Extremely LttP: The Halo series

So I've just played through all the Halo fps games for the first time over the course of the past 4 weeks. Never had an original Xbox and so I passed on the 360 sequels when I had that console.

Anyway, I recently got an Xbone and the Master Chief Collection was on sale for €8 or thereabouts so I thought I'd finally jump in and see what all the fuss was. When I was done with that I picked up Halo 5 and Reach for €15 total (a bargain, I think). It's been quite a trip these past few weeks with a lot of ups and downs along the way. I'm pretty much all Halo'd out at this stage having played nothing else in between, just jumping straight from Halo to Halo.

I played through them in this order btw; 1>2>3>4>ODST>5>Reach.

No real point to this thread, just needed to jot down my thoughts on the series from this unique perspective so here are my hot takes for each game as a complete noob to the series in 2017.

Halo CE: Anniversary

I was kinda mixed on this. I loved the first half of it. It had great enemy encounters and the Halo gunplay is as good as I've been led to believe. I was also blown away by the music. It wasn't at all what I was expecting, the drums especially.

However, it went downhill around episode 6 or 7. Most of the second half of the game has you repeating prior missions except this time in reverse. It reminded me of DMC4 which pulls a similar stunt. I'm not sure if they ran out of money or time or what but I didn't enjoy much of the second half of the game and I haven't even mentioned the infamous Library level yet. It was so fucking long and monotonous although I don't think it was even the worst level in the game, I enjoyed the one before it even less. There were numerous points throughout the campaign where I wasn't sure if I was in a new area or had somehow gone backwards and was in a previous room. There was so much copy and paste shit going on here. One thing I DID like about the back half of the game was the lead up to the introduction of the Flood. It was very well done. The incredible music helped of course. It might be sacrilege to say but the level design in this game is just not that good today, maybe it wasn't even that great at the time, I'm not sure.

Although SAYING THAT, there were a lot of old-skool aspects that I did really enjoy. The hand-animated cut-scene animation was goofy as fuck but I think it added to the charm. Doubly so the way Master Chief goes flying in his death animation when you get killed by an explosion. I also loved the way it didn't hold your hand. It would give you an objective and you are left to figure out where to go and how to do it. No waypoint on screen telling you where to go, no annoying Cortana screaming in your ear telling you to hurry up. You're just left to get on with it. I will admit it did sometimes take me FOREVER to find things but I prefer it this way than being led by the hand.

I have to say they did an amazing job on the remaster because holy shit the original graphics are so grey & dark & bland. It's night and day (sometimes literally) when quick-switching between them.

One other thing I wasn't expecting was the humour. There are some genuinely funny lines from the other background marines (a lot of them Aliens quotes and the Sarge is pretty much Apone, right?) and having the covenant speak English was a wonderful touch which led to some funny moments. The aforementioned goofy animations helped with this tone a lot. It kinda felt like a cartoon at times.

Fuck the final sequence, though. What better way to finish this seminal FPS than with a driving section in a terribly controlling vehicle through tiny tunnels where you're constantly getting caught on geometry at every turn and being flipped over by the slightest fucking bump on the floor. Just an awful way to end the game. Apparently people like this part! I don't get it, it was up there with the worst of the game for me.

Overally a mixed bag. The parts I loved I really loved and the parts I didn't I fucking despised.

Halo 2: Anniversary

I literally jumped straight into this after finishing Halo CE (there are no end credits for the individual games on the MCC, it's just level end, back to menu, start Halo 2). First thing I noticed upon starting the first mission of this (apart from the total nerfing of the shotgun, boo!) was that something just didn't feel right. It took me a few missions to put my finger on it but I eventually realized that it was the FOV. It's a lot narrower than Halo CE. Now, I don't know if it was like this in the original Halo 2 or something they fucked up in 2A but it was noticeable as hell here especially when jumping directly from game to game like I did. I got used to it over time, mind.

Am I right in remembering that this game got a bad rap at the time of release? Because I really liked it, even the Arbiter missions. They were a nice change up in both style and tone and I welcomed the invincibility power. And MY GOD some of the music on his missions was simply outstanding. Got some real 2001 A Space Odyssey vibes off some tracks. Martin O'Donnell can't get praised enough for his work here. Also, Michael Wincott has one of the truly great voices in cinema. I'm a big fan of his and never knew he was in this series. He has such a cool fucking voice.

