Wii Sports Resort, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Wii Fit Plus and the Just Dance sequels did not bomb. But I do think that the Kinect was a one hit wonder that exploded out of the gate and fizzled out very quickly (the definition of a fad I guess)

Wii lived for a normal console lifespan and died when it became saturated and software support dried up. The 360 and PS3 are an abnormality in that respect because they're living longer than most other consoles (thanks to them continuing to get the lion's share of software and marketing support and their high prices, which have yet to truly hit mass market levels)

I think he's talking more about the third-party casual Wii titles that failed to do nearly as well with their sequels.

Which isn't surprising when you consider that few publishers are going to adopt the release strategy of Nintendo where you release a single title with the expectation of it selling throughout the generation. There was Wii Fit Plus, but that was a minor upgrade in some respects and also replaced the original at retail. As well as being sold standalone for a budget price.

We only have the chart positions AFAIK

Kinect Launch Week End November 13 said:
4 KINECT SPORTS XB360 MICROSOFT MICROSOFT

12 DANCE CENTRAL XB360 MICROSOFT MICROSOFT

Dance Central lasted in the top 40 all the way up until week end March 12th. Kinect Sports faired better and lasted all the way up until week end June 11th.

This is a very poor debut for DC2 and I bet it has everything to do with Just Dance 3. Kinect Sports 2 won't have that competition sapping away sales though, so it'll be interesting to see how it does...

Edit: GODDAMMIT! BEATEN like a redheaded step child! Shouldn't have wasted my time copy/pasting all the chart positions and then removing them...

DC1 did great in the UK.
Maybe DC2 is subject to the fact that Harmonix sequels always seem to crash and burn as people stick with the "oh its good enough for me" previous release. Or that the casuals got burned by its difficulty and "lack of fun" compared to the Wii-waggle "dance" games.

No matter what the excuse is, not making the top 40 in its first week will have massive alarm bells ringing right now in Harmonix and Kinect HQ's.

Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero 2 did not bomb, it's not because it's a Harmonix sequel... (it's because of genre saturation and in this case, competition from Just Dance 3)

Sho_Nuff82 said:
I stand corrected. I still think that, like most casual titles, week 1 is a poor barometer.

Of course, but there's a stark difference between the two here (and lets not even get into the holiday sales boost factor here working in favour of the original DC) that is very easily noticeable.

I bet that DC2 won't even chart next week...

3DS is probably over a year away from having enough software to regularly get games that chart.

But really, is anyone shocked that Tetris flopped? I mean really?

I wouldn't count Tetris out yet. It's one of those games that continues to sell a little bit every week until there are millions of them sold. I didn't expect it to chart, especially not since it's a 3DS game and there aren't really that many 3DSs out there yet. Besides, have there even been any commercials for the title? It hasn't in Sweden, although we've been pretty weak over here when it comes to 3DS commercials in general so far. I'm sure if Nintendo advertised that you can now get Tetris for the 3DS, more casual gamers would jump at that.

Edit: How did Tetris DS do it's first week?

That's a sequel to Wii Sports the best selling game ever, a Mario Game, Wii Fit and Just Dance are also 'fad' games.

What about games like Red Steel 2, de Blob 2, Any of the other Resident Evil titles after 4 (The lightgun ones, etc). All the 'second' efforts on Wii (not just sequels) bombed apart from the Nintendo ones you mentioned and Just Dance. Maybe not all the time, but most of the time.

I think the gamers these games were meant for were already burned by the wii by that point. I know I bought Red Steel 1 and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and being really disappointed in both of them, especially Red Steel. After that other RE on-rails game came out, I knew better. No excuse for not buying Red Steel 2 though, that looked alright. But I guess alright doesn't cut it in this day and age.

Dark Souls truly is an anomaly. Incredibly popular across internet forums, barely relevant in the real world.

Well, that's not true. It's done great in Japan and will probably sell a few million worldwide in the end.
Which, for From Software, is an absolute mega-hit.

"Bring more Souls Games, developer of Demon's Souls!"

I might have been the only person to buy Boom Blox 2.

I'm surprised that Dance Central 2 also didn't chart in the Netherlands. I wouldn't call it advertising, I would call what MS did nuclear war. They had a spot during nearly every prime time TV show, had a popular TV personality try it out on television with some other famous dancing guy. The ads feature Kylie Minogue and other stars... the marketing is like Halo level and squeezed in between Vodafone and Coca Cola.

Shit, I forgot tetris 3ds was out this week. And I even bought it. LOL.

3DS is fucked it seems. Will likely get rid of mine soon.

Just Dance is a fad series that has continuously topped the charts for 2 years...

Also, Umbrella Chronicles did very well, breaking over a million worldwide (not as good as RE4 Wii, but that was a mainline game and a sales miracle in of itself!) It was Darkside Chronicles that bombed and that's because nobody wanted a sequel to UC, they wanted a sequel to RE4 and were hoping that it would come after UC! (which in of itself was critically panned)

What "2nd effort" core games didn't do well BTW? Aside from the two games you mentioned (one of which was sent to die in the March 2010 crossfire and was the sequel to a critically panned game), Trauma Centre New Blood (which was crushed by SMG and was a sequel to a title that rode the waves of the Wii launch) and No More Heroes 2? (which still did better than any Suda game that is not NMH1)

House of the Dead? Nope (Overkill did better than HOTD 2&3, which did better than Ghost Squad), Sonic? Nope (Colours did better than Secret Rings, Unleashed and Black Knight), COD? Nope (the series' sales have been continuously rising and now hit around 1.5 million on Wii, despite them doing everything in their power to kill the series' chances on Wii)

It is fucked, I have no doubt of that. Regardless, mine's a keeper, I love the 3D effect.

I'm hoping for an EU release of Nano Assault. That, MK7 & Tetris 3D are enough to stave off buyers remorse for me.

Shin'en is a German studio, so I'd say chances are good.

We will find out how the 3DS is doing in Europe on Thursday. Based on the software sales it doesn't look very good.

I'd think so too but there's no confirmation yet at all, that I can find. Seems odd given that the game is about three weeks away in the US.

I don't think the NanoStray games sold very well :(

I played the first DC it was fun laughing at my friends. As a single player experience though, it only really stands out among its Kinect brethren. Some of those Kinect games GiantBomb reviews are totally broken.

Nice! Skylanders going up! Then again; the game was released late in Week #41; so it was expected. Kinda surprising that is the 360 version so high, and the Wii just charted this week.

And Tetris did 1 of those 2 millions in Japan, while this time...it won't happen, let's just say this.

EDIT:Strangely, it received a sort of an advertising "push" in US, due to Ellen's free 3DS AND Tetris giveaway.

What is it with you guys calling Resistance 3 a bomba in PAL chart threads? It was in the top 20 for six weeks. Did you just move over to PAL after the September NPDs were released, and assumed they were "simultaneous" in some crazy fashion? Because then you've missed the first 4 or 5 weeks of Resistance 3 charting pretty respectably in the UK.

R1 did 300k+ in UK
R2 did 200k+ in UK

R3 is looking like it will do 100k+ at most (September chart will give a better idea).

It's the same situation in Japan (Famitsu);

R1 - 15,741 / 136,492
R2 - 35,182 / 65,191
R3 - 19,255 / 25,278

It's a franchise in terminal decline, and after R3 bombed in US and JP then PAL territories needed to perform better than the medicore at best chart positions it has seen for it to continue to be a viable franchise. In NPD thread JStevenson and others suggested it would show legs in mainland Europe, but we're just not seeing that, which doesn't surprise me as it's well known that UK is the main European market for FPS, and is also the country where it happens to have the best legs.
