Nah, people are going to let preferences/instant reaction/dislike for a company get in the way.

I love Mario Kart, Forza, and GT. That's why I have hardware to play all 3 series.

I've certainly had more fun with Forza games in the last 6-8 years than the other 2. Not that they don't offer good/great games. There have been a lot of very good Forza (Motorsport and Horizon) games during that time too.

I probably put 20 to 30 hours into Mario Kart 8. In comparison I've probably poured 100-200 hours into Forza games in the same time period.

This article does science fiction better than Mass Effect Andromeda. Bioware should take notice!

Seriously tho, I haven't played a racing game in freaking and I'd love to play Horizon 3 some time. Looks like the type of racing game I'd like.

'Biggest' or highest rated? Has any Forza game sold the numbers GT games do?

It's a good article but I take issue with the headline

I think the horizon series really put them over the top.

Great IP is the Forza franchise

What I don't get is the whole "but GT didn't come out yet for this gen." Sure, but a GT game has come out when this gen started and it has sold more than any Forza game. GT6 was released at the worst time and still coughed up 5.5M sales and counting, but doesn't count because it's not on PS4?

Forza Horizon is the series golden child without a doubt. Wheres almost every Forza Motorsport game has seen revisions in the way career mode is structured (sometimes porsitive and other times negative), Horizon has consistently risen the bar. Playground are amazing, and until now I had no idea they didn't report straight to MS.

Thanks for responding, but I was kinda answering the title of the thread:

How Forza overtook Need for Speed to become the world's biggest racing IP... Well, it's because Need for Speed stopped coming out every single year, right?

Forza seems to be doing well for itself this gen, but there have been... Four entries already this gen I believe. It's no real surprise it's powering ahead of the competition with no GT and far fewer Need for Speeds on the market.

Good article, though.

Has it outsold the Forza Franchise in the same time period though?

It will retake the lead with Sport most likely, but at this point in time I think Forza 5, 6, Horizon 2, and Horzion 3 have sold more in total since late 2013.

On the topic of the article, I'm not surprised it has overtaken NFS.

Kudos to turn 10 and Playground, they are efficient and consistent, release each game better than the last in timely fashion is very very rare these days.

So GT games have to outsell the entire franchise of Forza? Think about that for a moment. Horizon 3 has the best chance of having the highest sales in the franchise though.

think about the fact that gt has not released a title on this generation of consoles. gt6 is irrelevant, it is a ps3 game that released on an install base of ~80m

I read the article and I still have no idea what metric they're basing "big" on. It's a strange headline for an article that really doesn't go into those details.

Is it based on the number of releases? Or the number of sales across all the releases? Forza gets a release every year so I suppose that would make sense.

Well, EA dropping annual releases for NFS just as Forza was going annual probably helped there if you're talking in terms of sales at least.

I can't read the article at the moment anyways, but do they mention Mario Kart? I mean, I was under the impression MK8 had sold more than every Forza game this gen combined, or is that wrong?

I see we have no real desire to discuss the article itself, only the clickbait GI title.

I think it's interesting to see how they were a little shocked by FH3. I hope they continue to work with Playground...they really have something special there. It's a good story about how they basically have just taken Forza and ran away with it, even surpassing the mainline series in quality IMO

The title is still wrong. "...world's biggest racing IP."

Anyways, I hope Turn 10 decide to look at how Playground structures their career modes, and how they build on each release, and then emulate that into the Motorsport games. FM4 to me had the best career progression. But it's great to see that the spin off series has now become the IT child of the franchise.

If a Franchise sells 5.5 million in 4 years and another Franchise sales 6, or 7, or 8 million in 4 years...then which is bigger at that point in time?

When GT Sport hits I expect GT to retake the lead rather quickly in the "racing" world, but at this point in time...games with "Forza" in the name have sold more. One game versus multiple, but that's because we've only got 1 GT game...I'm sure people would love to have more than one branded GT game. The number of games doesn't matter when talking a "franchise". Now if we want to break it down to the single best selling game and ignore the rest...I suppose we could :).

As far as lifetime sales GT takes the cake and runs with it.

There's speculation that Forza Motorsport 7 may include off-road, street, and track racing this time. Take that with a HUGE grain of salt though.

Pretty sure they are referring to this gen. You know the gen that has been going on for a few years

There have been

- 2 NFS games
- The crew
-Driveclub
- project cars
- Asseto corsa
- 2 mainline Forza and 2 Horizon games

Of all of them Forza is the biggest. Nobody ever counts Mario kart when talking about racing games.

Semantics aside, it is the best racing game on this current generation imho. I have not spent the time on any other racing game anywhere near the amount I have time I have spent playing FH3. In fact I would say you can probably combine the #2 and #3 games on my list and it still would not add up to how much time I have spent with FH3.

It is damn good game, and deserves all the accolades. No doubt about it.

I've felt like the Horizon games were a natural progression to NFS attempts at open world. I'd love to see Police chases in them as a separate mode (with actual take-downs).

EA tried to shoehorn NFS into an open world racing game. Forza and Forza Horizon were built from the ground up to be a racing sim and an open world arcade racer.

Changing developers and killing off studios didn't help. Changing from outlaw racing to street racing to open world racing to street racing doesn't help. We know what to expect from both Forza titles. I have no idea what the next NFS will be about and when it will come out.

And then there's release gaps. Some years there's a NFS game. Some years there's nothing. I think there's a NFS game coming out this year. No idea. On the other hand, I know that there will be a Forza game in September.

EA couldn't have handled the NFS franchise any worse than if they had intentionally fucked it up.

Best thing Forza did is split up into two series of games: circuit racing mainline Forza series, and open world-ish more zany Forza Horizon. I think most people are going to gravitate towards one or the other and while it sounds like fairly minor differences between the two it really feels very different to me, sort of serious Jason Bourne vs Fast and Furious.
