

Up to Ruins 9 and I can't say I've found it difficult at all. I've always had well more than enough resources to handle the shockingly small number of enemies. There are some cool mechanical ideas in here, but the introduction of each feels far too spread out. Resting might wreck my "final score," but I'm playing for survival right now, and if you can close a door it has zero downsides. Even on the floor when I couldn't rest, I had like 60 Healing Potions stacked up for when I got too greedy with my slashes between attacks.

At least some of the enemies on Ruins 9 seem to require the ol' Grimrock step, turn, slash, step dance. That's a nice change of pace after sitting in doorways and blocking everything.

I don't know why some people think it's going to be really difficult. I hadn't even seen that said by anybody. Is it just because people associate dungeon crawlers with difficulty for whatever reason? Brandish itself has been around for almost 25 years, and the only legacy it's really had amongst most people is its disorienting camera system (which is a non-issue in the PSP remake).

It's probably for that very reason, dungeon crawlers are usually difficult in people's minds, but here we have one that is actually.... just fair, not easy or hard, basically anyone being careful will do fine.

You can even get out of bad situations quite easily, rest, and save, this game is not unfair or difficult.

Trekked through the tower and now in the caves.

The boss fight with the
four purple golem
things was frantic at times. Good thing Ares has springs for legs.

That could be enough, possibly! Something that'd be relatively doable with a more normal perspective (or a good SNES update that made decent use of Mode 7 anyway) could be really hard for people to wrap their head around, especially for an SNES game in the latter half of the system's life rather than an old PC system. Which as noted the PSP remake would nip in the bud because, man, I don't think I've ever played a game that demanded to be redone in 3D as much as Brandish. Even those first person dungeon crawlers were easier to swallow just because of staying in a first person perspective rather than a rotating overhead third person one.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I've only played like 30 minutes, but I already know this is exactly the sort of game I've been wanting. Falcom just has a certain style that's so incredibly appealing to me.

This is going to be fun.

Ha, me too certainly. After the 87th time of shaking my fist, it just clicks off. Now I just kind of slowly nod when I fall in a pit and mutter "Yeah. Yep."

Man, I finally get some free time from school and work and I go to buy Brandish and PSN store is down...

Why Sony why?

Switched to the 8-bit music track for a while, but it got pretty repetitive. Crawling my way through Ruins 4 right now, enjoying every minute of it. Typically I don't go out of my way to explore 100% of maps...but when there's an incentive (as crappy as some have been) I just gotta do it.

Um... wat.

I quite like the arrangements, but personally, I think I much prefer the original tracks for the most part. I plan to replay the English version by switching between the BGM modes for each floor.

I will say I have gained appreciation the subtitle now

Got 100% on the first floor and I can't seem to reach any of the gray spots with the sledgehamer. Am I missing something obvious? The monument won't give me a reward.

Does anyone have a map of Ruins BF2? At 42.24%. Pretty sure I'm missing areas because I didn't drop down from somewhere lol. Already finished up to Ruins
10 and foot of the tower
. Just back tracking to complete that one map.

EDIT: Found what I was looking lol.

Clue:
Hold triangle when you drop from the lower right hole in Ruins Area 1

Yes. Me too. All dem pits.

I really like this game. It has that Falcom charm and is just so pleasant to play. I'm a sucker for exploring and filling out maps, so that right there has me hooked. It's also a great game to play while commuting or with the tv on in the background. A nice treat for my vita this January.

So I'm about 2 hours into the game and I'm hooked on it like crack. Any chance of Brandish 2 or 3 being released as a PSP game or Vita game?? Love this series alot now. Kinda has a etrian odyssey kinda feel without the turn-based system.

I really feel like im going to want to try and play the SFC versions after this. I hope the turning mechanism isnt too disorienting after playing this and getting used to the newstyle.

Surprisingly, no, it isn't -- I always found Brandish nigh unplayable before Dark Revenant, but after Dark Revenant, the old style is totally cool by me now too. It really does make the entire Brandish experience more accessible. It's like I finally "get" it after playing DR... I understand the appeal, and am totally comfortable with it now.

Thank goodness that
the Dark Zone is only
2
floors.
That was quite an ordeal.

And apparently there are still shops at this point. I guess Ares isn't the first one to make it this far.

Do the floor completion items ever really become worth it? I'm on the fifth floor of the Tower and none of them so far have been anything special really.

I don't remember where, but one of the tower rewards is an item that reduces pit damage. You also get a magic scroll sometime after that. But right, usually it's just extra junk to sell.
