Are they like characters who turn into weapons for you? And apparently you can bond with them by going on dates with them?

Does anyone know the mechanic? Is there like romance between the MC and the various blades?

After watching the video, it seems you cannot date your blades or form Persona-like bonds with your blades?

Similar to pervious Xenoblade Chronicles, it has system called "heart to heart" that let you get to know your party members better. I think in the second game you can do that both with party member and your blades.

Given the vast number of available Blades, this will be nothing at all like Persona. Things like friendship and romance will be more or less exclusive to main storyline characters. There may be the occasional piece of banter, but I wouldn't count on anything other than that. It's more like you've got various weapons you can equip and each one has a familiar attached to it with a personality. Alucard never dated his Living Sword... barring whatever the doujin community has entertained itself with.