The upgraded graphics here were even better than in 1. The new cut-scenes were almost life-like in how good they were (I had a weird bug where the subtitles were out of sync with the video, though) and the story eventually made sense. I say that because I was pretty baffled at the start. I felt like I had missed a whole game worth of stuff with the way it starts off with all these new characters and races. I was genuinely confused for a long time about what the hell was going on. The story in the first game was like a children's novel in comparison. Also, maybe this was just me but I felt the new graphics, as incredible as they are, were very dark in places and made it difficult to navigate certain areas.

One thing I didn't like about the game was how linear it felt compared to CE. Even though CE is pretty linear itself, it tricked you into thinking it was more open with large levels and a lot of sandbox style missions with vehicles. Everything in 2 kinda forced you down a set path with no great open areas.

Again with the shitty ending, though. I would have been pissed if I had played this at time of release with that dumb non-resolution that genuinely felt like the halfway point of the game. Thankfully I only had minutes to wait for Halo 3 and not years.

Halo 3

The downgrade in graphics after the 2 remastered games before it was the first thing that jumped out at me. Man, we're really come a long way from those early 360/PS3 days!

That aside, though, I absolutely adored this game. I can see why people praise it. It felt more like a sequel to Halo 1 than 2 thematically, with less emphasis on story & a lot fewer cut-scenes. Everything is really bright and colourful which was more how CE:A looked rather than the slightly gloomy look of 2. And the goofy cut-scenes are back! And the Aliens quotes from your fellow marines! I really can't get enough of them. I loved the overall camaraderie of the marines at your side, you're never alone in this game, it really felt like you were part of a war and not a one-man operation.

The controls of all the vehicles continues to get better, too. I like the new handbrake that the Warthog has (I had gotten used to the handling at this point) and taking down that Scarab on a Mongoose with your buddy on the back with an OP bazooka was probably the best moment of the series up until then. Then they go and top it with the dual Scarab battle later on! That part was epic. It goes without saying that the music was top-notch overall as well.

I still don't know why there isn't an option to have proper driving controls with the triggers, though. At the very least you should be able to look around without turning the vehicle at the same time, but oh well.

It was so satisfying to kill that fucking shithead 343 Guilty Spark. What a little turd it was right from the first moment you meet it in Halo 1. Can't believe it killed the Sarge!

The only real problem I had with this was that you never got to play as the Arbiter. The little bromance that he and Chief developed over the course of the game was great and it was as much his story as it was the Master Chief's in the end. Kinda felt cheated that he was relegated to a supporting role even though he accompanies you on every single mission if I recall correctly. Also, Michael Wincott's amazing vocal talent is fro some reason replaced with that of Terence Stamp :/ A great actor, don't get me wrong, but he's no Michael fucking Wincott! That kinda bummed me out.

Finally a Halo game with a really great ending! "Wake me when you need me". Beautiful. *sniff*

Halo 4

Erm, you should have stayed asleep, Chief! What a stinking pile of shit this game was. The one and only positive I can give it, and I'm gonna get it out the way early, is that the graphics are genuinely fantastic. It's hard to believe that Halo 3 & Halo 4 came out in the same system, the jump in graphical fidelity is that fucking huge.

And with that out of the way; Fuck this game! This is Call of Duty with a Halo skin on top. I think I hated every single moment of it. I was forcing myself to finish it come the end. You know you're in for a bad time when your Halo game opens with what is essentially a QTE climbing sequence ripped from Uncharted 2.. What the fuck is this shit doing in Halo? And then they decide to finish the game with an actual QTE as well. Bloody awful.

When did Cortana turn into such an annoying fuck? I had no issues with her in the previous 3 games but in this she never ever stops shouting at you. Constantly yelling orders, telling you what to do, where to go and prompting you to hurry up if you don't do it fast enough. And on top of that she yells the most banal, pointless dialogue at you. "Covenant!" Gee, thanks Cortana, I didn't see them there shooting me in the face. It's like the voice director told the actress to be as loud as possible & Never. Stop. Talking. Were you supposed to feel sad when she "died" at the end? Because I was absolutely delighted. I couldn't stand her by the end. And adding to Cortana holding my hand the entire game, there's a waypoint on screen at all times so you know where to go and what to do. God forbid I try to figure something out for myself. The level design in general was awful. So linear and restrictive.

There is zero humour or charm in the game, everything is super serious and dark & melodramatic. The OTT Chief flying death animation is gone, the covenant no longer speak English so no more funny lines of dialogue from them & your fellow marines (the few occasions when you're with them) spout generic grunt dialogue you're heard in every military shooter before. And the music, good lord. It's more background noise than music. I think there was one memorable track in the game that stood out and it was right at the end at some point in the final mission.

