Right sorry for the bump buuuuut the damn game crashes after the intro cutscene even if I skip it.
Straight up crash.
Anyone know what's causing this? Reading online apparently it has to do with my video player? I use Media Player Classic and apparently I should uninstall/reinstall it but that sounds like too much hassle.

You went driving and the handbrake sound is stuck looping? Set your Windows speaker settings to "Stereo" instead of eg 5.1.

Okay, here's the thing. I'm using Logitech G430 headphones that are 7.1 and I'm getting the handbrake sound. I go to my control panel and try setting it to "stereo" but there's only one option, that being 7.1. There's a second page that says to check the boxes of the speakers present in my current configuration: I tried unchecking everything so it's just left and right. That didn't work. (They're greyed out but if I click them they still activate the sound.)

I tried going into my Logitech settings and disabling Dolby surround sound. That didn't work.

I tried going into my Recording Devices and clicking "Stereo Mix" to try and force 2 channel sound, but that did nothing (not that I really expected it to seeing as that's for recording and not playback.)

Do I really have to change headphones, or turn sound effects off entirely, to play this game without the handbrake noise while I'm in the car?

Edit: I'm a moron. I forgot that these headphones can go both into the USB slot (through an adaptor) or the regular jack. So I just had to switch to the regular jack for stereo sound. Crisis averted!

A bump but did anyone get this problem?

A black screen /w visible hud that only happens when looking in some directions, start screen works fine. Googling just gives me a bunch of other black screen errors.

This is right after visiting the art museum, then I didn't play for a weekish and then this happened, never happened before. Only thing I did between then was the new nvidia drivers, but I rolled those back and they didn't fix anything.

Also random npc cars starting driving off road and sinking into the ground, never saw or noticed that before.

Since the recent release of the new season of Twin Peaks, I expect there will be an increase in interest in people playing Deadly Premonition (which was heavily inspired by Twin Peaks).

Like Twin Peaks, Deadly Premonition is a wonderful, bizarre and unique experience. Unfortunately, every single version of this game has serious problems. The original 360 has the horrible over the shoulder camera and the PS3 version has an horrifically bad framerate. While the PC version suffers from a locked 720p resolution and no graphics options!

However, thanks to modder Durante and some other dedicated fans, once you know how to make it work it is by far the best version. There are a few excellent guides that help with this, but many are out of date and some are incomplete.

So I have put together this guide to help everyone new and old get this game up and running at its absolute best. Be warned though, even at it's best the game is pretty clunky. But we can at least get you running Deadly Premonition the best it can be.

Thanks first to LentFilms for his very useful "Essential MODs" thread, and AngularGraphics original NeoGaf thread. And most importantly Durante's DSFix, without which none of this would be possible and there would never exist a half decent version of Deadly Premonition to play!

Ok so read follow these steps carefully and be patient. If you have any issues please post and I will try and help.

INSTALLATION :

Once you have Deadly Premonition installed via Steam or GOG you will need LentFilms "Essential Mod" pack (especially since Durante's site has been down recently). You can find that here -

https://www.dropbox.com/s/qgs8rwzn0vjrsco/DP_Fixes.zip?dl=1
Mirror -
https://www.dropbox.com/s/y2wsdipmxudevel/DP_Fixes.zip?dl=1

This pack includes:

1) Durante's DPfix 0.9.5, this fixes the locked 720p resolution issue.
2) InfiniteNine's HD font/HUD/icon pack.
3) Shlomo's improved textures for the in-game menu.

To install, simply extract the contents of this zip into the Deadly Premonition install directory.

Steam usually = C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Deadly Premonition The Director's Cut
GOG usually = C:\Games\Deadly Premonition\

Next, you need to edit the dpfix.ini file that you just copied into your install location.

