Sounds like it could be a lot worse, but it could also stand to be a little better.

That strange promotional artwork in the Protodude review is interesting.

Seems like a cool package but as someone who owns the original games (and other collections containing some of these games), there'd have to be something special to sweeten the deal for me. Something new (SFC Rockman & Forte in English) or insanely rare and expensive (Saturn MM8) would have been enough for me.

Just a reminder that the above Mega Man Anniversary Collection was released 13 years ago on PS2, GC, & XBOX and it included Mega Man 1 to 8 + few goodies. Look into your collection, you may own it already :p

I own that collection, but I'm getting this for support+emulation/port quality.
Plus I can play the JP games.
Heck the games in that PS2/GC compilation are based on the PSOne games anyways :P

I do own it and I still bought LC1 and am buying LC2. That first collection had shit tier emulation for all the games (especially the six NES ones), weird sound glitches and input lag on 8 and missing Mode 7 graphics on MM7 among other things.

I'm happy I owned it since that's how I got my first Classic Megaman fix but it doesn't substitute the stellar versions of LC1 and I assume LC2.

It's a shame this wasn't combined with the first collection because I don't feel like there's enough here to justify a separate purchase. Megaman 7 and 8 are the black sheep of the original series, 9 is ok, and 10 is... kind of there.

9 is arguably better than Mega Man 2. At the very least, it can comfortably sit alongside it.

Here's GameXplain's review (mine).

I liked it a lot.

The Anniversary Collection comparisons really are bordering on absurd at this point. Believe me when I tell you that the emulation in Legacy Collection 2 is genuinely excellent across the package. Playing 7 and 8 in MMAC is a significantly inferior experience any way you look at it. You're also still getting these games at $5 a pop in this collection, which is a steal - especially considering these are the best versions of each game since the OG releases.

By the way, I have to recommend that you all try out the CRT filter at least once in each game. Look, I know - I usually find CRT filters to be a novelty in most retro collections too. But this one? It just looks better for some reason. I can't figure out why, but it really suits the games in this collection. I didn't even use the filter in MMLC 1, so I don't know, but there it is.

Happy to read that the collection seems to be no rush job according to Protodude! The audio stutter he mentions for MM9 (why 9 of all games!?) does worry me a bit, but in general it sounds about what I wanted. Guess I'll be getting it physical day 1 after all! So happy about this!

Sorry I doubted you Cap. Seems like you've learned a bit after all.

It was also quite shit and a good argument in favor of both Legacy Collections lol.

I'd rather we keep getting different collections with smaller numbers of games that are well emulated than crap like this.

There's no "arguably" about it. 9 is handily better than 2. ;)

And 10 is better than 9. But only a little.

9 is probably great for people who've beaten a majority of the Mega Man games, and wanted something a little tougher. But the difficulty curve is way better for Mega Man 2, for one thing. 9 felt downright malicious in spots, very early on. It reminded me of Sonic Advance 3 and how it loved to set up annoying traps for the player.

Yes, I feel the same.

The main reason I consider 2 better than 9 (and 3) is that it basically has the perfect difficulty balance. It's not easy but it's quite manageable.

3 is not too hard either but it gets annoying in places and 9, while my second favorite, is arguably the hardest classic MM game. I mean, I can beat it, but it can be exhausting at times.

And about 10, I liked it and it's up there among the best, but IMO these three are on a league of their own.

That's great to hear about the CRT filter, that's what I wanted :) Now I can't wait to get back and play these games tonight... Also, glad to see someone else who really enjoyed 10, I felt it was an excellent game with some of my favourite bosses in the series (NItro and Solar especially). Excellent soundtrack as well, plus that Fortress stage 1 boss fight... loved it!

Also, for those that feel MM2 was more balanced difficulty wise than 2-3. Well I do probably agree in theory, but... Air Man. Seriously, try beating him (with your default buster) without taking any damage... or Quick Man for that matter (who has a glitch where it makes it impossible to dodge a couple of his attacks). I've managed to get the Mr Perfect trophy for MM10, but can't for the life of me beat Air Man without taking at least a couple of hits of damage.

But it doesn't need it? The game felt perfectly designed around never needing to slide under anything (in my opinion). I personally liked the return of the MM2 limited move set, I especially don't miss the charged buster shot - glad that's gone for sure.

They really dropped the ball with the artwork, what is the point of zooming if everything is so low res?.

Having a blast with MM9 right now, the game has aged like fine wine.

I know the developers were different for each game but it would have been pretty cool if there was a shell that combined the 2 legacy collections if you own both so you wouldn't have to boot each collection separately.

It didn't need slide because it wasn't designed around having slide. But I enjoy slide because it gives you another way to get around enemies if needed, and more mobility.

9s still probably top 5 for me regardless, I just like slide.

That's fair, but I've always felt the western "Normal" mode in Mega Man 2 was a bit too easy. The "Difficult" mode is actually the standard mode in the Japanese version (the only one, in fact) and I feel it makes the game much better.

Oh I agree, they sort of redeemed themselves with that one and I've kept my copy to this day. It's just that the MMAC still left such a bad taste that I'm always wary of Capcom's emulation efforts, and it's an example of why I'll always prefer quality over quantity with these packages.

I think the only group of people I can trust nowadays to pull off quality, relatively sizeable retro collections perfectly nowadays is M2.

I'm playing the compilation now.

Japanese versions are included, and Rockman 8 maintains all the Japanese vocals aside from the opening musical number. Games look fantastic -- sharp and vivid -- with no input lag. The optional scan-line filter is a bit more subtle this time, and while I generally don't like 16:9 border artwork, the borders included here are actually tastefully done.

Really happy with it so far, although the collection would have been especially noteworthy if it had featured Mega Man & Bass and the Saturn version of 8.

Edit: And as expected, MM8 does feel snappier now that the majority of its loading screens have been cut and the game boots straight to the title screen skipping the opening logos.

Thanks for the info, sounds excellent, didn't expect to get the Japanese voices for 8 as well (even in the cutscenes?) Sounds like a pretty decent collection ports wise.

Yep, all of Rockman 8's FMVs are in Japanese, except for the opening music video (which was replaced with MM8's) and possibly the ending credits (haven't gotten that far yet).

I'd be happy with this development team handling the rumored Street Fighter anniversary package.

They're not as well known but Gotch Technology is also very competent. They mostly work with Namco Bandai now but they did J Legend Retsuden on 3DS, the Arcade Game Series on PS4/XOne/Windows and the various Namco Museums on PSP, PS3, Wii, 360 and Switch. They also used to be known as Rutubo games, who did a bunch of old arcade conversions for Sega on 32X, Saturn and Dreamcast.

Boo, there are no save states here, only checkpoints (respawn at certain areas) and you can load at those checkpoints. You can save anywhere but it will spawn you back to the nearest checkpoint.

Gotch was formed by ex-Rutubo people but they're not the same company, Rutubo still exists and continues to very occasionally work on things.