They reduced the ammo count on all weapons presumably to make you switch to the new weapons and not stick with the ol' favourites, but it goes way too far. It felt like I had to pick up a new gun off the floor every 30 seconds, they lasted no time at all. Didn't like the new enemies much, either. Almost all of them were bullet sponges, the knights in particular and the flying butterfly ones annoyed me to no end. They just weren't fun to fight. And is it just me or are enemies that teleport into the battlefield out of thin air just the laziest shit? The covenant at least come in on ships or have a reason to be there. Not a fan of the newly re-designed enemies, either

Even though I've finished the game I would be hard pressed to tell you what the story was actually about, it's told that badly. I know I joked earlier about feeling like I missed a game in between 1 & 2 but that eventually made sense. However, here I really do think I missed something. I think I saw the main bad guy 2 or 3 times max in the entire game and barely knew what he was about at the end. I don't even remember his name at the time of writing. Everything about the story on either side was a convoluted mess.

The one and only mission I actually enjoyed was the one were you are going through the desert valley on top of a humongous vehicle with the sniping part at the end.

What an awful game. I was so pissed off after playing this that I forego going straight into 5 (as I figured it would be more of the same) and went back to play ODST and finish the MCC instead.

Halo 3: ODST

Holy shit, it's the Firefly crew! (And Six from Battlestar Galactica). Amazing voice cast straight off the bat.

This was easily the shortest of all the games I've played so far. A lot of levels could actually be completed in mere minutes. The MCC shows the par times before a mission and some of them were 2 or 3 minutes. Some missions just required you to get from point A to B and you could run or drive there without even engaging in any combat.

I wasn't a fan of the "investigation" levels at all. So boring and sparse. Walking through the same empty streets again and again wasn't fun, especially at the movement speed this game has. The music was odd, too, there was a lot of sad jazzy piano going on in parts which I wasn't a big fan of. I realize it fit the tone of loneliness & isolation in the Rookie missions but I just didn't like it all that much.

The actual flashback missions were really good, though. After the shit that was Halo 4 it was refreshing to have old-school levels again and a lot of vehicle combat and great enemy encounters. I especially enjoyed the last 2 or 3 missions where it's Buck & Six escorting the Engineer Alien thingy and it really finished on a high with that Coastal Highway mission.

The story in this was very straightforward and simple which again was refreshing coming off the back of 4.

Halo 5: Guardians

First impressions of this weren't the best. That opening cut-scene was some ridiculous shit. Why bother with all these marines at all when Team Osiris can fuck up the entire covenant army at ease like this by themselves? It was so dumb. It brought back memories of The Twin Snakes that depicted a massively different Snake in the cut-scenes thank in-game. First thing I did upon starting the game proper was change the controls back to the Halo 4 config. Throwing grenades with the B button?! Aiming down the sights with the L trigger? ADS in MY Halo? Fuck off with that shit. Get back to the right stick click where you belong. I don't think I used the ADS for the entire game except when using sniper rifles and such, just like you do in the previous games. I'm glad they give you the option to bury the ADS at least, but it shouldn't be in there in the first place.

After that was done I could get on with hating this like I did 4. Except I kinda....really liked this. I can't quite explain it. It's something I never expected but 343 corrected a lot of the problems I had with 4. I presume they actually listened to the fans, did other people have the same complaints I did?

The covenant speak English again! This is huge for me and part of the reason why I enjoyed the series. And that also means that some of the humour is back. The enemies are also less bullet spongy. The Knights are more tolerable now and the flying cunts are put down in seconds. The combat and general enemy encounters were much improved over 4. Best of all, the waypoint is now hidden and only shows up when you hit d-pad down if you actually want it. Another case of them letting you hide something that I'd prefer wasn't there but at least it's not prominent any more.

The plot was OK. It actually made sense this time. I'm glad Cortana was absent for the majority of the game but I would have preferred if there were more Blue Team missions. Only 3 missions out of 15 as Master Chief is a bit of a joke. A half n' half mix like Halo 2 would have been better. Speaking of Halo 2, motherfucking ARBITER! I was delighted to see him back. I really enjoyed his little part of the story. Unfortunately again, you don't get to play as him which is a shame. While I enjoyed the return of Buck from ODST, the rest of Team Osiris were completely forgettable, the lead character in particular. What a boring, bland monotone-voiced lead. I don't even remember the squadmembers names except Buck. Chief's Blue Team members were even worse, though. Creating new characters is not 343's strongpoint, it seems.

