Twisted Metal |OT| Don't Eat. Don't Sleep. Play

I was so ready to get this game day one, but then the UK/Europe got screwed over with petty censorship issues, the game was delayed to the same week Mass Effect 3 is coming out, plus a week before my most anticipated game of the year releases. On top of that, a generous bundle offer comes along and convinces me to get a Vita, with a launch roster that'll keep me majorly occupied around the same time frame as this game's delay date.

And that's how, in one fell swoop, all the hype felt for Twisted Metal diminished to nothingness. A shame really, as I had a trip with the demo. Enjoy it for me guys.

I dunno... I just can't shake the feelin' Jaffe was arm-barred into this project by Sony. He's a super-talented guy, and I couldn't be more happy that the game's getting a warm reception, but his work before this and his quick exit from ESP really seems to suggest this isn't where he wanted to be.

I might be completely off base though - i hope so, but it just seems like this wouldn't have been his first choice in coming back to big budget games.

I guess I'd just love to see some original, console based, large scale IP from the guy - he's clearly an industry leader, and a lot of his work changes or creates new genres, so it'd just be great to see what else he can do.

That said, I'm def excited for this - obviously a ton of TLC in this project, and I'm hopin' consumers are smart enough to recognize it.

Black was the game that made me buy a PS2 when I did. Strangely, the franchise doesn't ignite a fire in my loins the same way...but I'd be curious to try it out. Will probably give the demo a whirl if it's still around....which I hear it's not. :(

I bought a PS2 just cause I could continue playing PS1 games aka Twisted Metal games and DVD movies. Now my PS3 I bought for Blu-Ray movies and Twisted Metal which I knew would come.

Welcome, to Twisted Metal |OT|
I wish they would have at least hired the TM2 Calypso VA to play Calypso. If they didn't think he could pull off the look, they could have at least had him dub over this game's Calypso's bad voice.

He's still got it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YmTagPKzP0
TM2's cutscenes had a certain charm and personality to them and a lot of it was owed to Mel McMurrin's delightfully evil delivery.

I'm a bit sad to see that completely gone. Not liking what I've seen of the story stuff at all.

Preordering on Amazon now. Haven't done that for a game before.

Was on the fence about this, but gotta support Jaffe and the demo was pretty damn fun.

Crimson Fury is like a mix of his old self and Pit Viper... Crimson Viper. I'm on board.

Also, custom skins could make Crimson look like Twister... until we get her for DLC.

BECAUSE THIS GAME WILL BE SUCCESSFUL ENOUGH TO ENSURE WE GET DLC.

The Calypso in this game sounds bored. The pre-match explanations are awful.

Yea. I really do agree that I didn't much care for the Calypso in this game. Should have had the original voice actor dub over top the actor. But that's just one of several things I'm not keen on. I'm firmly one of those 1 character per car people. While David has said that the cars are the real characters I just think that the character that used the car was half that character. Course I think that even despite focusing on 3 characters and allowing them to use any care, it will be an amazing game and will enjoy it.

Eh, quite honestly I never cared for the dark stories in past TMs or the characters, just the gameplay and I'm willing to bet I'm not alone. Really I don't get why a vehicle combat game needs to be coupled with such a dark story line because all I imagine it does is turn away people who would have otherwise liked the gameplay. But obviously a lot of people like the stories as well so . . .

I just think it'd work better if the game and the stories were separate entities.

The dark stories started with Black and I thought it was a bad decision. TM2's stories were basically just endings and they were fun. If they are going to have stories in single player they can at least use actors that give a crap and can act. The other actors, from what I've seen, don't suck. Since Calypso is such an important character that spans all stories he was the most important one to cast properly.

The exit more seems to come because of the distance separating him and the team. All of the recent podcasts hes been on make it seem he is tired of working out of his house

I'd actually say the darker stories started with 2. Sure they weren't as dark as Blacks but they were somewhat dark. 3 & 4 don't even count since made by a different studio. I liked playing them but without a doubt you can tell that they didn't understand Twisted Metal in the way Jaffe and the other guys did. I think David put it best when he said that they understood it from more of a marketing level. That being oh they fight in cars and then they get a wish from this guy who screws them over even though Calypso didn't always screw them over. That's what they thought though.

But if you just look at the Singletrac, Incognito, and Eat Sleep Play ones they've always been somewhat dark.

