Microsoft and Samsung demos "Xbox display"

Looks interesting but it's difficult to see how this will work in practice.

Consoles struggle rendering the TV screen area at HD resolutions at 30/60hz.

Having to also cope with rendering the 'out of screen' area will require too much horsepower and extra RAM not to mention re-tooling existing engines for the new field of view.

It will make it impractical for all but the simplest games unless the 'out of screen' area is really low fidelity.

Like the 3D on the 3DS it seems like a gimmick that will get old quickly.

If it ends up being a compulsory feature of all titles it will be something else to inflate development budgets even closer to breaking point.

Oh my god, what the hell. I'm so sick of this proof of concept bs. This is amazing but is as fake as the initial kinect reveal.

Can't wait for this to happen

yes!! Hahahahaha.

Just thought of something, would be neat if instead of trying to guess where to stand or whatever with Kinect games, the picture extends and shows a pad like pattern on the floor. Something like those out pads for those sporting games on the NES

This will work really well for weather effects and certain things like explosions and stuff. It will add a ton of atmosphere imo. But as soon as they start adding geometry (buildings) and an actual extension of the game environment then I think it will become way to distracting and convoluted.

Looked immersive as hell, this thing will mess you up when you play it with Alan Wake or Resident Evil.

Exciting!!!

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Why has no one made a gif of the guy saying "Xbox Go Big", then the questionable physical activity he starts doing below the camera frame and the look on his face.

That's the first thing I noticed

But oculus requires you to use a big ass helmet to use, this requires you to wear no extra equipment, which also counts on immersion... I can see an approach like that being better suited to long uses than a VR helmet.
Pretty much this.

Plus, especially for periphery-only material which can indeed strengthen immersion, this is way better than a VR helmet. Though I've yet to try either so maybe not so, but I see more promise in this.

Well, it might be expensive but think of the money you can save on the TV !
You'd just buy a tiny ass 21" and play on the wall instead ! :p

Seriously though, it's an interesting tech and I'm sure it can quite enhance immersion.
Seems like the perfect thing to couple with kinect.
Until they can fill your living room with holograms, that is

I don't like the look of it at all, if you want a huge screen use a projector, most of the shit shown happening outside the screen is just a pointless distraction.

looks pretty awesome, and certainly great for adding immersion to games. i especially dug the part early on with the flames projecting off screen and the lighting being visible on the walls after he walked past them in game.

will get if remotely affordable - not for my living room, but man cave :)

Looks neat, not something I would want on all the time though, would look a bit silly in my "games room" and ugly in the living room where the TV is kind of stuff in next to a fireplace.

So from the scanning this is done with some sort of projector from behind as it didn't seem to scan behind the TV? I can't imagine this would be cheap, having a big TV and some sort of projecting device that can scan the room, I imagine some Kinect hybrid thing?

Seems really cool, but distracting as all hell.

Will the main image be on the TV screen still? What's the point of lighting up the room if I'm still only going to stare at the screen?

I want to see a live demo! Looks really cool

Wouldn't the same immersive effect be accomplished far more successfully with something like the Oculus Rift which, you know, won't show my carpet and wallpaper texture through the image?

Typical Microsoft: copy someone else, but do it in a different and far more convoluted way so it looks like they've innovated. This is Kinect all over again...

It's a very different approach.
And also a very different concept.

I dont really need thge whole room lighting up when I'm playing at night. When I play at night, I'm usually trying to hide that fact to keep from waking other people up.

Looks great, but I have some questions to consider if this can go mainstream.

Regarding of "room captured by Kinect", is it going to be a 2nd Kinect attached to the projector(this would be expensive)? How much a low end projector does cost?

Because obviously the one under the TV won't be able to capture the furniture that appears in the video due to its angle of view. Or maybe Kinect will only be used to turn it with a normal voice command on and to doublecheck if you turned off the lights?

And what angle, height and distance needs a projector? Because I don't see people installing a projector in their ceiling just to use this (which I'd bet it's the best option if you don't have furnitures in the wall behind the sofa).

btw, it's a slightly different effect, but similar and also cool : http://www.gizmag.com/sony-holodeck-playstation-move-eyetoy/20721/

Speaking of night time playing, I wonder if the projector would be powerful or not. Daytime playing might not be optimal with this. Although I guess it's more tolerant to wash-out to a certain extent since it's meant to be a peripheral effect.

I used to play on a projector a few years ago, but switched back to a TV. It was just getting a bit too inconvenient blacking out the room to play during the day.

I think if/when commercialised, it'll have kinect hardware built-in.

I wonder if it could gracefully/transparently improve kinect tracking when present as a side bonus, presenting a view from behind. Presumably this will be an optional accessory so a Kinect game could never depend on it, but could just ping it for added confidence perhaps.

You can say that again.

Yes that sounds possibe as there must be a decent camera in there.

Just get some blackout curtains. I bought some at Walmart for $20 total (2 packs to cover the window), and it darkens my room to near night time levels. Works perfectly with my projector.

Yeah, I know. I did this for a while for projector gaming. But I soon started missing the simple convenience of TV. Fumbling around in the dark, the vaguest ambient light bleed starts to become annoying etc. Just missing daylight during the day! It was hassle for just quick play.

But like I say, this would probably be more tolerant to a level of wash-out because your primary focus is going to be off your TV and unaffected by that wash-out. But the peripheral effects will be optimal in pitch dark.

Very gimmicky. Don't want.

When it becomes more like that hologram scene where they're watching Weyland speaking to the crew in Prometheus, then we can talk.