As for the gameplay, well, it's not really the same Halo anymore but I did enjoy the new mobility and the speed you have. It played more like Titanfall with the way you can zip around.

The biggest problem with the game was the repeated fight with the Warden. I was so fucking sick of this cunt by the end. Were they taking the piss with this or what? I think I fought him 7 times. SEVEN! Same fucking boss every time. What the hell were thinking?

Halo Reach

This was something special. I'm glad I left it until last. The jump in graphics between Halo 3 & 4 made more sense after playing this as it sits nicely between the two from a graphical standpoint.

It took a while to get used to it at the start coming from 6 Halo's in a row that ran at 60fps to Reach's 30. The motion blur was kinda jarring. Why oh why didn't they give this a facelift while they were doing all the other games? I quickly got over it due to the game being so goddamn great, though.

It probably had the best missions in the series. These massive levels were very impressive and I loved the seamless transitions from point to point on the map in the dropship. Also loved the new space combat. That mission was epic, especially with the way it ended being thrown to safety to finish the fight. What a cool moment. There was also an open-world type mission which felt a lot like Crimson Skies on the original Xbox, one of my favourite games.

The squad members of Noble Team were all memorable and well-written. It was heartbreaking to see them get killed off one by one. That final mission (and epilogue), my god. Just stunning. What a way for Bungie to bow out of the series.

Come to think of it, a certain Star Wars movie ripped off a lot of story beats from this game, didn't it? A prequel story with a bunch of characters you've never heard of before in an established series, on a mission to deliver something that could change the war, sacrificing themselves one by one in a story that leads right up to the start of the original in the series. Hmm, that all seems mightily familiar!

To be honest, I can't find a single thing that truly bothered me. There were little things here and there that I wasn't too fond of (the covenant don't speak English etc) but overall there was nothing to truly complain about. An amazing game.

Anyway, in terms of ranking them I'd probably go:

1. Halo Reach
2. Halo 3
3. Halo 2
4. Halo 5
5. Halo CE
6. Halo 3: ODST
...
...
...
...
7. Halo 4

It was a fun month.

Great post. I love halo and have played through all of them mult times on legendary. Per your rankings, id have to agree. But it seems like you enjoyed them and that's great news!

Fuck the Flood. It was never a good idea
. Reach is still my favorite. Have yet to play 5. I can agree with that list, though I might move ODST up.

Nice write up. I still refuse to play Halo 5's SP only because I can't muster a f*ck to know where the plot has gone after the atrocity of 4's ending.

Halo:CE is still my #1

I'm having trouble comprehending "passed on the sequels when I had a 360". That's...damn hard to wrap my head around, even knowing you didn't play the original release.

Glad you've finally discovered the joys of the series though. I'm not an FPS guy, but I have few gaming memories greater than wasting countless evenings running Halo 3 with friends.

Good read. I'm mostly in agreement with all of your points. Although I really love CE, even though you're right about the back tracking and awful finale. There's just something about it. Halo 5 gets shit on a lot. It does deserve it somewhat but I think the game is an absolute joy to play overall. If the campaign in 6 is a winner we could possibly have the best Halo game to date.

I still need to play Reach.

My ranking (for the campaigns)

CE
3 = ODST
5
2
4

Great write up. It's one of my favorite, if not the favorite, series in all of gaming.

Halo 3 for me hasn't been topped although I did like Halo 4 a bit more than you did, lol. I agree about the QTE shit but I thought they did a good job with Cortana's character and her VA really stretched her range of emotions. It is one of the weaker Halo campaigns for sure though.

I never played Halo 4 or Halo 5 but I'm with you almost 100% on your impressions of all the other games in the series.

I personally feel like Halo 3 is a better game than Reach, but I can respect your opinion.

Also, you're dead on about Halo:CE: The reversed levels feel like they ran out of time during the development of the game and the Warthog obstacle course at the game's finale is just dumb, dumb, dumb. Still a good game, though. :)

Always nice to see Reach at #1. While I easily sunk way more time into Combat Evolved, due to not having an xbox and it being the only one my pc could run at the time, once I got a 360 and Reach came out, I got hooked on it harder than any fps (until titanfall eventually came out) I'd ever played. Great story. Interesting characters. Amazing multiplayer. It really felt like the height of the series... And then I played 4 and lost all interest in the series outside of multiplayer...

This is a fantastic post, it's fun to see how this series is for a new player today!! Great work in the post too, explaining each one! You got the best Reach experience on One too; it was patched and runs solid 30 now with v-sync, the old game didn't!!

