PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

what firmware?--- Latest and greatest! (1.52)

purchased from where?---- Amazon

what is your A/V set up like?---- All HDMI; TV input (TV has Dolby, works on PS3)

what resolution do you want to output in?---- 1080P (no issues)

were you able to get any video signal or none at all?---- Perfect signal minus this PCM nonsense

can you hear audio?---- Yes

I just can't figure out why it wont output in Dolby. Games, movies nothing. Always PCM. Have the audio priority on the system set to Dolby, TV is set to Dolby. The ps3 Always outputs in Dolby (not the (XMB) OS)
Anyone have a solution or experiencing something similar? Maybe the Dolby portion of my TV doesn't have HDCP? (best i can think of)

I think its safe to say that the PS4 can become quite audible and I've come to the conclusion that it is normal. I'm on my second one now, and both are equal.

After the last update, my PS4 cannot hold a connection to the internet. It literally disconnects every minute or so with an annoying notification every time. Never did this before the update and every other device I have is working fine.

Hey, does anyone know what the return policies are on dual shock 4s?

I bought mine from Amazon at the US launch (spare controller) and it shipped about a week before PS4 launch so it's probably been about 40 days and tonight the R1 started sticking and I'm pretty sure it's going to get worse and worse until it just sticks in when I press it and doesn't pop out and then it'd be useless.

Any chance I can get it replaced by Sony or Amazon at this point? Or am I out $60+tax and need to get a new controller?

Just checked with Amazon, my return period for the order ended on Nov 30th :\

Did you try popping R1 out of the controller and cleaning the plastic bits with a microfiber cloth and canned air? It worked for me but I had to do it a second time a few days later. But it's been about a week and I haven't had any problems since.

Just unboxed my PS4 and its bricked

what firmware?--- unknown, haven't seen anything yet

purchased from where?---- Amazon

what is your A/V set up like?---- HDMI to Panasonic U50 plasma

what resolution do you want to output in?---- 1080P

were you able to get any video signal or none at all?---- None at all, just flashing blue light

can you hear audio?---- Nope

I thought we would be through the faulty amazon units by now, but I guess not. All I get is a flashing blue light and the TV says no input. Tried removing the HD and booting, nothing. Tried booting into safe mode, can't. Now trying firmware on a USB, nothing happened

It wasn't just amazon units and that sounds like the classic blue light of death. If you can't get it to go into safe mode by holding the power button down for ten seconds (should beep once on press, twice after holding for ten seconds) then you definitely have a brick. Call Sony and they'll get you a replacement at no cost.

Yeah it does, happened to me too. If it's any consolation they were great about it and I got my replacement within a few days.

Yeah, I have no doubt they will deal with it swiftly, I'm just not hopeful that I'll be able to get a replacement before christmas which is lame as I planned to be a complete slob that day.

edit: update: called them and set up repair. 3 days to get box, 7 days to get replacement, oh well. :(

I have not. I think I'd be afraid of breaking it while trying to "pop" R1 out. I've broken many things in the past when I try to take them out by force. I'll look for a youtube guide ;)

I had an issue with the BT receiver in the PS4 where commands would "stick" or become non-responsive (i.e. helplessly spinning in circles while staring at the sky in a FPS). This was not seeming to be a common issue when researching online, so I feared that it was because my PS4 was in a media cabinet - though no other systems (including a PS3/Wii U) has had an issue.

Well, today I received my replacement PS4 from Amazon and so far I have had no issues. Hopefully it stays that way. I just wanted to post this here in the event someone else is having a similar experience.

Props to Amazon's awesome return process, btw.

EDIT: the issue with the returned PS4 was experienced with both the included controller and an extra controller I had purchased.

I just wanted to report my experience with 2 PS4s. Disclaimer: the consoles were in a very open area at ambient temperature. It's assumed that the game install is done (the disc does not spin anymore):

First PS4: day one KZ bundle. As soon as I started playing KZ I knew something was not right:
Seconds after the cutscenes end, in the kid bedroom at the beginning of the game, the PS4 fan started spinning up and the noise increased until the fan reached what can only be the maximum speed. The noise was comparable to a hair dryer, I'm not even joking.
I debated sending this PS4 back for a week because in any other usage it was at "normal" noise level. Maybe Resogun was a bit noisy but not on KZ levels.
Finally, I sent it back and was lucky to get one back within a week.

