I'm glad to hear you had such an awesome time! There's definitely a learning curve as I'm sure you've noticed, but every game is a learning experience, which is part of what makes it so much fun.

In other news, I just broke down and made a pre-order for a set of Scum and Villainy ships...my wallet am cry.

So, back from my very first X-wing tournament, slightly tired but super happy with my performance, this is my build:

"Whisper" (32)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Rear Admiral Chiraneau (46)
Expose (4)
Ysanne Isard (4)
Rebel Captive (3)
Experimental Interface (3)

The first game was against one of my best mates, he was running this:

Keyan Farlander (29)
Push the Limit (3)
Sensor Jammer (4)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Lando Calrissian (3)
B-Wing/E2 (1)

Dash Rendar (36)
Predator (3)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Jan Ors (2)
Outrider (5)

Despite some terrible flying with my Decimator (I sorta sent him on a around the world trip while Whisper fought with Dash and Keyan pretty much solo for 4 turns or so). I managed to come out on top of this game, largely with some fairly defensive Phantom flying let me chip away at the Outrider without letting it or the B-wing take it out, when they finally did topple Whisper the Outrider was dead and Keyan was 3 shields down. By that point only a large astroid field separated him and my full health Decimator and although Keyan did do a worrying amount of damage to Chiraneau, he couldn't withstand the onslaught and died soon after.

2nd Game

Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Chardaan Refit (-2)

Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Chardaan Refit (-2)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

I was very worried by this list going into the game and I was right to be so. I haven't really tried my hand against the Rebel swarm with the Phantom and Decimator and didn't really know the best tactics going in. My initial gambit of closing the space between me and the A-wing as soon as possible left me dangerously close to the table edge and the shear firepower of the 3 B-wing tore my Decimator apart, he limped out of the first pass with only 3 health and only 1 A dead. Happily, my Phantom flying was on form and once I got behind the B-wings with Whisper she had very little trouble laying some serious pain onto them killing one and majorly damaging the final 3 ships, although unable to lay down the killing blows on any. The dogfighting between the Phantom and B/A went on for a few turns before my opponent wisely broke off and gunned down my limping Decimator a few minutes before time was called. A victory for him, although I was fairly happy with my flying at the end of the day and if the game had gone on for an extra 30 minutes I wonder if their may have been a different result.

And the final game of the day did I hear anyone say MIRROR MATCH?

Note, his hot repaint of the Phantom

"Whisper" (32)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Mara Jade (3)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Rear Admiral Chiraneau (46)
Expose (4)
Ysanne Isard (4)
Rebel Captive (3)
Experimental Interface (3)

The keened eyes among you may have noticed that this isn't quite a mirror match. His Whisper is home to Mara Jade, giving me the 1 point initiative which proved absolutely vital for this game. With my Decimator giving out stress and Whisper shooting first, my opponent found it very difficult to know who to focus on with his Phantom. He finally chose on shooting the Decimator, giving it a stress and forcing it to remain unclocked, making it easy prey for Chiraneau. Although it was somewhat a hollow victory since I couldn't shoot at his Decimator without having the same condition although his Evil Chiraneau wasted a few turns shooting at Whisper all while my Good Chiraneau chipped away at his health. Finally once my Phantom fell it became a total endurance race as the 2 Decimators slugged it out against one another. The combination of fairly lucky critical hits (my opponent got the crit that made him discard his eilte skill and destroy Chiraneaus power fairly early) and the earlier damage I was laying on him meant that I outlasted the fight and I toppled his Decimator.

The final results were 2 wins, putting me in 5th place of about 22-25 players (not sure of the exact amount). Overall, very happy how things went out and I got my hands on a sweet dice bag and alternate art card for Soontir Fel (which is oddly useful due to me owning Imperial Aces but not the Interceptor booster pack.) It was a great time and I would recommend going to a tournement if any of you see anything happening in your local area.

Played two rounds of two core packs with my friend, then we went out and bought $200 worth of extra ships. The TIE Defender seems amazing, and the B-Wing seems useless, but I realize that's an advanced layer of strategy that I'm not seeing yet. Haven't gotten to the other ships yet.

Man, what a fun game. I love it! The strategy and skill and sheer luck is just exhilarating. Thanks so much OP for the topic, I would have never gotten into this without it. Gonna buy a tackle box tomorrow to store all my stuff, and I'm oddly excited, hah.

My Decimator came in!

Definitely the coolest ship I've got so far, love its design.

Apparently, and also going by the post a bit up this page and boardgamegeek, a popular combo is Decimator and a Phantom.

Is that the only viable build? Or will any combo of ships work?

To be clear, I want to use my Decimator as a giant battering ram and a wall.

A lot of ships combo well with the Decimator. At the tournament I mentioned above about 60% of the players were Empire with most having the Decimator on the board. However, the ships that flew alongside the Decimator were very varied from Tie Defenders, the Firespray, Interceptors and a Shuttle and of course the one dude who brought the dreaded double Decimator list, thankfully I never fought him. I've had a fair amount of success with the Decimator/Firespray list in the past (Firespray is actually my favourite ship in the game, can't wait for Scum to give them the much needed and deserved upgrade).