Odd you liked Halo 5 that much. It's widely considered to have the worst campaign in all of Halo. It takes the nonsense of Halo 4 and turns it up to 11, and then combines it with terrible characters (outside of Buck), bad level design, and fighting the same fucking boss over and over. I don't have much against Reach. Most of its issues were in the multiplayer department, but even in that regard it was not as bad as Halo 4.

Overall, main trilogy is still the best, with each game better than the last. While ODST is a good spin-off that mixes things up.

OP, your opinion, well, it's okay. You tried.

Halo: Reach was the GOAT, especially the multiplayer. Swordbase matches were awesome.

You just liked everything bad about Reach in one post. Only thing you missed was saying you liked armor abilities and in particular your favorite one was armor lock.

I remember there being a patch before it let me play, was wondering what it did. How did it run before?

Glad to see so much love for Martin O'Donnell's amazing composition. The original Halo's theme might be the most iconic video game tune of the 2000s.

Ba ba baaaaaa...

3 is probably my favorite of the bunch. It's got my favorite level design and encounter design, even if the Brutes are a bit too easy.

The part at 9.40 in this track

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jhDOPuh5TI&t=9m40s

when that kicks in mid-game, that may be my musical highlight from the entire series. Just so fucking cool.

LOL I can totally understand your feelings on the games. And I'm glad you put reach's missions at the top. Respects. Halo 1 I feel like hasn't aged all that well and the Anniversary graphics while really nice, actually destroy the tone the original game. That level you hated before the library felt more like a mystery at first because you'd be going through hallways filled with blood but that blood was removed in Anniversary.

Your order would be fairly similar to mine and I laughed pretty hard at your halo 4 Summary.

Also +1 that Halo Reach needs a proper 60fps update with that motion blur removed

Only thing I don't agree with you on is ODST. I would argue it as one of the best Halo games. It was different but did everything right. If you didn't do it during the game, make sure you go and collect all the audio logs, or at least watch/ listen to them on YouTube. I think it brought ODST to another level.

It might be sacrilege to say but the level design in this game is just not that good today, maybe it wasn't even that great at the time, I'm not sure.
It's often attributed to "aging", but people complained about the same things back in 2001. Even I did. I think the level design improves with replays, though.

The interiors on AotCR are a good example. The first time you go through, everything just seems the same. But the actual room and encounter layouts are very different, and this starts to become more obvious as you become familiar with them. The elements that are the same in different rooms, become elements that can be mastered (i.e. jumps), making all the rooms super-fluid to play, without making them play the same.
When I first played CE, I considered the exteriors to be the stronger parts of AotCR. That opinion flipped over the years.

and I haven't even mentioned the infamous Library level yet. It was so fucking long and monotonous
I like the Library, but I do have to be in the right mood for it. The somber color scheme of yellows on dark blues, and the steady rhythm of Halo 1 shotgun dancing, can be mesmerizing.

I have to say they did an amazing job on the remaster because holy shit the original graphics are so grey & dark & bland. It's night and day (sometimes literally) when quick-switching between them.
It's hard to compare switching back and forth, because punchier art tends to "look better" side-by-side. Also, Anniversary's Classic Mode is a very poor representation of the original game; it's got numerous graphical flaws, and you can't use the original audio.
There's also the issue of display technology and settings; sixth-gen games often "look dull" today because they were intended to be played on screens with better static contrast than most modern flat panels. It's a very good thing that the modern HDR display stuff is promoting change in that direction...

Anniversary is pretty, but I strongly prefer the original art on the whole. It conveys a vastness, and a deep mysterious moodiness, that's amazing when it clicks. It's also cleaner and more intelligible for gameplay.

There's also a dynamic liveliness to the original visuals that doesn't come across in Anniversary. The blood splatters and the effect they have on the battlefield, for instance; a well-placed grenade in the original game could paint a room black and purple.

One other thing I wasn't expecting was the humour. There are some genuinely funny lines from the other background marines
What I like about the NPCs in Halo 1 is that - while they're cartoony - it feels like they're existing in-universe and taking their situation seriously.

I really don't like Halo 2 in this regard. The marines feel like people on your couch who don't care what's happening, the grunts feel like they're "trying to be funny", and the elites sound like bad hammy Shakespearean actors talking through their noses. The unnamed NPCs feel incredibly disconnected from everything that's going on. (By contrast, Halo 2's named characters are spot-on.)

