24"x18" 9-color screenprint. Hand-numbered edition of 50. Cost is still TBD but estimated to be $40~$45.

How to buy online: Send me a PM and let me know you'd like a copy. Include in the PM your PayPal address.

FAQ:

Q: What do you mean the price will drop evenly for everyone after x amount of orders for Majo no Takkyūbin?
A: After a certain number of orders are made any more money collected would turn into profit -- which the artist has declined for this release. If the artist won't take it, I wouldn't feel right accepting the extra money either so instead of that, once I hit the break-even point, instead of profiting, the cost will just lower for everyone. This won't apply to Paprika, however.

Q: Until when will I have a chance to make a request to order?
A: Until December 31, 2013 at 11:59 PM PST.

Q: When will payment be collected?
A: Invoices will start to go out on January 2, 2013.

Q: Can I request numbers?
A: Number requests will only be granted if you wish for them to match with your Game & Print Club numbers. I will automatically try to match numbers if you go for both Majo no Takkyūbin and Paprika.

Q: When will they be printed and shipped?
A: Both versions of Majo no Takkyūbin will be printed and subsequently shipped in mid-late January. Printing for Paprika is still TBD, but will be much later than Majo no Takkyūbin.

Q: Can I combine shipping?
A: Sure, but keep in mind Majo no Takkyūbin will be printed and on-hand much earlier than Paprika. Possibly 2-3 months.

Q: How much is shipping?
A: Haven't calculated, but most likely I'll charge a flat $15 for domestic. International varies depending on your location.

Pretty cool, right? But why the premium you ask? Because of these four primary reasons:

---The printings are very limited. They can be anywhere from 25 - 500, and 500 would be for the popular artists, such as Tyler Stout, who did the first two pictures above. There are no second printings, except in very rare cases --- though in those cases the integrity of the artist is called into question. As of June 18, 2012, this thread will no longer promote artists that chooses to do second, third, etc. editions without fully disclosing their intentions to do reprints of an edition beforehand.

13. What does “ limited edition” mean?

This means that only a certain amount will be printed of any given edition, as indicated by the number on the print itself. The edition size indicates the maximum number that will be reproduced. In addition to the edition limit, Artists Proofs (APs), Printers Proofs (PPs) and Hors d’Commerce (HC) proofs will also be printed, which stand above and beyond the limited edition size.

The amount of APs, PPs, and HC Proofs printed varies by the artists and manufacturers, but usually Artist Proofs are limited to 10% of the regular edition run, Printer's Proof are limited to one per printer, and HC could be only 1 (these are hardly ever seen in the after market).

--- The quality of the printing and paper are better than that of your average movie poster one-sheets/lithographs. These are mostly screen prints, with some giclees for non-mondo releases from time to time.

Useful definitions faq taken from here: http://www.disneyartonmain.com/pages/about-us/frequently-asked-questions.html

Disneyartonmain.com said:
4. What is a serigraph?

A serigraph can most easily be defined as a silk-screen or screen-print, albeit a very sophisticated and labor intensive one. Using the original artwork as the master guide, each color is carefully hand separated into individual elements and burned onto separate screens. The serigraph is then created by screening each color, one by one, onto the substrate (i.e. paper, canvas, etc.) thereby layering all the colors into their proper locations, pass by pass, through a process of physically pushing the ink through the openings in each of the color screens, ultimately combining to build the final image.

It is a painstaking, labor intensive and very precise technique, both in the color separating process and in the ability to keep all the screens in proper “registration” with one another throughout the lengthy process of laying down so many individual colors during multiple screen passes.

Considered a “traditional” printmaking technique because it is an analog process, serigraphy does not traditionally employ the use of a computer, but rather the careful artistic eye and technique of a master printer and color separator.

All Disney Fine Art serigraphs (and all other print mediums that we publish, for that matter) are created under the watchful eye of one of the art industry’s leading print experts, Tim Dickson, who for over 25 years has perfected the craft of fine art print making. His expertise is highly sought after and he is trusted by some of the world’s leading artists who want their work reproduced at a level that is nothing short of perfection.

2. What is a giclée?

Giclée printing (pronounced Jee-clay) is commonly considered to be the highest quality digital reproduction technique for fine art. It starts with an extremely high resolution, detailed scanning process during which the image and topography of the original artwork are captured into a digital file. Then the giclée prints are created using specialized printers that literally spray the image onto a substrate such as canvas, paper, etc. However, not all giclées in the world are created equal… (see #3)

5. What is a lithograph?

A lithograph is a printing method which dates back more that 200 years. It began with “stone lithography,” a process by which an artist’s work was rendered onto a stone and with the use of various solutions that either attract or repel ink, the stone essentially became a stamp which could be pressed or rolled onto paper to transfer the image.

