PlayStation VR Thread 2: Reloaded

I expected they might, especially considering a lot of the news outlets were correctly reporting that it was the new model / revision of headset. A $100 discount on a product that was literally 2 days old at the time was pretty insane. I nabbed mine immediately when they went on sale and I'm glad I did.

It's definitely possible that some retailer will mark it down again before Christmas, but I wouldn't hold my breath on Sony doing it officially again before year's end. Keep an eye on sites like Newegg and Best Buy if you're in the US as they'll be the likely culprits. Best Buy also has promos like "Buy a $100 gift card, get $15 free" sometimes and those sorts of things that you could use to maximize a discount on a purchase this large.

Yeah thanks, the best 'deal' I see right now is Dell currently has it priced at $399 but that's OOS as well. Interestingly I note that amazon is still selling the GT Sport bundle for $299 but I'm not interested in that( older model, not interested in the game, no move controllers included etc).

Damn, I think this is the first Doom VR impression I've heard in here! Very excited to pick this up. Side note, I've never played any version of Doom before.. and I'm 42!

I've never played any DOOM games before either. I might check this out.

Man, the Hulu VR app is so frustrating. It only works if you have a DS4, and does not work with my Sony remote or move controllers. I can’t even use my vita to navigate the shitty menus. It’s frustrating, because I really like the app and how shows look in VR. I guess I need to find my controller

I just played some Doom. I've only tried the Aim controller so far. If you have your VR legs, turn on the left stick movement, maybe bump up the horizontal sensitivity, and put that smoothing option on 0%. The turn smoothing option just feels like it adds input delay to me and makes the turning slower than I want it to be in the frantic action. I also disabled the aim assist because it was actually making my aim worse.

This game is FUN and really fast-paced. With the Aim and these settings, it feels like playing the regular Doom game in VR.

There are some downsides, but so far they've been minor. The left stick movement was obviously added late into development. You will notice that your gun is kinda floating along with you as you move around because the game wasn't really built with this smooth movement in mind. It bothered me for all of 2 minutes.

Charging up a pistol shot and then pulling the gun sights up and lining up a perfect headshot is so damn satisfying.

Finally checked out Demo Disk 2 last night. I went from being uninterested in Moss to Day One. Also Star Child, though less captivating, equally interesting and I want more damn it! I love watching these little toy worlds unfold around you. I feel like gaming has needed to break out of the flat screen like this for such a long time.
I remember reading about Dino Frontier in this thread ages ago and it didn't sound like much. I opened the demo and easily blasted through the 15 minutes like it was nothing - that game is just precious! I love the character, the little touches, everything about it was so compelling. I bought it immediately after, can't wait to play it some more.
I'm very pleased with how PSVR is shaping up. Even in consideration of the platform's drawbacks, the games still feel so fresh and enthralling in a way I've not appreciated in years. I have had my device for just shy of one year - 2018 is going to be pretty special!

So I finally had my first VR experience ever, and guys... GUYS! I was completely blown away, and that was just from the VR Worlds menu hub! I could actually hit the bubble/ball/rock that was in front of me! I did not realize how something that simple could feel so real and satisfying. Needless to say I had a HUGE grin on my face - I felt like a little kid again. :)

Ocean Descent was the first experience I tried and what an amazing ride. I couldn't help myself, so I tried reaching out with my hand to touch the shark when it swam by - I just had to imagine what it would be like to do that irl and this was as close as I could get to that experience. Mindblowing experience! 3D sound is super cool too.

Next up was Scavengers Odyssey - cool experience sitting in my couch and looking down at "my" body and hands controlling the robospider. Neat little idea with pretty bland combat. Although there is a lot of walking and jumping I had no symptoms of sickness, so that's comforting so far.

Last I had three matches in Danger Ball which was pretty damn fun. Very weird and unique using your head as a racket but felt pretty intuitive still.

