Sony Management Discusses F2Q 2011 Results - Earnings Call Transcript
Sony's Masaru Kato said:
First, I will explain the result of consumer product and service segments. CPS segment sales decreased 12%. This was primarily due to LCD TV sales price declines, resulting mainly from deterioration in market conditions in the West and unfavorable foreign exchange rates, as well as lower PC sales, reflecting price competition. Operating loss was ¥34.6 billion, compared to plus ¥1.0 billion in the same quarter last year. This decrease was driven primarily by deterioration in the cost of sales ratio and decreasing gross profit resulting from the decrease in sales, offset partially by decreasing restructuring changes. You can see positive and negative factors contributing to CPS segment.

Now, sales in the TV business decreased 17% to ¥213 billion, due to the price declines resulting from the deterioration of the operating environment. During the quarter, LCD TV unit sales were basically unchanged at 5 million units, although unit sales decreased significant in Japan, and also in Europe and North America. But unit sales in developing countries increased significantly.

Excluding restructuring charges, an operating loss was ¥41 billion, a deterioration of ¥25 billion. This was due to market price declines and fixed asset impairment. The impairment was ¥8.6 billion. Without it, loss would have been approximately ¥32 billion.

Next is the Game business.Game business sales, which include network service revenues, decreased year-on-year due to the strategic price reduction of PS3 hardware undertaken in August in advance of the year-end holiday selling season, and the PS2 business as a whole, which continues to have steady demand in developing countries, but has peaked out and is shrinking. PS3 hardware unit sales were 3.7 million units, the highest ever for the seven quarters since the launch of the product in 2006.

Operating income for Game business has decreased year-on-year. Although we continue to reduce the manufacturing costs of PS3 hardware, operating income decreased due to the change in the price of PS3 hardware. Customer expectations for the PlayStation Vita, which we will launch in December are very high. Sales of the PS3 have been strong due to the benefit of the change in price and the support of strong software sales. Going forward, several hit titles are scheduled to be released. We temporarily halted the PlayStation Network due to the unauthorized access incident. But since restarting the service, customers are again utilizing the service and results are trending favorably, as customers are purchasing a great deal of content, including new popular game titles.

The PS2 still sold 3.8 million...amazing.

It should easily reach 4 million before the end of this year.

Edit: It might even reach 5 million.

CPS division had a loss of $449 million USD; the entire company posted a $21 million USD loss.

Will they factor in the Sony Ericsson purchase in Quarter 3? That's gotta mess up their finances...

i get the feeling this is the last fy we'll see ps2 hardware. they're just not selling any software for the machine anymore. it'll probably get up to 160m and stop.

PSP sales are up this year but we never get PSP figures in any NPD report. Must be Japan/Europe doing the most sales.

X360 had 1 year advantage. Next time make sure your console has decent LIVE support everywhere, MS.

It only beat last year's quarter by .2.
You have to remember that without price cut PS3 Q1 of FY2011/12 sales were 1.8 million in comparison to Q1 of Fy2010/11 of 2.4 Million.
So PS3 would have sold around 2.6 million instead of 3.7 million in Q2 of Fy2011/12 if Sony had not reduced the price.

Christ, will the 360's WW advantage be gone by this time next yr?

The 360 will probably add 1 million+ over the PS3 between November and December in NPD. It sold about 1.4 mil more than the PS3 in Nov and Dec. 2010 and things really haven't changed much since then.

Yes. 37.4 million software units this quarter compared to 35.3 million software units in the same period last year.

PS3 has a pretty good holiday lineup in Japan, and Europe. Those should erode the NPD difference.

Kinect was released last year and it killed whatever lead PS3 had till then. I don't think it can do the same this year, though. Interesting to see if MS will drop the price as well, but seems unlikely.

With that StarWars themed Xbox 360 coming, you have to figure a lot of people will be buying that just as an extra console.

But even if that happens, it's not gaining. NPD November and December are like the video game sales playoffs or something. It's where momentum is really gained and lost. If PS3 stays reasonably close to the 360 in those NPDs combined (within 500K), it's looking good. If it gets washed out by ~1.5 mil again, any gains it made during the year are gone.

it might or it might not.. Kinect exploded last year.. and now it has fizzled out a bit also star wars game got delayed.. so XBOX may not be so hot this time.... it is still selling a lot better than MOVE but not as much better as last year..
just my view

Wasn't that delayed until like Spring 2012?

If they stay even again, shouldn't history have Sony closing the gap in the non-holiday quarters?

By maintaining 15 million goal for PS3, Sony is expecting to have better Q3 than last year... will it happen?

Wouldn't they have announced a price drop by now? I see bundles and gift cards instead.

That's true. But also don't forget the 360 has outsold the PS3 monthly in NPD for a long time, and has been the overall monthly NPD leader for almost as long. The US is really hot on 360 right now. I don't think the 360 will have as good a year as last without a price drop, but I still see it over the PS3 in Nov and Dec by a sizable margin, roughly 1 mil combined, maybe a little less.

Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt the circle jerk!

Sony is now forecasting a 4th straight year with a net loss. Forecast was revised from a 60B yen profit down to a 90B yen loss.

Operating income revised down 90%. 200B down to 20B.

Really shitty quarter for all Japanese companies.

The PS3 is doing pretty well, it has the benefits of selling "good" on all markets, something 360 fails (japan is a lost cause, europe is better but it is the NA market that is the bread and butter for MS).

About the lead,
MS should have done more/better with the 1 year lead, otoh, the PS-brand is quite strong, even though it has lost much of its luster, that and some compelling titles are what is driving sales now.

I think it will be pretty even steven during 2012 but then next gen starts all over, MS will most likely be out first and will be coming into that gen, with a stronger brand as well.

MS managed to more than double it sales from Xbox, it will be interesting what happens with Xbox version 3.

And weak consumer spending in EU/US. US revenue is down 18% for the first six months YoY.

It's also Sony's fault for not having kept up with the latest trends, they don't have a strong tablets division, they are only just bringing their mobile phone division in house when people have been telling them to do it since 2008, they haven't brought nice high margin, expensive OLED TVs to market even though they could, tomorrow. Sony are a company that has missed too many boats and I would now not rate them as investment grade.

I'm not even sure Kaz will fix anything when he takes over as CEO, the corporate culture at Sony is not conducive to being focussed and early to a market where speed and efficiency matter more than anything else.

Even so, good PS3 sales, the one decent spot of news for them right now. Vita should do well too.