It works once the warthog's handling "clicks." It's a weird physics model, with basically zero lateral traction. You have to embrace the fishtailing, and think of momentum as the primary control factor, rather than imagining the reticle as a linear guide for the vehicle.

was that something just didn't feel right.
Yes, it was like that in the original. On 4:3 displays, Halo 1's FoV is 70 degrees, Halo 2's is around 62.

But the really bizarre choice that Bungie made was that, when the oXbox was in 16:9 mode, Halo 2 split-screen would use a left-right split rather than top-bottom. And they coupled it with a FoV of around 44 degrees. It's absolutely horrifying.

These are all normalized to about the same FoV scale:

LhzZt9I.png

(Top to bottom: 4:3 single-player, 4:3 split-screen, 16:9 single-player, 16:9 split-screen)

Am I right in remembering that this game got a bad rap at the time of release?
Sort of. It was overall very well received, but there were a couple things that ticked a lot of people off, and many people coming from Halo 1 were unhappy with how basically all aspects of gameplay were redesigned from the ground up.

The new cut-scenes were almost life-like in how good they were
I actually really dislike the Blur cutscenes. Assets are largely well-made in and of themselves, and the rendering is excellent, but they don't bring everything together well. They're not artistically consistent with the game (either OG or Anniversary), and they have serious editing issues, particularly audio. There are various times when the rhythm of what's happening on-screen doesn't flow nicely with the music (the end cutscene of Metropolis is a huge offender compared with the original), and there are numerous spots where the dialogue simply isn't timed correctly from one line to the next, like a character will start saying a sentence before the last one had time to settle.

Also, the original version of Halo 2 didn't have load screens between gameplay and cutscenes, or even between levels.

It was so satisfying to kill that fucking shithead 343 Guilty Spark.
I've always felt that it was very anticlimactic, and that it's a really good thing that the sequence in the control room otherwise finishes strong. Having GS randomly grow a face laser in Halo 3 also immediately reminded me of R2D2 in the Star Wars prequels, which made the whole thing even less appealing.

Also, Michael Wincott's amazing vocal talent is fro some reason replaced with that of Terence Stamp :/ A great actor, don't get me wrong, but he's no Michael fucking Wincott! That kinda bummed me out.
Yeah, the VA change for Truth was extremely unfortunate.

But Truth went downhill in Halo 3 in general. While Halo 2 makes Truth out to be a character with interesting motives, I think Bungie was having a hard time deciding what a character who'd just tried to fire a Halo ring is actually up to. So we ultimately got "eh whatever he's kind of crazy."

Finally a Halo game with a really great ending! "Wake me when you need me". Beautiful. *sniff*
Part of what makes it work as well as it does is that it's an echo of Halo 1's ending.
The same motif is used at the end of both; Halo 1's carries some ominous tone as the camera tilts up to look at the galaxy before it fades to black, whereas Halo 3's is less dissonant and simply conveys finality as the camera watches the cryo tube.

(Unfortunately, the Anniversary version of Halo 1 really dropped the ball with the ending shot. The camera just tilts up into nothing while a different version of the music plays, and it doesn't have anywhere near the same tone and impact.)

The one and only positive I can give it, and I'm gonna get it out the way early, is that the graphics are genuinely fantastic. It's hard to believe that Halo 3 & Halo 4 came out in the same system, the jump in graphical fidelity is that fucking huge.
Halo 4 looks a lot more detailed and "polished", but the graphics are far from a strict improvement.

The really big hit is dynamic phenomena. Explosions don't convey much depth Halo 4, dynamic lights look dull because they have no specular reflections, and there are no dynamic spotlights (there's no flashlight, and vehicle headlights vary from "obviously incorrect" to "practically nonexistent").

Halo 3 has some subtle static lighting advantages as well. Glossy objects can be vibrant and complex, without experiencing the weird incorrect hazy rim-lighting that sometimes shows on objects in 4 and 5.

A lot of the things that Halo 4 does to boost its perceived detail are also detrimental to visual stability and to the sense of clarity. For instance, the dark lines sprawled across Halo 4's environments to show terrain contouring are smudgy, and you can see them fade away as you approach them.

But, my biggest issue with visuals in the newer Halo games is that the core art style is angry. It's not just the enemy design, it's as if every pebble and blade of grass is glaring at you all the time.

And is it just me or are enemies that teleport into the battlefield out of thin air just the laziest shit?
Teleportation is problematic because it's not a mechanism with useful prediction and feedback for the player, and because of the invincibility frames. From player perspective, it's annoying randomness.

Halo gameplay is also fundamentally about herding enemies and using and manipulating their positions; unpredictable teleportation is disruptive to this.

