Bought it despite still having to beat 3, 4, 5 (Probably won't get to play 4 and 5, but who knows).
Somebody please buy my cards so I can make a little money back.

I'll buy this once I finish Ys: Oath (soon).

Currently stuck in the ice cave place (after scaling mountain) and I have utterly no clue how to get out of this place.

So we have 1-3 (including Oath) and origin on pc and now 6, what happened to 4 and 5?

Memories of Celceta on Vita is pretty much the modern Ys 4. It seems really unlikely that it'll ever come to PC but who knows.

Ys 5 is on SNES and has a remake on PS2 (which I believe is not made by Falcom so don't expect to see that one re-released).

We technically have:

Ys O (Origin) - Steam
Ys I - Steam
Ys II - Steam
Ys III (Oath in Felghana) - Steam
Ys IV (Ys: Memories of Celceta) - PSP Vita only - Chinese PC Port Joyland or something like that
Ys V - SNES - needs to be remade by Falcom and Taito PS2 Version (Semi-remade)
Ys VI - Steam
Ys 7 - PSP only

So we hope to see Ys IV MoC; Ys 7; and remake of Ys V for Steam.

Hopefully Falcom is able to Port Ys MoC and Ys 7 to PC and then Xseed and do the English versions.

Also Falcom needs to remake Ys 5 again.

Ah I see, here's hoping Memories of Celceta gets released on PC, I guess the only way to play 5 is to emulate it?

Also are they all linked story wise or can you just play whichever one you want?

Unfortunately VI is probably the last viable Ys PC release. And I don't really expect that to change going forward since it seems unlikely Falcom is going to develop PC ports of their games regardless of how well they sell in the west, and I'm not expecting XSEED to pick up the Chinese ports (Seven has one, is Celceta getting one?).

I thought Joyoland( Found the link): http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=790469

They porting Ys MoC as well. But we'll have to see how good its going to be though.

It'll be a long shot, but to have three way deal with Xseed, Joyoland and Falcom for the US/NA English release of the game on to the PC…

Ah, it's every bit as good as I hoped for so far. The only thing that threw me off was the boss enemy with 1800HP. Oh well, I had been warned NOT to go to that area :D.

Question to the veterans: Is there any reason NOT to sell the potions which heal status effects? I stupidly drank one when I was poisoned, after that I saw that I can sell them for 4.5k each. Right now that seems to be quite a bit of money, considering I own two of them.

I want this so bad, but my backlog is already imense at the moment D=

Depending on the psn sale today, I might bite this.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Honestly, this was one of the less memorable Ys titles for me, but then again I played the PS2 version, which changed the models and added shitty voice acting in. And the PSP version with its atrocious load times and terrible graphics. I'm interested in finally getting an English PC version, and even more interested that its available on GOG. Gonna definitely give this another chance.

Won't be able to play this until next weekend... Looking forward to it extremely. The boss fights in Oath and Origin are nearly perfect.

Both! ;) I like to compare the Ys series to Star Trek: The Next Generation in that respect (mostly just because I really love TNG!): it's fully episodic, but there are overarching storylines that kind of play out in the background and are pretty fascinating.

But just like with TNG, you can start pretty much anywhere and work your way back, and you'll still have just as much fun as if you started from the beginning (maybe even more, since the first season of TNG is really rough!). ;)

The visual loadout feels...off. I can't find any resolution options, and the widescreen feels zoomed and cropped rather than naturally presented. Parts of the UI even seem cut off. It looks weird.

Am I missing something completely obvious?

You are missing the configuration utility. Right click the game on Steam and go to "run configuration."

What version do you have? On Steam you have to choose between "Run Game" and "Run Config" when you klick on play.

In the config you can set stuff like resolution, controls and visual effects.

If GOG doesn't give you the choice - I bet there's a file named something like "ysconfig.exe" in the install directory. Just klick that and set your options.

EDIT: And then there's this when you open the config, but I have no idea what she's supposed to be saying when you right-click her and choose "talk"

EDIT 2: What is the minimum framerate setting for? 12fps as highest setting seems...pointless.

Just beat the first boss of the game. Hard Catastrophe mode may have been...a gutsy choice.
Who would have thought that the bosses normal fire attack that tracks you would have been the hardest one to deal with vs. the claw swipes and arena-wide fire breath?

Bought it on gog. Playing on Normal Catastrophe and the first boss wasn't that hard. Forgot the checkpoints were also savepoints, it's be a while hehehe.

Anyway I'm having a blast.

I easily got the "beat a boss without taking damage" achievement on the first boss, however the "beat a boss with 1 HP remaining" one is gonna take some doing.

Just for comparison's sake...how much damage did the attacks from normal enemies do to you so far? The underground passage up ahead could end up being harder than the boss for you lol

Best tip for that area is to not forget about your downward midair stab attack.

Yeah. The last room of the passage
when you get spammed by like 20 of these little shits
...I don't think I'd have survived it if had forgotten about that attack.

I just ran past all of them. I had to buy this since I've bought all the rest of the Ys Steam games. Love it so far!

You missed an instant Level-Up in just that room though ;)

EDIT: Just noticed the trading cards in my steam inventory. Holy shit, the card descriptions are cracking me up.

The Priestess - "The priestess, dutiful as always, dutifully attends to her duties."

Caged
Priestess
- "
Olha: "This isn't my usual cage! Get me out of here!
"

I did that for the most part, but their was one room that had a staircase that they couldn't climb up. I'd downstab them and then retreat up the stairs and take very little damage. Repeated that till I snagged a level up.

Wasn't able to win the duel with Gaius though.

In retrospect, I could have beaten the first boss without damage if I had been more conservative. The attacks were all very dodgeable, it's just that the normal fire attack was hard to get away from if you were right in front of the boss.

Status ailments are your friend for that one. ;)

Sorry to double post but I have a question

I thought the point of catastrophe mode was that to trade off for not being able to stock pile healing items enemies would be more likely to drop instant heal items all oath and origin. So far I don't think I've seen one healing item drop minus status heals which would be fine if things on hard didn't deal so much damage at such a low level. Don't even want to guess how much tougher they hit on nightmare.

Edit: So one did finally drop, so do I just have really bad luck? Or is catastrophe's drop rate lower then oath/origin for healing drops?

I'm not sure about there being a difference in drop rates due to catastrophe mode, but I'm in nightmare + catastrophe and I have yet to receive a healing item other than status heals. I've played up to canaan so far.

I've had a few healing items drop, but not enough that I would say you should regularly rely on them like in Oath/Origin. I'm guess they raised the drop rates in later Ys games to make up for the fact that you use items instantly.

On a related note, I need to get used to not needing to run around and collect gold, although you do have to for the magical stone of this game (elma?)

Can you win
the first geis fight, He like 4 shot me and it was gonna take like 60 hits to kill him at level 7

Oh crap in the process of trying to win the above fight... I deleted my save by accident -.- hour of progress gone

I just made a separate save for that fight to try and beat as a challenge thing later. It seems beatable...albeit very difficult.

In all honestly, I personally think Oath in Felghana is a better game in terms of gameplay, music and level design -- but Ys VI is slightly easier (in non-Catastrophe mode, at any rate) and has the better story and characters. So it's up to you.

I think Oath in Felghana is a better introductory work to the series, personally, but they're both fine choices.

-Tom

Appreciate it! I'll pick up Napishtim after work, then get Felghana at some nebulous later date.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Man, I'm almost glad it took almost 2 years after Oath and Origins for this game to come out in the US. It's like a breath of fresh air. Played through the first boss and... yeah, I love it.