I'm so exhausted now so I have to get some sleep. Tomorrow the adventures will continue - I didn't even get to try a game with the Move controllers. I can't fucking wait to jump back in. I have Batman, Resi7, Until Dawn and Skyrim waiting for me as well. Can't remember the last time I felt this giddy about gaming. I'm rambling now, goodnight guys! ;)

hahaha yep, that's how I remember feeling at the launch

And you have an insane library ahead of you that we didn't have then. You're in for some good times. It was hard for me to go back to "flat" gaming for a while.

this recent VR resurgence is really compelling!

I've tried many of these headsets, from the old oculus rift development kits to the samsung gear VR and even the google cardboard and the PSVR, it's all amazing IMO!

in 2018 things will keep up with the oculus go launching at ~$200 supposedly, no PC or anything else required. I think things will potentially really takeoff at that price point.

but who knows about the future, it''s nothing if not exciting though xD

Well, I tried Doom with the Moves. I just don't know what they were thinking...

The tracking is fantastic and it's so great to have full control of both hands (compared to the Aim, where one arm is sticking out of your head and aimed with your head).

But I do not understand why there is no turning. The left Move controller face buttons allow you to pulse forward, backward, and to each side. IMO it feels like an unnecessary moveset. Pulsing backwards is useful since you don't want to have to always point behind you and hit the teleport button. But not being able to turn at all is so incredibly restrictive.

I think it would have been better to just have two of the face buttons allow you to turn to the sides and then the others could be pulsing backward and forward.

I've basically been trying to get my brain to to never let my body turn aorund. Because as soon as I do, PS4 loses the move and I can't shoot.

It's an adjustment period for sure. It's very hard for my brain to not want to just turn around.

I feel like the biggest problem is that these are controls that are obviously straight from the Vive version. With the Vive, it makes sense to be able to just stand and rotate your entire body around however you need to in the moment because it is always tracking you.

But just like you pointed out, you can't really do that with PSVR because it loses tracking. There's a 180 flip button, but trying to flip around and shoot to the sides and never being able to change your angle is unbelievably awkward. It's obviously not made with PSVR's limited tracking ability in mind.

I'm glad the Aim works really well. I'll get around to trying the DS4 at some point, but I really like the Aim so I might beat it with that first. I'm kinda shocked that the last minute "left stick movement" option that barely made it into the game seems to be the only playable way to go. I've been watching a VR streamer on Twitch who is even raging at the Vive version's terrible controls.

Ontrac even later than usual today.

Still 2gb of patching left to go.

At least my aim will be charged.

Bummer about the the controls though. Why weren't they in touch with the Skyrim team?

Seems like those controls would have been ported over pretty easily.

Maybe they'll patch them in later.

So, played the tutorial, the first short level, got to a point where I went down to like the third mancubus in a fight that is really familiar from Doom 2016.

Note: I have the 1.01 patch installed. I did play out of rest mode, instead of from a cold boot.

Tracking: less than perfect. The aim needed occasional rotations to get back in place. This may be fixed from a cold boot, but I didn't have time tonight. The HMD tracking was fine.

Movement: I was actually fine with it. Rotation was on the right stick. Aiming with the aim. Grenades with your head. With all the sensitivity cranked, snap turns off, it played more or less like Doom 2016.

I like it. There's texture pop in, and slow LOD pop in, but the game looks good, runs pretty smooth. Would buy again.

If it's only 2 hours, my enthusiasm will be slightly dampened.

In the select menu blow the little comets(scavengers odyssey) or blow inside the water ball.

Played a bit of Dirt Rally in VR earlier, absolutely brilliant. Imagine it's incredible with a steering wheel as well. So good that the whole game is in VR.

Anybody heard any more about the Stranger Things Experience? I thought release was imminent, but it's gone quiet now.

Saw some VR porn for the first time.

I could see the scars on her leg. I could see like... the light reflect off of her nails. I know it sounds weird to point these things out but maaan... I've never experienced video where it looked like the person was right in your face before. It was crazy immersive... and hot.

