What can they even do with Grand Theft Auto now?

I feel like GTA 5 is the pinnacle of the genre. Loved the characters, loved how lively the city is. Missions were fun, heists were awesome. Some great set pieces, good music and a bunch of fun activities outside of missions to enjoy. The satire was off the walls, the stereotypes were hysterical. It was a fun and funny game that didnt take itself too seriously.

Say what you want about Micheal, Trevor and Franklin, but they had terrific chemistry and theres a character for all types of players. Variety of missions for each character, each one had personality.

But what now? Where do we go from here? Can they even push the envelope at this point?

Turn it into a micro-machines esque elimination racer

I expect the next GTA to be back in Vice City, but I'd love to see it expanded to Vice City + New Orleans or something similar. They'll probably just focus on Vice City, though, which has gone unexplored for 10+ years now. They're painted into a corner, though. It's tough to build into new cities because, really, Vice City, San Andreas, and Liberty City represent the essence of GTA games set in the US... Southern beach city, California, and north eastern metropolis. Chicago could be done as well, but Chicago (and Vice City to an extent) lacks a lot of the natural topography that makes San Andreas and even Liberty City work better. One thing I love about San Andreas is just the verticality of the world. It's something you can't do in as many locations that works very well in California.

I'd like to see them invest real time in developing a sound story for the next GTA game, as well. The stories from GTAIV and GTAV were both terrible, and the games were more "A sequence of things happening," than they were "telling a cohesive story." I thought they missed a big opportunity with the Trevor / Michael storyline to have one of them legitimately working against the other one for the federal government, and shield that truth from the player before it finally gets revealed to the player and the victim at the same time. I felt like it could have been done in clever ways and they just missed that opportunity, and then completely bungled the end of the game by introducing those two false choice endings (which were terrible and actually made the game worse).

And, also, like danowat mentioned with GTA Online generating so much revenue with relatively little developer effort, I'm worried about the future of single player, story-driven GTA.

Bigger, with more nonsense.

I also anticipate the next game (as well as RDR2) will implement online more meaningfully into the SP experience, as well as expand the GTO component by enhancing the heist component and imitate what others like Destiny are doing.

It's way too early to be thinking about the next GTA, man, let's try having this thread in 2020 maybe.

GTA 4 was already 10/10 and they still managed to go further.

I didn't like 4 at the time, the city was amazing at a glance but it just seemed so empty somehow whereas 5 felt alive.

5 also brought back the fun that I felt 4 lacked.

I loved 5 but I'm not sure what the next natural step is, maybe a move into another time period like with Vice City?

Aside from the new setting, there is probably going to be a lot more focus on the multiplayer. GTA Online was good, but had so many issues that it became impossible to play unless you had a group of friends. Plus they pretty much killed the modding community.

I would make a new setting, new story, possibly make it around the globe. After that its the story. Gameplay wise they did a lot of things really well in this one, though my only real bug bear is that the gun play feel awful, but then this has been a problem for a long time and I'm not sure how you'd resolve it.

So in short:

-Multiple locations around the globe.
-New Story/Characters
-Refined Online Experience.

Work in that hand to hand combat and improve it.

It really needs it.

This is the only thing holding GTA from greatness.

San Andreas, IV and V are all 10/10 for me, so they can keep doing the same thing

For a setting, they should go back to Miami or a new place or even California again. The only city that I don't want to see again is Liberty City, the "gray buidings without beach/mountains/fields" is kinda boring

Next year the same amount of time will have passed between GTA 5's release and the present day, as there was between GTA 4 and GTA 5's releases.

I know that doesn't mean it's coming next year, but it's crazy to think of.

I'd like to see the return of San Fiero (San Francisco) and Las Vegas, plus all the playground in between. North SF could have the forest and Vegas would have the desert, of course.

Bring back three payable characters.

1. Asian dude
2. Woman
3. ?

I'd like to be able to get some cool mechanics around running a mob. A casino heist. Buring people in the desert, a la casino, etc.

I'd be sold!

GTA Futuristic Sci-Fi, 200 years in the future

GTA Universe - Space with ships and lasers, other planets, No Man's GTA - (Real Aliens, not just the drug-induced ones) Think a cross between Firefly and Guardians of the Galaxy)

GTA Gothic Horror, Transylvania, Vampires

GTA Seafaring Pirate Adventure, Island Hopping, Pirate Ship battles, Rum - lots of Rum.

...there are plenty of things they can do with the Euphoria engine.

Red Dead Redemption is basically GTA in a Western atmosphere. Doesn't have to be a "GTA" game to be awesome like GTA.

Bring back the GTA IV driving physics.

Write an engaging story (V's was...something)

Get a little silly.

Leave the US for at least one entry in the modern series.

Make it so that trees actually uproot(at least a little, depending on the force involved) when you hit them. That was a major disappointment for me in 5, the tech should absolutely be there by now.

GTA 5 came out on September 17, 2013

Red Dead May 18, 2010

GTA 4 came out on April 29, 2008

GTA SA came out on October 26 2004.

Has been about 4-5 years between GTA titles. Next year is 5 years. About that time

Just keep improving it, I suppose. Same stuff but even more polished with a new city, new protagonists and more stuff to interact with.

I don't begrudge them for sticking to male protagonists so far because GTA has always been a series about masculinity, ESPECIALLY V. That said, adding a female protag to the next GTA's cast would be a fun thing to see. If they're going to stay in the U.S., I'd love to see them tackle Florida again, or Vegas.

I think Boston would be a fool's errand because of how small our city is, and Watch_Dogs made me not want to see Chicago in another open world game for some time, even if their showcase of it was not the most accurate.

I thought it would be cool if they made one of the next protagonists an actual government employee, to see the bureaucracy in a GTA game just a little more.

Last gen we had a Bully port, Midnight Club, LA Noire, Max Payne 3 and Table Tennis besides two GTAs and RDR

This gen we only gonna have a GTA port, RDR 2 and GTA VI (maybe crossgen). That's how R* works now

Set it in China or Russia. Their acerbic, cynical views of a society would work great in those settings imo and one of the 2-3 playable characters could be a foreigner, giving that outsider view of a society.

Lots of room then to play with triad/mafia, corruption, government, rich vs poor, etc.

You think they'd release GTA6 just a year after releasing RDR2? That's even assuming RDR2 makes it this year? Not gonna happen.

Jetpacks.
Multiple cities have liberty city, vice city etc in one game.

More to do in singleplayer and repeatable content like bank robberies, casino's etc.

Multiplayer well nothing really multiplayer is a blast already and perfect. Just more crazy stuff and missions i guess:p

In all honesty though, they have plenty of time to come up with stuff considering they probably have next-to-no pressure from Take-two after producing one of the best selling video games ever. I'd like to see them explore a different country, but I would be fine with them going to a new American city (Philadelphia would be cool).

Two character story.

Siblings, male and female.

One's a criminal and the other's a police officer.

Hilarity ensues.

Rockstar North love their Michael Mann movies, so why not do something like Heat?

It'd also give them the context to expand on GTA Online with a Cops 'n Crooks, APB done right, open world multiplayer.

a lot of things, the series is really huge so they can't really go wrong, they can take risks with the game, or they can do the exact same thing, or they can keep similar structure but improve on the gameplay