The modern version of this technique is a process called “offset lithography”. Before a lithograph can be produced, the image is separated into four colors: Cyan (Blue), Magenta (Red), Yellow and Black (i.e. CMYK). Since most colors in the spectrum originate from these colors, when they are combined to varying degrees, they can reproduce most color that may be found in the original work. For this reason, this process is also commonly referred to as “Four Color Process” printing.

Offset lithography operates on a very simple principle: ink (which is oil based) and water don’t mix. First, each of the four separated colors are transferred to their own individual aluminum plate. During the printing process, each plate is dampened first by water, then ink. The ink adheres to the image area, the water to the non-image area. The image on the aluminum plate is then transferred like a stamp onto a rubber blanket creating a negative image, then the rubber blanket is rolled across the paper to create the final positive impression of that color onto the lithograph. When all four colors are layered onto the same paper sheet (and in proper registration) they combine to create the final image.

Screen print youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wogKeYH2wEE

--- The artists need to be paid for they are commissioned to do these works.

--- In many cases, permissions from the studios are required to depict the likeness of the actors and possible fees may be involved.

Got it? Good.

But don't even worry about spending $40 on those posters, because for the most part, you won't be able the above four at MSRP. The first two are prints by a very popular artist: Tyler Stout. His works are so popular they usually sell out in less than one minute when they become available online! Three of the the four prints above are also posters that were sold at www.mondotees.com -- the most popular site for these sweet drawn movie posters. Usually, prints that are sold on Mondo sell out in less than five minutes! They also appreciate in value quite well. The most expensive auction on ebay was for a Mondo/Tyler Thing Variant poster for $2,000!

Section II: How to buy

a. attend the event and buy it there. These prints are usually made for gigs or exhibitions, so if you attend, you're very likely to be able to get one.

b. Mondo Prints ( http://www.mondotees.com/POSTERS_c_12.html )

--- Step One. Sign up to their newsletter here: https://app.e2ma.net/app/view:Join/signupId:1418629/acctId:1406483 and follow them on Twitter https://twitter.com/#!/mondonews
--- Step Two. One day before the prints will go on sale, they will tweet it and send out a newsletter.
--- Step Three. The sale time will always be random. So you need to watch their twitter. Will you best if you have their tweets text to your cell.
--- Step Four. Once they tweet that the prints are on sale, go as fast as possible to http://www.mondotees.com/POSTERS_c_12.html and try to buy buy buy! The print will not be considered yours if you have it in your cart. You MUST check out for the print to be yours.
--- Step Five. If you succeeded, congrats. If not, ebay usually becomes your only option, unless the artist decides to sell some, if any, of the prints allocated to his or herself on their own website.

c. The others.

Purchase them like you would anything else online, but just keep in mind that once they're on sale, because quantities are limited, the sale times may only be for a few hours/days if they're good and well liked. It depends on the artist, the work, and the quantity, really.

ACADEMY LIBRARY AND ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE
TO ARCHIVE ART MOVIE POSTERS FROM MONDO

Beverly Hills, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Margaret Herrick Library is partnering with the Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse theater chain to archive the company’s growing collection of original film posters designed by contemporary graphic artists. The first group of the Alamo Drafthouse’s Mondo posters arriving at the Herrick will include the latest print, a poster for the classic horror film “Frankenstein” (1931), created by Drew Struzan.

The Alamo Drafthouse began producing limited-edition silkscreen posters in 2003. Mondo, the company’s art boutique, now produces more than 120 posters annually, and through it prominent artists such as Martin Ansin, Shepard Fairey, Olly Moss, Tyler Stout and Ken Taylor are commissioned to create new art for classic films, as well as alternative posters for contemporary movies such as “Inglourious Basterds,” “True Grit” and “Thor.”

“We are always seeking out the unusual, and the Mondo collection certainly fits the bill,” said the Academy’s graphic arts librarian, Anne Coco. “We are looking forward to working with the Alamo Drafthouse to ensure that its contribution to the art of movie posters will be around for future generations to appreciate.”

This ongoing gift from the Alamo Drafthouse will be housed along with the Herrick’s existing collection of more than 38,000 movie posters. The posters in the library’s collection are stored in climate-controlled vaults, and are scanned and entered into the library’s online catalog, where they can be viewed by the public.