If you are going hyper aggressive with the Decimator, make sure you practice with it a bit before taking it into a game that really matters to you. The dial on that thing is fairly poor which generally isn't a problem if you are going for turret damage but if you are focusing on raming and otherwise blocking with it then it can be outmaneuvered by most ships in the game.

It's actually the opposite ... the TIE Defender usually dies easier than it seems like it should, while the B-Wing is a badass knife fighter that's generally better than the X-Wing. Glad you enjoy the game though! As for tackle boxes, Walmart has nice ones for good prices, and I would recommend checking out the storage options at Jo-Ann Fabrics, especially because you can always find a 20% any one item coupon on their website.

I enjoy running three Academy Pilot TIE Fighters with my Decimator, although I like to run Kenkirk, not Oicunn. Might be easier to bump things if your other ships are doing ion/stress shenanigans.

I'm glad the thread has turned some people onto the game! And I know how you feel in regards to feeling oddly excited about storing your stuff - when I decided to start storing my ships I ended up taking it way further than I originally intended by modifying the Plano storage case in the OP. I'm very happy with what I ended up with, and it took some work on my part, but I ended up enjoying the process in the end.

As for Defenders and B-Wings, Defenders are great but are extremely expensive to use in a 100 point squad (I've seen some really great builds with them though), while B-Wings are probably the most versatile and robust Rebel starfighter in the game right now. System Upgrades (notably Advanced Sensors and Fire Control System) open up a whole new slew of options and combos with other upgrades, for example.

They can also be upgraded with a 1 point modification that opens up a Crew Slot upgrade, which is awesome for a relatively cheap starfighter.

This is an incredibly fun game. it can easily become tedious to a casual player when you start tricking out ships with crazy upgrade cards. Some people love that - like building decks in MTG. I've found that's what I dislike most about the game. I just want to dogfight like the movies!

The most fun I've had is scenarios we've made up using stock ships and one objective. Things like, protect the transport for 5 rounds against waves of 2 ties with reinforcements or board the shuttle with your hwk and fly it off the table without being destroyed. It's less about building the most ridiculous 200 pt b-wing and more about cinematic dogfighting (like the movies).

I would love to see a grand campaign. Fantasy flight could easily sell an iPad app which predefines conditions, limited ship resources and a strategic map where you pick battles and play them out on the table. Results could be logged and carried over to the larger campaign. You could win battles but still lose the 'war'. Come on FF, get on it...

I'm not hating on the people who play the 'point game'. I'm just point out that there's other ways to enjoy it.

Play the way you want to play. I've built all sorts of armies in Warhammer and Infinity that weren't as effective as they could have been simply because I chose to field units I like rather than units that would win me every game.

Take the same approach with X-Wing. As long as both players agree to use balanced but fun lists you can play whatever formation you want to.

Decimator, to go with your two TIE Fighters. It costs $40, though. A Firespray ($30) would work, too.

Otherwise, for Rebels, you won't have enough ships to fill out a 100-point squadron with just one extra ship (you only get one X-Wing in the Core Set and, after an upgrade or two, that's only going to be 30ish points). If you buy an X-Wing expansion ($15, comes with different X-Wing pilots than the ones in the Core Set) and a Millennium Falcon ($30), though, you'd have a very good, competitive, fun squadron.

Big box from B&N showed up. Unpacked it, showed it to the gf, said "uhhh wanna try it out?"

She said it looked cool but no. Fashion police was on.

So then I took out the dice, rolled 3 crits, and imagined all her shields were down. I was going to roll one more time, just to finish her off... But then realized I hadn't gotten the laser pointer thing yet and wasn't sure she was in the firing arc.

She's on notice though. Her and Kelly Osborne.

This would definitely be awesome to have. I did recently discover a way to play online but the US is extremely rough and the way the game plays out is not really automated or anything. After spectating a game, learning some of the many hotkeys, and going through a short guide, I think I've figured it out.

Both players are basically sharing a virtual board and you place virtual pieces and tokens on the board. It's a module that's run through a program called Vassal that apparently has been around for a while but I had never heard of it up until recently.

http://s93768914.onlinehome.us/xwing/

Has anyone else used this? After I get the hang of it I'd love to take advantage of the ability to play more often.

Not yet but have been meaning to when I have the time to try and get my head round it. One thing I mentioned about it earlier on, is that you get a lot of top players like Paul Heaver, playing. Another thing is you can download log files of games to see what people did and this is very helpful about picking up tips – particularly how people place asteroids to gain an advantage.

In one podcast I was listening to, Heaver was being interviewed and in tips he was asked for, he said looking at game log files is a really good way to help you get better. He also mentioned if you’re not sure why someone did something, then just ask the player – he certainly responds to any questions and as far as he knows, most others do. This, I think, reflects one of the great things about the game – how welcoming the community is.

After finding a shop where I can buy/play this, I'm STANDIIIIIING on the edge of getting a copy of the game, but I have two serious concerns.