The one and only mission I actually enjoyed was the one were you are going through the desert valley on top of a humongous vehicle with the sniping part at the end.
I definitely wouldn't put that one at the bottom, but I was disappointed at the amount of wasted potential it had.

I couldn't believe it when they re-used Stacker's lines from The Ark in Halo 3, about clearing lines of wraiths. The original encounter is one of the iconic moments of Halo 3, but the reference to it in Halo 4 is literally just a big flat ramp with some wraiths at the end.

The motion blur was kinda jarring.
Yeah, it's my biggest beef with Reach's graphics. I actually think it's responsible for a lot of the complaints that get attributed to the temporal antialiasing; the low blend quality can make blur trails look almost like hard-edged transparent extrusions from objects, which in motion can look very similar to ghosting.

Come to think of it, a certain Star Wars movie ripped off a lot of story beats from this game, didn't it?
Not really, no. Bungie didn't come up with the "kill off the characters one by one" thing.

Glad you tried halo and I liked it OP. However I disagree immensely with your opinion that reach is the best. Reach was hyped as fuck, and didn't deliver.

There were many aspects that were wrong with it but I'll stick to my biggest gripe with it. The attack on Reach was something similar to the attack on Pearl Harbor, it was a swift, large scale, precise and brutal attack the covenant made on the UNSC. And most of the UNSC forces were overwhelmed and decimated. Yet Reach(The game) never conveys this, except for the very end. And for some long time fans that read the fall of Reach novel feel that Reach(the game) didn't truly convey what the battle for Reach was

I don't know about you OP but I never felt a large scale losing battle as the one presented on this trailers or the one depicted in the fall of Reach novel which was published in 2001

Good read, OP. Your impressions are pretty spot-on, though having played CE back in its day forces me to hold it in higher esteem. Agree with your points on H5 as well. Thought it was a substantial step up from 4 and showed that 343i took the criticisms from their previous effort to heart (and not just in SP either!)

I'm actually really looking forward to the next mainline Halo game. Hopefully they can keep refining their craft and produce some real quality content.

Lot of stuff.

That's a very detailed post, thanks. You seem to know quite a bit about graphics, far more than I can comprehend.

You mention the shotgun during the Library level of CE. That is one of the few things that got me though it, fucking loved the shotgun in that game. I hated how shit it's been in every Halo sense, by comparison.

I remember there being a patch before it let me play, was wondering what it did. How did it run before?

Late answer!

Reach ran really badly on a early backwards compatible version. Lots of visual bugs and really bad framerate hits. Luckily they fixed all of this and Reach in BC outperforms the game running on 360 now, fantastic stuff!

I enjoyed reading your thoughts. Welcome to the series. Oddly enough, I started with multiplayer first. Halo Reach, 4 and 5 are the most controversial games IMO. Reach had the slow gameplay with bad mechanics, 4 had the melodrama and too little ammo, and 5 had exposition dump the game with repetitive bosses.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Reach is the best campaign, but I really really enjoy 4. It's not just false memories, either, I've replayed it twice on MCC. I know I'm in the minority, but I love it.

Anybody thought about if Halo would work with an open world approach? You know the large open areas of Halo 1 that felt so cool! I would like to see them try this.

Now you also have to play the Halo Wars games! I liked the first a lot but the second game is a little meh to me.

I'm actually the other way around. Anyhow, they're both solid games in singleplayer playthroughs and have some fantastic CGI cinematics to help build a solid story.

Both Halo Wars can be played on the Xbox One too, the boosted resolution in HW1 looks fantastic on XB1.

Woo, more Reach love! It's definitely my favorite, both SP and MP wise I think. Really really wish they'd remaster it so I could taste that perfect multiplayer again.

Halo 5: Guardians

I don't even remember the squadmembers names except Buck. Chief's Blue Team members were even worse, though. Creating new characters is not 343's strongpoint, it seems....

An awesome post - really interesting read!

You may be interested to know that the members of Chief's team are actually life-long friends of his. They were all abducted as kids (around 8 years old), and trained together as part of a military experiment. E.g. All 4 of them get dropped into the woods and have to try and capture a (symbolic) flag from their marine trainer's camp.

They were sometimes co-erced into trying to give each other up...so they came up with a secret signal to show things were genuinely all clear and they weren't being tricked. It's the tune/call "olly olly oxen free" and that's the tune Cortana plays in Halo 5 at the terminals.