“We’re extremely grateful to the Academy for its interest in archiving Mondo’s poster collection,” said Mondo Creative Director Justin Ishmael. “We’re fans of movie art, first and foremost, and to have our artists’ work archived alongside some of the classics of movie poster art is an incredible honor.”

The Margaret Herrick Library poster collection includes a wide range of works created by noted graphic artists, such as the Stenberg brothers’ constructivist poster for “Man with a Movie Camera” and Wiktor Gorka’s arresting poster for the Polish release of “Cabaret.” The library also holds all of the film posters designed by Saul Bass, including his groundbreaking key art for “The Man with the Golden Arm.”

Lastly, post your prints. Show us how they're framed and hung upon your walls!

Hi, I am the artist on the "Jack Rabbit Slim's" screenprint that was done for Spoke Art Gallery's June show "Quentin vs. Coen
Round Two – San Francisco", here's a link to the print:

http://store.spoke-art.com/product/dave-perillo-jack-rabbit-slim-s

Anyway, the prints were damaged in transit, couldn't be used at the show and I was waiting to get my insurance claim. I got my "damaged" prints back from UPS after they denied my insurance claim, so basically I now have a batch of slightly bent prints that I am offering up for sale at a discounted price to try and recoup my costs on the print run. Here is a photo so you can see the damage:

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m270/montygog/DamagedJackRabbits.jpg

It's only on the bottom left corner and the prints are slightly bent, if you were going to frame the piece chances are you won't see much of the bend. The size of the print is 16"x24" and is a 3-color screenprint on cougar natural 100# cover stock.

So I am offering these "bent" ones at $25 each plus $8 for shipping in the US or $15 international. The prints will be sent USPS rolled in a tube, i'm not going to bother with insurance on these since they are already bent.

Also, if anyone doesn't want a bent version I have about 6 "mint" copies of the print run that I held on too and never sent to the gallery, those ones are $50 each and $15 for shipping in the US rolled in a tube sent USPS priority mail with insurance.

If anybody would like one they can email me at: montygog@yahoo.com

thanks,
Dave

Well, the Swamp Thing prints went on sale at 8:45 am. The variant sold out at 8:46 am. The regular print sold out at 8:49 am. Congrats to all that managed to buy one.

Great thread. I really, really hate the artificial rarity built into modern printed art. It's just bullshit and prevents people like me from gladly paying money for artwork. I would love some of Tyler Stout's Star Wars posters, but I'm not paying hundreds of dollars for them on eBay. I know there's like a 4000x6000 digital version sitting on his hard drive right now.

The 25 Years of Pixar Prints both sold out in like two minutes. I really wanted one but missed out. Damn. I don't think there are any left at D23 either.

Edit: I think people had it in their carts and ended up not buying it but it went back in-stock for a few minutes and I managed to snag two regulars (one for a friend) but no variants.

Q: can i email you personally and ask you to hold me a copy / sell me a copy of a poster?
A: no. that is actually not how lotteries work.

Q: should i include additional info in my lottery info why you should pick me? (my dog died, my father was captain america, etc).
A: that is not necessary. just include your name and address. keep it simple as they say.

Q: are these personally stamped on the back by you, personally?
A: that is a very specific question. but yes, they should all be.

Q: are you including a free sticker of a man in a skull mask in each order?
A: again, very specific question, but yes, i have a couple different designs, i'll mix it up.

What would non-rich pricing be considered?

If you mean non-ebay prices in the $100s, for Mondo posters, I think the cheapest they're ever offered are would be at $40 prior to shipping =/ Keep in mind you have to buy them from Mondo the moment they're offered to get them at this price.

For these limited printing type of posters, some may be as low as $25, I suppose.

Allow me to plug my local film series with promotional posters, Cinema Overdrive in Raleigh, NC.

logo_bw450.jpg

Cinema Overdrive's merchandise is a lot more accessible than, say, Mondo's. You can sign up for their mailing list and be notified of when a new poster is going to be on sale and I don't believe they usually go out of print instantly or anything like that. Here are some examples of their posters:

If you're local to the Research Triangle in North Carolina, you should absolutely drop by a showing. For everyone else, sign up for their mailing list and keep an eye out for their upcoming posters. Shows in the near future include The Visitor, Deep Red, Pieces, and Return of the Living Dead.

