I think that's an automated dash triggered by trying to attack a target that's too far away. It happens in the demo sometimes. It'd be nice if we got a forward, forward dash upgrade, though. :p

I don't think it's an automatic dash when the enemy is far away, since that's a really far dash and there's no attack after the dash. Looks like some new move, probably a double tap like what you're talking about.

I don't really like any sort of automation, personally. It just breaks whatever it is I was actually trying to do. Raiden automatically doing a backstab if someone is behind him is another one. Then again comboing in this game is the mashiest I've ever seen, so I guess it doesn't matter all that much in the big picture.

It's probably because of the string he's doing. Besides, he homes into the enemy, because he's locked onto him...

Nope, if you're somewhat near an enemy and press wide attack, Raiden will automatically lock into it and rush/hop at it. You don't even have to point at anyone. It's not part of a string. This is in the demo.

There is an attack(raiden goes into the forward roll stab light attack he has) so it could be just mashing light

but who knows

Is it February yet?

Is that attack automated though? It looks like the forward dodge to me.

And I really hope the dash is not automated in the final game, this is pretty stupid

I think I must have tried everything. Is there some movement that the stinger connects to? The way he just stops afterward is bugging me.

There's that much of a delay? Looks kind of awkard if it's linked since he sort of stands there for a second.

Going into blade mode cancels everything. But no, it doesn't properly connect to anything.

That demo left me more concerned than impressed... especially cause I know if revengeance tanks I'm going to have to listen to morons saying Ninja Theory beat Platinum at their own game.
Beside the point, here's hoping that demo represented a strip down load out. Really wish there was a dodge roll and a camera center though...
Also, Platinum's music direction sucks on this one... should have retained Kojima's staff for that.
But, the story was not too bad, I have to admit. Good characters, decent plot. Still perfer Kojima's epic stuff, but it's good.

Isn't camera center R3 like every action game?

Since unlike games like Arkham it isn't random. The move you get depends on positioning in relation to the target.(I.E at that distance Raiden will always hop forward to meet the enemy, where as if you shift focus to an enemy behind raiden he'll always do the under-the-shoulder backwards stab)

Zone of the Enders style!

Think of a lot of those specials (stinger, dive kick, palm strike, breakdance) as combo enders or situational things. The stinger is best used in the demo as a way to close the gap between you and your enemy quickly.

Me and a friend are looking forward to Revengance so much, we're doing playthru's of all the MGS games starting with Twin Snakes. Not looking forward to 2, but we will probably skip codecs.

Yay! The DMC ones were lovely, btw.

Whyyyy!!?!?!?

We were gonna do the old NES/MSX titles, but didn't have enough time till MGR comes out. I also argued the fact that the PSX version is superior due to the music, however his argument was that the gameplay changes/action sequences in Twin Snakes would make for a more enjoyable/funny playthru.

Thanks a ton dude. Personally, I'm gonna try to get us to blast through Bayonetta before MGR as well seeing that's the closest game to the style of it.

You're still a Silver member, it's like a 48-hours code.
Haha, this actually was my plan for comparing both versions. I had some 48-hour code from 2008 stashed for emergencies, but it didn't work. The PS3 version is fine, though, so whatever. :(

The story isn't by Platinum Games though. It's the work of Konami Productions.

Really doesn't feel like it, reminds me a lot more of Anarchy Reigns[although much more subdued]. I think they just over saw it, not actually wrote it... or it's some staff so far out from the Kojima circle, they haven't the same touch.

That's what I've mainly been using it for. When say the gekko hops away I'd use it to get closer. But then that animation afterward just slows me down. I'd be great if every game had animations that flowed into each other.

No the Lead Writier on the project is Etsu Tamari from Kojima Productions

Who was a writer for MGS4 and Peace Walker and also the Lead Writer of the original Rising scenario

I still believe things were changed to fit in with platinum's style. Sombrero Raiden man.

The forward dodge is a hop and a slash, this is a somersault that goes much further with a different animation. It does either that or the forward roll into a stab when you first engage someone from range, along with the backwards stab if someone's behind Raiden.

I'd normally agree with the arguments about the automation and difficulty, but it seems like this is a Metal Gear game before it is a Platinum game, and seeing how much wrangling it took just to get some people to figure out the parry, I'm not so sure anymore. There's some interesting stuff under the surface so the real test is to see what kind of challenges Revengeance or Hard difficulty brings. Just mashing against the grunts in the demo will eventually lead them to block and parry, so I assume they'll be more aggressive on defense in the full game.

Has anyone gotten the gekkos to do a bull charge? I saw one in a trailer once but have yet to see it in the demo.

Sadly no move support.

I quite enjoyed the demo, it left me wanting more. I did find it hard to get to grips with parrying, wouldn't a dedicated button be better (R1)?

I'm still salty that David Hayter did so much to bring the original cast back for twin snakes, only for the international characters to become American.

Yeah I can't imagine the game getting nearly as melodramatic as the climax of MGS4 or PW probably due to Platinum influence

but the scenario itself definitely has close ties to the mainline games. At least staff wise.

Definitely agree, watching people play bad games is much more fun.

Hmm... well then obviously directing has much more effect on the story than the actual writing, I'd say.

Naomi and Mei Ling sounded hilarious in the PS1 version though.

I think you're right! It happend to me a couple of times when I first played against robodog in the demo!

As silly as they were (being from the UK made me spot some inconsistencies in Naomi's accent), it gave the games a nice 'a specialist team recruited from all over the world' feel. Also, considering the characters' back-stories american accents are even weirder.

Anyway, what to people think about Rising's voice acting? Reminds me of an Anime for some reason.

Yeah, the acting is pretty laughable.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Mei Ling and Naomi's accents in the original MGS made no sense. Mei Ling was born and raised in America, and Noami was born in Rhodesia, spending a vast majority of her young and adult life in the US. MGS4 canonised what was already canonised in Twin Snakes.

What? Were you planning on leaping off the furniture and bouncing off the walls? I'm sure your parents/landlord are grateful that this game doesn't support motion controls.

Head for refinery!

I think MG:R's voice acting is shit. But I don't really care.

That's what I've come to expect from P*, and I've grown to love. There's so much coming at me I really don't have time to pay attention.