No problem. Showed it to my dad (he’s an avid gamer like me) today and he was blown away as well. Also, Batman VR... absolutely amazing. I’ve realized how hard it is to explain what VR actually feels like to someone who hasn’t tried it. It really is something else.

Torn between making my next purchase Skyrim, Doom, or the Inpatient. All seem equally interesting. I've never played skyrim but I enjoyed my time with Oblivion. And I'm a big fan of doom and until dawn. However I already have plenty of shooters including farpoint and no horror games. Hmmmm...

I'd probably go with Skyrim first, so far from what I'm hearing about doom it's so-so.

Inpatient is on my list, until a few positive mentions about Doom show up it's been moved down on my list.

Curious about how many of the latest crop of folks swept up by VR were staunch "it's a lame gimmick" types before. It truly is something you have to experience first hand before passing judgement. Welcome aboard, fellas (and gals). :)

I picked up Doom today and have been playing it with the Aim controller for awhile. Really enjoying it, though it does have some warts. I am super not used to playing this kind of game so maybe it is on me somewhat, but it certainly feels like they rushed it in some regards. I noticed I kept getting stuck in some area where it prompts you to "select a holographic archive" but even with all my controller futzing, couldn't get that to happen or get unstuck. I'm in like the second level right now and can't seem to find a way out of the room I got into after I fixed a teleporter and killed some monsters. I probably just need to do some more exploring..

Blasting and moving with the Aim feels good, it's definitely a lot rougher an experience than Farpoint but on the other hand it's cool exploring a space lab with lumbering zombified monsters. The PSVR overall is doing a good job of maintaining tracking even when I've totally rotated my body around, it's not perfect but it's enough that I don't realize it and the controls aren't seeming to be off because of it. As for the "one hand stuck on your head" issue people mentioned, as I'm just using that hand to toss grenades, it does have a bit of a disconnect but nothing that feels terrible (yet).

One thing I will complain about, I am very tired of the earphones in the model of the HMD that I have, one of them is constantly getting pulled out. I like to keep the cable behind my head and that doesn't seem to work very well with this issue, I wish I had the newer model with the better headphones! This is all small potatoes however. The feeling of immersion is incredible, I can't wait to see when other developers build further on this with experiences built from the ground-up for VR as opposed to porting..

I tried Rigs last night. Figured I would pay a match then delete it however I ended up paying for nearly 3 hours straight.

So good. I'm very disappointed that the Mp is completely dead though. Especially with it being on plus recently.

I do have a bit of a hard time with the headset tho. Eventually the lenses start trying to push up against my eyes even when I try to adjust it. And I can never really keep the thing on easily. It keeps sliding off because of my hair I guess. TIME TO SHAVE MY HEAD

Do you not use the fine adjustment thing at the back? That should hold it on pretty tight. Try putting the band at the back higher up also.

At launch, when you could find people online, it was the best MP I had played in years. It's such a shame that it died so quickly, but it seems like no VR games are capable of keeping up an online presence.

I think it got worse for Rigs after they killed the developer.

We need to get some GAFs rigs going then!

Good idea, as a matter of fact maybe even have a PSVR online group in general.

I have the game, Battlezone, and EVE and thought about buying Star Trek...but didn't cause I don't really do online. You guys seem like an ok bunch to play with perhaps, so I'd consider re-uping my PS Plus sub.

Maybe even play some other games too.

I was always curious about it though it took the discount and Skyrim to push me over the edge. I was never a nay-sayer as I’m the type that wants to personally try games and technologies before I pass judgement and discuss them. I think most people who bought in during the promotion were probably interested before. Even with the $100 discount, I doubt the people you are referring to would take the plunge. It’s still expensive for something you won’t use all the time. When it went on sale, I read people say that it must be dying, Sony is clearing stock, new model around the corner, etc. Most of the naysayers won’t buy in at any price because they feel the headset is isolating, looks goofy, tech isn’t there yet, etc. I like my PSVR but I think VR is going to be niche for quite a few more years. If they get the full bundle down to $99 some of those people might might give it a shot, but I don’t think that’s happening.
