Lttp: Nier aka one of the best stories and soundtrack in any game I have ever played

I'm a huge fan of Platinum games and I was really looking forward to playing Nier Automata. However, I have this thing where I don't like playing story based sequels unless I've played the previous entry in the series. So despite being told Nier Automata works as a standalone title I ordered the original Nier online and after waiting a month for it to arrive I finally started the slog so I could play Automata without missing any of the references to the original.

I noticed this game didn't review very well so I went on with very few expectations. Alot of the criticisms aimed at Nier are valid. The graphics aren't great, the side quests are fetch questy/tedious and the combat is very simplistic. However in saying that, I finished this game yesterday and after having time to process everything I have to say Nier has ended up being one of my favourite games of all time.

One of the main reasons I am gushing over Nier so much is that the story is AMAZING. There are some games that stay with you forever because they're able to evoke such a powerful response and for me Nier would have to be one of them. It has probably one of the best uses of new game plus I have ever seen as well. The way the game reveals new information to you on subsequent playthroughs is genius. If you play this game you really owe it to yourself to play it again through the new game plus mode as it will change the way you view the story in ways you mightn't expect! This games story is depressing, profound and full of brilliant twists and turns. I remember when the MGS series would throw things at you which you would never expect like the "change the controller port" boss fight and my mind would be blown. Those who have finished the game with the true ending will know that Yoko Taro does something of that calibre and it's fantastic seeing a director take so many creative risks and liberties to wow his audience. I know I said the combat is simplistic but the gameplay isn't offensively bad by any means. It can actually be quite good. (especially the mainline quest). Some of the boss fights are really cool and the way the game constantly throws different genres at you is quite interesting. One second you could be playing an action rpg and the next second you're playing a text adventure, top down computer style rpg or shmup etc One dungeon in particular has a really fun and challenging set of puzzles. I have to applaud Taro for the creativity he shows here.

Another thing I really loved about this game was the OST. Be aware that a lot of this game involves visiting the same 6 or 7 areas multiple times over and over which can get really tedious. Strangely enough traversing through the eastern road or walking through Seafront was made much much easier through the amazing OST. It would have to be one of my favourite soundtracks in a long long time. I have to equate some of the tracks to being audio porn.

I have to say if you are on the fence on playing this or enjoy playing games that blow your mind you should play this game! Make sure you play it through on new game plus to get a full appreciation of it. I can't wait to play Nier Automata now.

On a side note it's quite easy to see this game wasn't given much of a budget. I find it offensive that Square Enix has brilliant writers who can create stuff like this but their mainline big budget FF entries are such a mess in terms of writing. Is Taro always this good or did he get lucky this time around? I'm really looking forward to seeing what else he can do.

Nier and Automata are definitely peak Taro.

Drakengard 3's writing is not bad by any means, but due to it being more of a comedy game with a focus on poopjokes it kinda falls flat oftentime, tho there are some great moments in it nonetheless.

Drakengard 1's writing isn't really great or memorable, but the game itself is still incredible in a depressing, unfun way.

I forgot to ask. Did they fix the fetch questy stuff in Automata? Are subquests less tedious now?

The actual design of the sidequests really didn't improve. Tho they offer more narrative importance than in Nier 1

You realise Nier is a sequel to Drakengard 3, right? See you in a few years. :p

Drakengard/NieR series are amazing. But like u said SE barley gives him the budget for his games. To me Drakengard 3 also was really good but Taro even less budget than original NieR. I would love to see Drakengard 3 get re-released for PS4, because it has great story and very solid gameplay but piss poor performance.

Not really.
Its suppose to be prequel to first Drakengard but I think the game eventually gores to it own time line

Nier 2 and Sonic Mania are gonna have a real battle for OST of the year.

I never played Nier 1, but maybe I should buy the soundtrack.

Man, I envy you guys. Was so hyped for Nier when it came out but never had a PS3, so I just shared my support through the music. Got a Ps4 so I was able to play Automata at least and support Yoko Taro.

Welcome to the dark side, I guess! We come together and become as gods.

One of us! Well technically. I wasn't able to play it (I just needed a damn 360...), so I looked up a playthrough, was very easy to see how much of a gem it was, no wonder it became a cult classic. So here I am, waiting on a remaster...

Nah, Automata's crushes it, though that's not to say that Mania's is bad of course.

I say they did, the biggest problem in some of original NieR Quests was the drop rates, it was way too low.

I remember when the game was revealed almost everyone hate it, i bought it and damn i loved the game, the characters, voice acting, story and OST are amazing the Ending B playthrough fucked me up, Automata is amazing but NieR is my favorite of both.

Edit: I did liked some sidequest (Lighthouse lady, the missing dog, devola and popola one)

I'm playing Nier right now and I must say that Automata's are much easier to accomplish, especially considering I just hit and read what you have to do to clear the pink blossom seeds quest.

Well.. if Xenoblade 2 makes it out this year, that could be a hell of a contender too.

Nier 1 was just a better experience for me than Automata. My dream would be a Nier 1 remake with the same plot, OST, etc. but with the silky-smooth Platinum combat and gameplay.

I honestly prefer NieR 1 soundtrack but you can't really go wrong between the two. They are both absolutely phenomenal so if you enjoyed NieR 2 OST, I doubt you dislike NieR 1 OST.

OP has more time in his personal life than I do. I simply could not stand to endure the mediocre gameplay even if everyone promise to me a splendid soundtrack and excellent story.

Was literally falling asleep when I finished the first Quest where I met some sort a talking book thingy.

I've yet to see the great story. The game is an endless series of padding and empty promises until the last hour in which you get a huge info dump. Route B is very well done ( as well as the endings) but the route to all the good stuff is very, very rough and not well paced.

It is not a bad game, it is rather painfully bland to play. Like I didn't feel anything while playing. To this day I'm not sure whether the story is worth the slog.

It's about the characters, not the lore.