In Halo 1 they were all supposed lost/dead from the battle at Reach, and so Spartan 117 has quite a lot of pathos, that he has lost the only family he has ever known.

I can't for the life of me remember how/why they show up in 5, but there is actually quite a lot of fan service in them re-appearing. I totally agree though that their characters don't really come through, and you don't really get a sense of the life-long bond between them.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend reading all of the Halo books, but the sections that describe the back story of John, Spartan 117, really give context to the whole series...and have never been explained in the game format.

But why ODST after 4? Also ODST is an amazing thing. I love how different that game is from the others

ODST is a fascinating game. I love spin offs that give you a different perspective.
Masterchiefs story is a epic save the universe arc but ODST gave you a bit more grounded operation level perspective. It did so many things right. Especially the atmosphere.

I just wish it was harder. A LOT harder. Even on legendary i think H3 & ODST are the easiest. In ODST a hunter is "supposed" to be like a bossfight but drops really short in that regard.

I think this highlights the lack of pomp these characters deserved in their introduction in 5.

"So yeah, Chief is back with Blue team...." was effectively all it got.

Great post. Keeping the candle lit that, one day, the MCC comes to PC.

As it stands, I still place Halo CE PC online most nights of the week. It's timeless. Often goofy, kinda barebones, but unfettered by modern FPS algae like levelling and loot boxes. Just Red versus Blue on The Gulch, squabbling over each other's flags. That's top shelf.

This is why Halo: CE and ODST are the only good Halo games imo.

CE
3 = ODST
5
2
4

Agree on all this - even though I'd drpp Reach somewhere in the top 3.

Great post.

Is the co-op still shit with performance issues? Because during the Bungie days couch co-op was what brought the series from Heroic to Legendary for me. Some things I wish you could still somehow experience in all their glory.
-Couch co-op LASO runs.
-Forge World
-LAN parties
-Custom Game multiplayer

Oh and regular PvP too but meh, you can get a lot of FPS pvp fix in other games.

Also, the tech that translated covenant speech I believe was developed between CE and 2. Not sure why it was omitted in 4 but it is the reason it was absent in Reach.

Praise for Reach, excellent. Such a great selection of missions with memorable characters. I agree it needs a remaster.

Your thoughts on the remaster of Halo 1 are really interesting. As someone that absolutely HATES that remaster with a burning passion for what it did to the theme and art of the first game, it's nice to see how it might be nicer to see it in a brighter way like Halo 3. Halo Reach and Halo 2 were also darker in their art though and Halo 2 Anniversary was a much better remaster.

Also another thing about your playthrough of Halo 1, you mention how you loved the retro animations. Not sure if you're aware but the cutscene animations in Halo 1 Anniversary are actually NEW, if you watch the cutscenes in the old graphics you can see just how old they are. It also emphasised how horrible the remaster was when the cutscenes looked that bad. Nothing about it was faithful to the original, even to the point the original graphics are missing a ton of effects. The new UI looks garbage too.

I played all Halo games until 4 (yeah, I agree, it's crap) and I kinda thought they were ok games.

...then a friend of mine started organizing LAN parties at his house once a month and I have to say, Bungie knew how to make amazing multiplayer games, giving players tons of options to customize matches.

Now if only they could do the same with Destiny...

Let's cuddle under the starry expanse and talk about Halo CE.

The title screen of CE:A was the epitome of everything wrong with the refreshed art of that game. Overly-complex Halo detail (is meant to be simple, monolithic and imposing) and for some reason the space scape needs over-exaggerated purples and blues instead of the lonely darkness of the original.

The other thing that bothers me is that we never got Blur cut scenes for CE:A. That would have been great.

Great post, and while I kinda agree with you on H1 (the last few missions being repetitive), it's still my favorite out of the whole series. It had the wonder, the mystery, the music, the graphics, everything.

Also, as a side note, Bungie was really time bound during the development (no shit) of the first Halo as MS wanted the game for launch and this is why they've decided to basically reuse all their previous maps for the second half of the game.

Halo 2 comes in as second, but only because its MP. Damn, I remember my brother and I playing split-screen tdm online using xbconnect (we didn't have xblive back then here in Hungary so we had this neat little program that bypassed xblive and made xbox think it was playing a lan game)

Those were the golden ages of my gaming life.

Great post, I really enjoyed reading through it although I disagree with minor stuff of Halo 4. IMO they tried (and succeeded) to make Cortana as human as they possibly could which I hope pays off in 6 on an amazing campaign.

I love these threads that criticise Halo but don't read like "343i are just cluelezz am i rite".