Read the instructions in the ini file carefully to understand what settings are what and what your PC is likely to handle. If you simply want 1080p at 60fps with a decent graphics card (anything over a 960 should be good. Let me know if anyone has issues with a card and these settings), then I recommend these settings. Lower them for lesser cards (Note: DO NOT just copy and paste these settings, they are not formatted correctly, manually enter them) -

Then save the dpfix.ini!

If you wish to play with a DualShock 4 (or PS2/3 controller) then you will want Parsnip's button replacement pack. Download this -

Mirror -
https://www.dropbox.com/s/dfzv20q72bzsehl/47549036.dds?dl=1

Then copy to the "tex_override" folder in the "dpfix" folder of your install location.

If you are using STEAM and a DS4 you will have to use InputMapper instead of Steams built-in DS4 support as Deadly Premonition has an issue that messes up the right stick. Make sure you run INputMapper BEFORE running Steam -

https://inputmapper.com/

Next (and this part is missing from most guides but recommended by Durante) you will need RivaTuner Statistics Server in order to maintain 60fps. Without this, the game seems to lock at 45 or under for unknown reasons. Grab that here -

http://www.guru3d.com/files-get/rtss-rivatuner-statistics-server-download,13.html

Install and run. Then add DP.exe to the applications, set "Application detection level" to high and the "Framerate limiter" to 60fps. You will need to run this before launching the game every time so it is running in the background.

Now launch the game and from the launcher go to the options and disable FULLSCREEN (as we are using DPfix to force borderless windowed, which is needed for triple buffering and a solid framerate). You should now be able to launch the game and it SHOULD work and in HD with a solid framerate!

-----------

If it does not work, first try a reboot. For some people, the game only works when it is the first thing ran after a reboot (other than RTSS, InputMapper and Steam/GOG) failing that try these fixes first -

Outside of those, please feel free to post here and I will try my best to help.

And lastly, take a look at the Deadly Premonition fan site Welcome to Greenvale for guides, help, secrets and more -

And my one tip I would give all new players is to complete the "nameless flower" sidequest as soon as possible. It will give you a radio that you can use to fast travel to any location you have been to or peeked into. Saves you from the driving sections that wear out their welcome quickly!

Is this game actually playable on PC now?! I love the hell out of it, but last time I tried it I got crashing issues out the ass.

Damn I'm tempted to follow that guide and make yet another attempt from years of trying and failing to get this game to actually work. Every guide I've followed so far hasn't worked out for me. Can I handle yet more disappointment.

A few months ago it was still utterly broken. We made it to the ending, but it could crash every time a cutscene would play. It made sidequesting a risky proposition, because while the cutscenes in those are really short, they are a lot more frequent than you'd think. Something like a fetch x-amount of things quest will have x+2 cutscenes, all of which could refuse to load and crash instead.

Another persistent issue was that by default, we couldn't aim properly. Aiming down was limited, and aiming up wouldn't work at all. If you wanted to shoot something higher than the default, better pray that your target can be locked on to. The fix for this bug was to run the game in Windows 98 compatibility mode. Doing this however, halved the game's framerate. Since locking on works for 99% of the game, it is manageable, just far from ideal.

The final strange bug was that all NPC cars would be driving in circles. This meant that NPCs that were on the move in the overworld would never reach their destinations by themselves, since they were stuck in an infinite loop. If you wanted to make people spawn at their destinations, you just had to enter and leave buildings so they'd re-instance in the correct spot.

Welp, I tried everything and I can't play. The game litterally runs at 2fps (I've put the settings you suggested, even tried lower, and I've a good rig). It takes forever to get to the title menu. I tried different Windows compatibilites, lowered the settings to the minimum, but it's still the same, 2fps :(
I rebooted and everything. I feel like I must be missing something obvious, it can't be this bad.

Tried playing this and after working on it for an hour and a half, FINALLY managed to start it on my tv with a controller (steam version) and it was mostly okay, then around 2 hours in it crashed hard and I was done with it. I really hope his new game carries on the spirit of this thing, as its super interesting, but I dont have the time or the patience to make this work.