Sorry you missed the Phantasm print! I snagged one as a gift for a friend who's a huge fan of the series. Are you a regular at the showings? If so, if you drop Matt a line he might be able to set aside a poster for you to be picked up in the future.

Was thinking of ordering this one below, does "digital print" just refer to the printing method? I'll still be mailed the poster right?

Yeah, at the time I remember saying to myself, "I dunno if I'm that excited about the poster and I don't know where I'd put it. I'll just pass on it."

Visitor.jpg

The latest Cinema Overdrive poster is for The Visitor, an obscure late 70s Italian horror flick. It's a nice design but I didn't have any urge to see it up on my wall, but for anyone interested it's available starting today for twenty five bucks plus shipping. If you're wondering what The Visitor is all about, I've tried to explain it's charms here.

Upcoming Cinema Overdrive showings include a double-feature of Deep Red and Pieces, plus Return of the Living Dead, so I'm very psyched to see what posters they'll have for these showings.

Kevin Tong's new art print series 'Unfamiliar Objects' is now available for pre-order!

Pre-order here: http://www.thefloodgallery.com/blog...ar-objects-prints-now-available-for-pre-order

The ‘Unfamiliar Objects’ series is about creating visual metaphors for aspects of the world at large through modest objects that are old and largely out of use.

The six prints in this series are all 4 colour screen print on 18 x 24" Off White Cover Paper. Editions of 200.

Unfamiliar Objects - Photographic Memories

6161575766_8a039a2832_b.jpg

Kevin on this print...
"The idea of recording an entire life on film has always had a profound effect on me. Perhaps at the end, there would be millions of photos. What if I could only put them onto a single roll of film? What parameters would I use to decide which moments to discard, which to keep? The very thought turns my mind into a lifeboat on the ocean, so I chose the simple life of a butterfly as my test subject."

Unfamiliar Objects - 25 Cent Treasure

London-TwentyFiveCentTreasure_grande.jpg

Kevin on this print...
"Gum Balls were one of many things I loved as a kid. The bright color and candy flavor clashed with the reality that soon my cherished treasure would be a hard and flavorless chunk of rubber in my mouth. On a long enough timeline and when you stand back far enough, all treasured moments are essentially a Gum Ball, so fleeting and so small, they might not have even happened. Despite this, these Gum Ball moments still mean something to us. They happen and they pass. We could choose to save the Gum Ball by never chewing on it and keep it forever, but then we'd never experience it either."

Unfamiliar Objects - Reaching for Love

London-ReachingForLove_grande.jpg

Kevin on this print...
"Who hasn't played those Crane Claw games at an arcade? The shiny prizes are so close, separated only by glass and yet getting them is nearly impossible. Many people have passions and pursuing those passions at times can be like playing a Crane Claw game to get a prize. Perhaps there's only one prize buried among dozens of empty prize shells. Perhaps there is only the promise of a prize, but all of them are empty. Reaching for the prize could be like grasping at floating dandelion seeds, wherein the act of grasping actually pushes it farther away. Even actually grasping the prize isn't a promise, it could still slip out and be lost again. Then again, some people might just get the prize on their first try."

Unfamiliar Objects - Reel Life to Reel Death

London-ReelLifetoReelDeath_grande.jpg

Kevin on this print...
"There isn't a whole lot to say about this one, the idea is clear."

Unfamiliar Objects - Short Wave Contact

London-ShortWaveContact_grande.jpg

Kevin on this print...
"Being a person living in a modern metropolis is wonderful, but something gets lost. With so many cars, signs, buildings, streets, lights, schedules, phone calls, jobs, meetings, and other distractions, we all become background noise. Often, I wonder just how much gets lost in the rush to gain progress and momentum. Truly listening to someone these days means adjusting one's antenna and tuning the knobs to get the right frequency for the clearest sound. It means turning off the record player and TV and computer and anything else that makes noise other than the Radio. Even when the antenna and knobs are just right, the act of being near the Radio can cause static."

Unfamiliar Objects - The View

6161575918_61e968fe06_b.jpg

Kevin on this print...
"This print builds on the same idea that "Photographic Memories" does. The View-Master was a staple of my childhood. To my dismay, the only paper disks I had were store-bought photo synopses of Disney films. I used to pretend that I could see my future in the View-Master, that each click would give me a view of a moment farther into things yet to happen. How nice would that be? Imagine, before beginning your life, to have a variety of paper disk futures to view which depict choice moments of different versions of your life, then to choose a favourable version?"
