Biden disses Clinton: ‘I never thought she was a great candidate. I thought I was...'

Would have loved to have a President Biden, but I respect his decision (which was a tough one) after his son died.

Miss you Joe!

It absolutely is a sexist comment to suggest that she's only gotten where she is because of her (married) name. Unless you're talking about her maiden name, but I don't see how she would have been helped much by the name Rodham.

Well I'd say the name got her foot in the door and she built her resume from it so it was kind of a symbiotic thing. There's nothing exceptional about her personality and demeanor like there was with Obama that would have justified her meteoric rise to compete for the presidency in an alternative universe where she wasn't a Clinton.

She's certainly a capable politician and would have been a competent president. So are a number of other Democratic senators and politicians.

From leaving the White House as First Lady in 2000 to running for president in 2008?

That's pretty quick!

I think Sanders backers would have had just as much distaste for him
Nah. I was a Sanders voter that loved Biden, Obama, and Warren but never couldn't get excited for Hilary in 08 or 16.

Voted for her in 16 of course, but just didn't care for her beyond her platform.

You all are defending the same Biden that called Obama the first "clean and articulate" African American candidate. There's a reason this guy wasn't at the top of the ticket in his earlier election runs.

donald trump is in office. literally any other option other than satan looks pretty appealing right now, especially a moderate democrat.

I question the progressiveness of any Sanders supporters who would have preferred Biden to Clinton.

Biden is what an ACTUAL moderate Democrat looks like, going by his voting record.

But I guess he's got that pervy uncle thing that makes him so likable.

I'm amazed that anybody would seriously argue otherwise at this point. Clinton would have been a great president, but she ran a lousy campaign and was extremely unpopular. The vast majority of that unpopularity is from deceptive Republican propaganda they've been pushing for decades now, but you can't pretend that isn't a problem just because it's unfair.

biden would have been a better option against trump therefore I would prefer him to clinton

I would have preferred a great many people to trump

Hillary has been in US politics since the late 80s, early 90s. Hell part of the hate of her came from the fact she wasn't a traditional "smile and wave/arm candy/stay at home/photo-op" first lady but that she was actually politically active.

I question the progressiveness of any Sanders supporters who would have preferred Biden to Clinton.

It always comes down to personality for many folks in the end.

Complain that Clinton wasn't progressive enough but cheerlead for Biden who is to the right of Obama. Clinton ran a pretty meh campaign but on a basis purely consisting on which person I'd rather have as President (ie setting aside how easily they would have winning said presidency) anyone saying Biden over Clinton is trippin, probably sexist, and definitely has bought into the 30 year smear campaign, uninformed on actual politics, and votes purely on personality.

At least with the Reddit Berners his main advantage was not being a woman. The sexism that permeates every corner of Reddit drove a lot of their Hill hate.

People realize that, had Biden chose to run, it would have been his third attempt, right?

what does that have to do with what I said? are you implying that biden would have been a worse candidate against trump than hillary? we can just go ahead and agree to disagree if you think the answer to that question is yes.

People were crying about Hillary not being truly progressive... now y'all bring up centrists to nominate?

People were saying it was all about policy... until it's Hillary, and now it's all about charisma, aka "tell me what I want to hear"?

People were saying it was all about appealing to real progressives... until Bernie came out and said we should appeal to more racists, and now y'all want someone more appealing to center-right voters?

Look, why don't y'all do us the favor and admit y'all hate women & niggas so that we don't have to do these threads every other week, months after the election has ended? At least we'll all know where people stand and we won't have to deal with contradictory logic.

It goes both ways.

Sanders too socialist for HillaryGAF, Biden too right... makes one wonder when did the Democratic Party became the one-woman show.

Joe, you seem like a nice guy and I know you had a reason for not running, but considering you didn't and it's been six months it's probably time to shut up about what a great candidate you might have been.

It's not anyone's fault. His son died. He was in no position to run for office.

And yes, Diamond Joe would have been the far easier candidate to run and would have bodied Donald in every debate. Infinitely more charismatic than Hillary or Donald...and we know it's a popularity contest to those "independents" anyway.

I meant who's fault is it that he was a better candidate, despite Hillary being more qualified.

I'm basically bitching about the "good President =/= good candidate" conundrum.

He was blue dog territory.

Do you think his 2016 platform would have really been any different than Hillary's?

yah. hillary may have been to the right of bernie but she adopted a lot of his ideas when he went out. biden would have been different.

yeah it's a pretty fucked up reality that we live in

Yes. Very different.

By 2015 he was calling for four years of free college, supported single payer, was defending black lives matter and speaking out about institutional racism.

I just don't think it varies that heavily, especially if Bernie jumps in and he's forced to take from his platform like Hillary did.

Let me put it this way:

When was the last time Biden spoke as frankly and honestly about racial issues as Hillary did in her primary campaign?

The fact that Hillary was willing to say stuff like this is why I felt she absolutely was genuine on racial issues:

https://twitter.com/hillaryclinton/status/695800564924420098?lang=en

Obama already showed the solution to this conundrum:

- Run a New Blood candidate on the top of the ticket with little to no skeletons in the closet

- For VP picked a very experienced, old white guy that eases the minds of those worried about experience.

Yup. That's really what it comes down to. People aren't consistent with their solutions but they're really consistent with who they are opposed to.

I'm really confused where this comes from.
She was Senator for 8 years, followed by 4 years as Secretary of State. Even if you want to tack on her time as First lady for both Arkansas and Pres. She will still fall about 10 years short of Biden.

Biden has 25 years as a Senator, 8 years as VP, With multiple years on several of the Senate Committees

And this is exactly what would have sank him against Trump.