Second PS4:
First few seconds in the kid bedroom: it's dead silent. After a dozen of seconds, the fan kicks-in and stabilizes at acceptable noise level. It even seems to slow down after a while. Sounds like normal, functionnal, heat management. I am relieved.
That being said: it's nowhere near silent. I wish people saying it's dead silent elaborate a bit. I mean, dead silent ? like no fan at all ? in a Killzone playable section ? I don't know if that's even possible. That heat has to go somewhere.

Anyway, I know this is suggestive but I would rate the PS4 noise level at "acceptable" for heavy games to "good" for anything else (watching BR, vidzone, OS).

Mine is pretty quiet, from your description it sounds quieter than even the second one you received. The only time I notice any sound coming from it is when the disc drive spins up on boot. Other than that, I can't even hear it even after long gaming sessions unless I go right up to it.

I do have a second one that I keep saying I'm going to test to make sure it even works, but maybe I'll try it out this weekend to do some comparisons.

I can definitely hear my PS4 at all times if I turn the game volume down, it's never "dead silent". That's simply not possible, a fan will always make some noise. Maybe people who claim this simply mean that the game audio easily overpowers the fan noise, in which case I agree. My PS4 is never loud (my PS3 Phat probably makes more noise just idling on the XMB than my PS4 does while playing Resogun or AC4 - haven't played KZ on it), it's just never completely silent either. Seems pretty normal to me because, again, there's no way it could actually not make any noise at all.

So yeah, I too wish people would stop saying their PS4s are absolutely silent when that clearly cannot be the case. If you mean that you don't notice it over the game audio, then say that.

Thanks for your impressions. Any discussion about sound is very difficult, because everyone is experiencing it differently. I for one am extremely sensitive to noise - to the degree of investing 200€ in my desktop-PC just to have it run dead silent in idle and multimedia-applications.

With PS4 I imagine a lot of people sitting quite far away from it, some right next to it and these consoles really seem to be a bit more quiet horizontally than vertically. Imho the load-noise is close to the PS3-Slim. Very much noticable, but not hairdryer/launch-360-loud. It is okay for me but I really envy XBO-owners for their extremely silent console.

Overall I am very happy with the PS4 so far, just waiting for driveclub, infamous and the wave of indies. HDD-capacity is already over 50% for me though. I think about waiting until spring and see what kind of replacement-HDD I will get for my system. I was initially sure of buying that 1TB hybrid but I really do not mind the loading-times of my titles so far. So maybe I will get a 1,5TB magnetic drive. Welp... lets see in spring!

Hey, general question for PS4 owners. So my system's been running pretty great for a month+ now. No crashes really, runs incredibly silent and not too hot, and yeah, just about perfect outside the R1 sticking button on a controller I ran into this week.

BUT, I do have one weird oddity that I'd like to see if everyone else shares or if there's something wrong with my ps4:

Accessing the PS4 store is...weird. If I load up the store right after booting the system, it takes a few seconds and then pops up fine. But if I've been playing games and quit and close the game and then try to load the store...I get a sky blue screen with the loading spiral spinning and...it never loads. It doesn't freeze the system or anything, so I just have to log out -> log back in -> hit enter on the store and then it'll load fine. But it's like once it's starting caching and running other games it just cannot load up the PS Store most of the time. It's such a weird oddball glitch and the only strangeness I'm encountering with my system. I wonder if it could have to do with a NAT thing or something? ACIV said my NAT is bad for the PS4 connection.

Not sure if hardware or software related but my girlfriend is having problems with video and the sharing. It seems the video folder is always empty when she tries to share, any ideas?
She has facebook linked and everything she can see enabled after pressing share>options.

Got my PS4 from the latest Best Buy shipment today and it's DOA. I tried it on 1 TV and 2 monitors. I just get the blue light, no signal, and it won't go into safe mode. Says it was manufactured in November.

This blows.

Unless there's a trick I'm missing I'm going for a refund tomorrow.

Not really a hardware issue, I don't think...

I'm getting an annoying error (CE-34878-0) when trying to play AC4. I get it during the first save, before I can play anything, as it's creating the initial save file. I read that this is supposedly something to do with Bluray drive? My game is digital.

I've had this same issue since launch.

The system is most certainly not DEAD SILENT.

-Watching Netflix, sure, i don't hear a thing.

-Watching a Blu-ray, in absolute silence you can certainly hear the disc drive.

-Playing a graphically demanding game (Killzone: Shadow Fall) at low volumes the fan is clearly audible, though not annoying. During gameplay/action the game's audio overpowers whatever noise the system is making.

Nonetheless, the system makes noise(es)... as you should expect. I take no issue with the design/performance.

Just almost shit my pants. PS4 froze when I was going to Netflix. Controller and buttons on the console were unresponsive. Held down the power button for 15 secs so it restarted. Booted up, system had the blue light and no signal onto the TV. I take the disc out then it goes to safe mode and restarts. Working fine now but damn...

