Recommendations for usb hdds on a budget

I'm looking to get something cheap for now as I'm not planning to get something for use on a game system for now with hdd being fairly common for a long time now I figure three has to be a way to get something decent and with in a decent price.

I was considering looking at eBay but it could end up bad there. Ovcisoly I don't want to lose data so are there any old or new drives you can recommend? Would rather stay near fifty dollars or lower if possible.

Will be using it on an old computer and to save and backup files.

Would be nice if it's smaller and convenient as I may use it in a laptop often. I think 1tb is good but 2TB may be better as I have large files with music and such.

Also I'm in Canada (Toronto) so that will play a factor in shipping, not sure what that is as I have never shipped here.

I briefly looked on amazon and everything seemed over priced imo. Remember them being much cheaper six years ago.

Whatever you buy, pick up two and mirror the data if it's at all important. I usually get drives (Seagate or Western Digital generally) on sale once they hit $30/TB or less (not factoring that I'll be buying two drives).

There is a best buy here but feel they would not be very cheap at all. I figure ebay may come off cheap or perhaps Craigslist could be possible as long as it isn't some busted drive..

The absolutely cheapest way would be to use the hdd of a old laptop and put it in a external chassit which usually costs less than $10 from ebay. I have no idea how electronics get recycled in Toronto, but if you have a recycling station or a junkyard somewhere nearby getting your hands on a laptop for free should not be that hard. Sure, it may not have a great longevity and using two external hdds is a great idea if you can, but for the price it is pretty great.

Doesn't sound too bad but may be a bit hard getting around to places that have it.

I never used one of these holders but can look into it.

I have an hdd from my other pc and need to access it.

Would this allow me to do that without having to connect it inside my laptop.

I frequently buy mine from Newegg and I really love how portable they are. Very slim and lightweight if you're looking for 1-2 TB.

Will give Newegg a look this evening as well. I guess any hdd you buy has a chance of breaking down anyways.

Had a laptop die and ps3 hdd die. May have to get two like suggested.

Consider microcenter.com as well. I don't believe they ship to Toronto, but if you need an intermediary, I'll be glad to help. Just pm me.

With a $50 CAD budget, it'll be tough to find a new external 1 TB drive near that price range, even when on sale. Most of the massive discounts are for 4+ TB drives. You'd have more options if you can increase the budget up to $100 CAD, where 2-3 TB drives frequently go on sale.

This week, the Seagate Backup Plus 3TB is $100 at Amazon and BB.

The more portable Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB, which is popular on the gaming side, frequently drops down to $90 (but not this week):

If you can wait a bit, then periodically check sites like PCPartPicker for any deals (click on the brand name on the far left 'external storage' column to see which retailer is offering the lowest price):

Yeah, I may have to wait and as some were pointing to used and old may be the best option. I can't understand why HDD pricing has gone up over the years, you'd think storage solution (that is still the same size) would have dramatically droopped. I get that it's better tech and isn't exactly the same but why is no one dropping a decent product for a budget price..
