Well they know they can get away with it so where is the motivation to change? People are going to buy (and enjoy) Destiny 2 regardless.

Could've just stopped the quote right there, he immediately diverts to something completely unrelated to the question, lol.

They got a bit weird/sketchy as well in the PCGAMER interview when they brought up lag/tick-rate, just dancing all around.

It is. Especially since Activision Blizzard has servers.

Balance is a separate issue from connectivity though. Like even competitive games have casual players like OW and Rocket League.

Deliver on a consistently positive experience and people will come back to your game.

I keep rereading these two responses over and over and I can't help but interpret them as "it's fine that Bungie is treating PvP as an unimportant extra because it's fanbase doesn't really care about PvP".

Which is sort of blowing my mind.

Have you played at all? It's a game based on supers and rng loot drops that enhance your abilities. Look at the hoops "sweaty" pvp players jump through to get the game remotely, somewhat competitive on an equal playing ground. Gear sets banned, sub classes, perks, exotics banned. It's laughable.. You're fighting the devs trying to make the game competitive.

I put hundreds of hours into D1, will prob fo the same with D2. But for competitive PvP I'd look elsewhere, or look forward to frustration and disappointment.

Guys they can't afford dedicated servers, it's that simple.

The directors need new yachts, new luxury apartments and new cars. There's just not enough room in the budget for servers. Besides, 60fps is already out of the question as the amount of man hours consumed in achieving this is already allocated for private jet flights, golf days and other activities like casino spending money.

Sorry, it cannot be done, what you're asking for is just unrealistic.

I am a huge Destiny fan and will of course be playing D2 day 1, but this very disappointing news. I assume it's more of a money thing from Activision than a Bungie "backend systems" situation, but it still sucks.

The lag problem with Destiny is two fold. It's part Bungie/Activision's fault and it's part our fault. As long as we keep forming fireteams with people across the world, there will ALWAYS be latency. You can be playing with and against people all from the same region and have one person across the ocean and the experience will be poor. Even if that person has the best internet possible, you will have latency as a result of the distance.

The reduced player count WILL make a difference, but without numbers, we don't know yet. Currently, in a full 6v6 game you need a minimum 1Mb/s upload connection. This is easy to achieve in theory, but in practice many people do not.

Bungie needs regional dedicated servers and not allow cross region fireteams. You should be able to join a queue with cross-region play like many other games allow, but then you acknowledge there will be lag and latency.

Hopefully on PC, most people will be using a dedicated ethernet cable and no wifi like most people use on consoles, so I have hopes the performance will be better.

Quakeworld. 1996. Dedicated servers become the standard for online multiplayer shooters.

Destiny 2. 2017. lol.

What's even funnier is they could rent servers to the community, not have to pay anything to maintain them and *make money* from the rental fees. What a joke.

Agreed. Crucible is basically Mario Kart - the shooter. I played it a lot when it first came out, but goddamn I hated it by the time the first couple DLCs came out. I'm already dreading being forced into it to finish SP quest-lines.

I think that it's a pretty poor showing on Bungie that they don't have dedicated servers for PvP. I'd at least to be able to have a decent tickrate in this game. That said, I don't think Smith's answer was particularly egregious. He could have said, "Who knows? We might have them or not. It really just depends on some variables." Or any other version of a real non-answer.

Before everythin shits a brick about this...

The co-op stuff is fine in D1, connection problems happen as they do with any MMO type game but you're almost certainly not going to be affected by them often.

So it's only really pvp that's potentially badly affected by this.

And until we see their p2p solution we can't tell. They mention it will be based around connection quality to an extent, etc... it could be fine.

Of course, it's bullshit that a company their size didn't' spring for dedicated servers, and I get protests against this kind of practise, but the game could play well enough for it not to be a huge concern.

D1 pvp was a shit-show, and Bungie are notorious BSers when it comes to stuff like this, so I guess we'll see...

I'm amazed there is still so much Halo/Destiny fanboy drama floating around the internet. They are two separate series. If 343 decides to change some aspects of the long-running Halo series, people might get upset whereas if Call of Duty made those exact changes people might not care. I'm confused by why this is a difficult concept to grasp.

I honestly can't see how anyone can defend this decision. Its bullshit and we all know it. Love when these publishers reach unparalleled success with a new IP, just to get chincy with a better working game in the sequel. Like if you are going to invest heavily on a sequel do it right.

It's still a better shooter than any other game out for me personally.

I have tried all the big new games, Overwatch, Titanfall 2, CoD etc etc and they just don't do it for me. Destiny still feels the absolute best to play and it's gunplay is second to none. I play a lot of games with pals and every time I try and play OW for example, I just don't have fun. I wish a company would make a game that felt as good as Destiny with dedicated servers, but right now that's not a reality, so I have to deal. Yep, I'm supporting the beast, but I'm also not about to say "BOYCOTT" ..and then be one of those people who end up playing anyway.

I live in downtown Seattle and I have gigabit Internet, so my Destiny experience has been 90% positive. I have experienced the lag on occasion, but when the game's P2P system is working, Destiny feels very crispy and shots feel great.

Having said that, it's fucked up that I have to deal with P2P when I used to play Quake 20 years ago and I would never join a server with more than 100ms ping.