It's definitely not too loud, but I'd happily take a slightly larger console if it meant it would be basically silent like my XB1 is.

Since the PS4 is now available at Amazon, I want to know if most defective units came from them? My friend bought two PS4's from Amazon at launch that didn't work.

First PS4:
Kept ejecting the disc, Netflix and huluplus didn't work right. Called and even after I did everything Sony support wanted me to do it made the problem got worse because the PS4 kept trying to eject a disc that wasn't in it. Sent it in and got it replaced.

Second PS4:
Came in during final week so my kids mainly used it for Netflix and Huluplus. After finals I put in The Boondocks Saints bluray and the PS4 ejected the bluray and turned itself off. Even with a specialist we couldn't get it to turn back on. Sent it in and got it replaced.

Third PS4:
Does not run Netflix and Huluplus right at all. Randomly freezes and runs slow as hell. Called in multiple times, wasted money on a flash drive, follow the specialist instructions and the PS4 doesn't read that there's a flash drive plugged in it. After a couple of hours the specialist said that there's nothing I can do and that he has never seen this happen before. I even gave him the error code that popped up and he said they haven't put that code in the system yet. So I got to call back Monday so I can speak with someone in corporate. I have no idea what that means. I've spent more time trying to fix my PS4's than I have playing them.

Yours isn't, maybe. Mine is. In-game, with the TV muted, I have to be within about two feet to hear anything from it. It's easier to just hold my hand up to the vents to feel if the fan is blowing than to try to hear if it is.

My PS3 is how you describe. Not so my PS4.

Same here. Thinking of importing from Amazon next week but I'd rather avoid faulty batches. What's the current overall reliability of the system?

My PS4 froze again. Seems to happen when I am accessing the network settings or if the WiFi goes out. I hold the power button for a while to see if it turns off and it doesn't so I have to end up pulling the AC cord. Brutal.

Everyone that say that their PS4 is dead silent hasn't played Killzone SP. And that's a fact.
I have 3 friends with PS4s and we hooked them up together at my house and compared them on beginning of chapter 7. All of them did the same thing: silent for 1min and then jet engine for 1min then it lowers down so you can hear it if the tv is on low volume but it's not an issue.

All four of them was exactly the same. However, in AssCreed/NFS you can't hear it even if you wanted too.

Its getting really weird how half of the GAF got their special "dead silent" edition of PS4 and I did not. Or maybe we live in different conditions.

The only game thus far that's ellicited any sort of measurable fan noise from my PS4 is Killzone. Everything else has pretty much what you can define as silent unless you mash your face against the console.

I have mine vertical too, and that supposedly increases noise levels.

Any ideas? PS3, apple TV all work fine, I've tried several different HDMI's cables in all the available ports but still no picture :-(

What happend with my PS4?

original.1387787860.jpg

Blacklight Retribution has the same issue. Cutscene and menu hasn't this bug.

This screenshot from PS4.

First PS4: Got one from Amazon and it was defective out of the box. Kept freezing and turning off around 2-3 minutes after boot, with random visual glitches popping up on-screen. Tried entering safe mode and it did the same there.

Second PS4: The replacement I got was physically damaged. Had a large crack near the disc slot.

Third PS4: Have stress tested it for several hours with Killzone/Battlefield 4 mp/Blu-ray movies, and it appears to be in working order. No freezes and no physical damage. Also noticed that the 2nd PS4 was noticeably louder than the one I have now.

This screenshot from PS4.

Was this issue there from the get-go, or did it start happening recently?

This is the 4th time my ps4 has crashed due to losing a network connection. It happens when I'm watching Netflix. As soon as my Internet goes out the ps4 freezes. Can't do anything but a hard reset. I can see this little network loss icon popping up and freezes midway. Does this only happen with Netflix?

Does anyone else has an issue where sound just cut off. At first it only happened on Killzone MP, but lately it has started to happen also while playing Assassins Creed; the audio just goes totally silent for a while before returning.

That's because those people are lying as it's not dead silent and can get very hot as well when playing Killzone. It's maybe dead silent if you're just using the UI or watching Netflix but not when playing a game.

I'm seriously considering returning my ps4 now. It freezes too much. And it's usually the same things I do that causes this. One is Netflix. Pull your wireless router power cord and it crashes the ps4. Hard reset. A few times when I go to put it in standby it will freeze as the white loading circles spins. It also will do this when I turn it off. The hell is wrong? Is my system faulty or is this a software issue?