One, I can't decide between Rebels and Empire (and I can't afford to go with both :P). I love the models of both sides, and for what I've seen of videos and the internet I like both playing styles.

Two, I also learned from those videos that I already hate fat 360º ships. I know the meta will always evolve to a greater or lesser degree and it also varies a lot depending where you live, but knowing those things are the current "bread and butter" isn't very appealing.

My friend found me an Imperial Aces set, so I've built two fleets in preparation:

1:
X-WING: · Luke Skywalker (28)
- Marksmanship (3)
· R2-F2 (3)
HWK-290: · Kyle Katarn (21)

- Intelligence Agent (1)
· Moldy Crow (3)
X-WING: · Biggs DarkLighter (25)
· R2-D2 (4)
- Shield Upgrade (4)

And 2:
TIE INTERCEPTOR: · Carnor Jax (26)
- Push The Limit (3)
- Targeting Computer (2)
- Royal Guard TIE (0)
- Shield Upgrade (4)
TIE INTERCEPTOR: · Kir Kanos (24)
- Shield Upgrade (4)
- Royal Guard TIE (0)
- Targeting Computer (2)
TIE FIGHTER: · Mauler Mithel (17)
- Push The Limit (3)
- Hull Upgrade (3)
TIE FIGHTER: Academy Pilot (12)

Can't wait!

Like you say, the game will consntantly evolve. A single strategy will not be forever dominant. Besides, unless you plan on spending quite a bit of money, you're not going to be playing competitively. Why worry over such things? Like I said, play what you like best, and play with people that share that philosophy. :)

Not for Rebels, though. I mean, you can use the alternate paint scheme, but you don't get extra Rebel pilot cards or bases with the Most Wanted Expansion unfortunately.

On the plus side, it does come with 1 extra set of Scum Y-Wing pilot cards and an extra base, so one of my Rebel Y-Wings can be re-purposed to Scum, but not the other way around.

Luckily, there are a few new upgrades coming in Scum and Villainy that are meant to shake up the 360 turret meta. For example, "Autothrusters" is a 2 point Modification upgrade that does the following:

When defending, if you are beyond Range 2 or outside the attacker's firing arc, you may change 1 of your blank results to an evade result. You can equip this card only if you have the Boost action icon.

Note: Firing arcs are still considered as the "slice" on the ship base, even if the ship itself has a 360 degree primary or secondary attack. This will likely (and hopefully) cause a resurgence of more builds featuring A-Wings and Interceptors as direct counters to turret spam.

I picked up a core set last week but haven't tried out the game yet, although I've watched several matches between friends. We've got a relationship with a distributor so we can get all ships for half off retail. My friend just bought two core sets and one pack of every ship released, even the gigantic ones, and he paid under 300 us dollars.

If anyone is interested in prices just private message me, maybe I can save you guys some money. I can get just about anything your local comic shop has except for tcg games like Magic.

My question is, is what my friend did overkill? It seems like most people on here only play with a couple ships. For someone like me who is just getting into this, what's a good starting Rebel squadron?

I would probably focus on the Xwing,Bwing and Falcon if you are trying to build a new Rebel army. All three ships are very competitive and are reasonably tanky to ensure that if you make any mistakes it won't cost you the game. If you are looking for early buys I would get the core set, X-wing expansion, B-wing expansion and then perhaps the Falcon or Rebel Aces if you are feeling wild. Other ships in the Rebel army are either fairly skill dependent or frankly just not that good (sorry A-wings, I want to love you I really do but you just don't pack the punches).

As for your friend, yes that is total overkill. Although I can respect his enthusiasm. Hopefully if he is ever playing Empire you can borrow some of his Rebels to diversify your forces.

Yeah I kind of thought it was overkill too but didn't know enough about the game to really comment. Thanks for the recommendations, going to put something together now and see what you guys think.

That looks fucking awesome but I don't have anyone to play with so here is hoping they turn it into a videogame.

Pro tips:

1) The tackle box in the OP works out great.

2) Don't drop your Advanced Tie Fighter onto a tile floor from 4 feet up :(

Well every expansion is useful, even for both factions, as there are often upgrade cards that can be used by lots of other ships besides the one the cards came with. So if you really like the game, you'll want at least one of every expansion. But at the beginning, having all of that probably is overwhelming. Nothing wrong with just starting off with a Core Set or two and couple expansions.

It looks pretty damn awesome for sure, but I'm way too deep into X-Wing to start picking up another game, plus starfighter dogfighting interests me more than capital ship battles.

Wait you can use Rebel ships in an Imperial squadron? Or do you mean you can use any faction in the new Scum and Villainy faction? Sorry the faction thing confuses me a bit.

Also, for anyone interested in Star Wars Armada or the new Star Wars board game Imperial Assault, let me know. I can get them for the below price:

Imperial Assault: $65
Star Wars Armada: $68

Again, if you want prices from my distributor which I can get for you, just PM me. I would be more than happy to try and help any of you save some money.

If this is against the rules or something, please let me know before banning. I'm not making any money or anything but I know GAF has lots of posting rules, etc.