Button mapping prevents me from having any enjoyment of this game whatsoever.

Horrible horrible button mapping for a game involving driving.

Once you get that your thumb should be placed on both [] and X for easy quick turns on Classic, you'll stop thinking like that. Pressure sensitive triggers, especially the terrible PS3 shoulder buttons, aren't needed for this game IMO. Classic TM option is so natural to me.

I've never played Twisted Metal before. Ever.

This is my first time, and everything about this game seems cool enough, it's just the controls won't let me enjoy it. Which is pissing me off because I want to like this game.

It's so completely jarring having brake and accellerate on the same side. Could not get use to it no matter how much I played.

Horrible.

If any game needed fully customisable controls, it was this one.

If you put the brakes on the left, then you'd have to put the quick turn or reverse on R1, which would be considerable worse imo. Now you could make the argument that brake could be on L2, and reverse could be 'hold L2', but that's basically what I do now. I use quick turn 90% of the time, and reverse to brake, and only use the real reverse when I want to come to a complete stop, like when using the sniper.

I dunno, the whole things feels awkward to me.

I'll give it another try tonight.

I mean they were more playful before Black. Black was too dark and kinda mundane (earthly).

I can see your point there. I myself don't mind it though. There is always the chance for someone else to come along and make a great car combat game that is more family friendly.

I haven't played TM in probably 10 years, but the Race controls immediately felt off to me. All I need is Gas + Quick Turn under my thumb and the rest is gravy. I use the actual brakes/reverse like 1 or 2 times per 10+ minute match.

I hated to do it, but I just canceled my preorder. Jaffe's latest interview with Game Informer stating that they had no post-launch plans for DLC content or expansions makes me a bit wary. I'll possibly pick it up after a price drop or two if it sounds like it's great, but with the Vita launch and some big games coming soon, I can't buy it on blind faith given the circumstances.

Here's hoping it's better than I'm expecting, because I'd like to give it a shot, but I'm just not committed enough to go through with the preorder right now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't early videos of PS3 twisted metal show the sniper rifle having a zoom effect; in that it actually zoomed in on the driver or whatever!?

Nice OT!!

This game really needs more exposure. I'm doing my part by recommending it every gamer I know!

Speaking of Calypso, I remember there was one Twisted Metal (forgot which one)...where you can play as Calypso, driving a missile truck! I miss that vehicle...one of my favorite vehicles in TM!

Wary of what? They haven't planned for DLC because they aren't sure how successful the game will be and they're a small team. Jaffe has always said they'll go back to make DLC if it's successful enough.

How can he do that when he left the company? Don't expect DLC for this game.

Not family friendly though. Just not Hostel-style torture porn :p
Saw got old fast. When you are relying on gore to sell the premise rather than clever twists it gets boring. My favorite endings in Black were Outlaw's, Brimstone's, and Roadkill's because that had good twists. Most of the other contestants just got what they wanted.

I think this game looks like it strikes a good balance between Black and TM1&2 from what I've seen. It's just a shame that Calypso's actor is so bad.

There's still a post-launch team in place, including Jaffe, on the look out for bugs, and community feedback. If Sony comes knocking for DLC, they'll probably cook something up.

how many maps are there? the end of demo mention 30+levels, that sounds like a shit load of maps. especially with each map as big as it is.

Oh that sucks for you. I really can't imagine not having this game at launch. Nothing you can sell to get it? A kidney prehaps? Course a couple games or something might do the ticket too. lol

I dunno, I have random tf2 items I want to sell but I don't think amazon accepts paypal :(. Who buys kidneys nowadays?

I'm not gonna have some money for a very long time.

he isn't leaving ESP for months to come, he and ESP will be observing how the game goes and update with patches for balance tweak and stuff. if it sells great, they'll continue support with DLC, otherwise he'll leave ESP when he got his new studio up.

There are 8 base maps. Out of those 8 maps there are 30 levels. These aren't just a wall put up here or there either. They actually thought it out and designed them.

There's 8 maps, 30+ when you include all the variants which will be sections of those 8.

As someone who had Black but wasn't a core player and only played the originals at a friend's house here and there, I am extremely excited for this game. Sad that the demo has expired.

What's funny is the SP portion made me "F yeah!" because of old school mechanics. But the online made me "Holy F this is a F-ing beast of a game!"
