How does it hold up? Perfectly. Gameplay is glorious EXCEPT FUCKING PARAGWAY MISSION!!!!

What happened in Paraguay? The only mission I can recall in any detail is the first one (which I did several times 'cause I taxed that particular region at huge rates) and Atlantic Accelerator.

It's either Paraguay (thanks for correct spelling) or Uruguay. It's an escort mission where my 12-year old reflexes failed me. You have to escort a civilian, and from 10th-15th second there is non-stop attack by enemy agents directly at your position. The civilian dies in one shot.

I never passed that mission, AA was easy by comparison. That was the only mission I didn't do.

Hero 2: Will you be the kind of hero that was friends with a rabbit?

Garrett's fence (the subject of Mission 2) was named Cutty.
There's a famous tea clipper named the Cutty Sark.
Sark was the villain in Tron, played by David Warner.
Warner Bros. created Bugs Bunny.

QED!

I'd say Hitman and Thief are too close to one another. Do bear in mind that the original news post said that Twitter would hint at one character, Facebook at a different one. All the hints we've seen so far have been Twitter ones (referencing "Hero 2").

I'm kinda hoping that if it's indeed Square-Enix, we might be getting Final Fantasy 7 and 8 through GOG.

Overview of all hints so far:

Hero 1 (Facebook) said:
He/She is not a hidden hero ...
Our Hero 1 is cold, solid, and a bit of a loner. Also, he "works" for a huge organization. Can you find him on the list?

Hero 2 (Twitter) said:
Hero 2: Will you be the kind of hero that knows how to stay unnoticed?
Hero 2: Will you be the kind of hero that was friends with a rabbit?
Yes, we can confirm or deny that the hint on the front page is, in fact, a red herring to throw you off the scent ;)

Publisher hint:
The company decided to make PC games in 1982, but its beginnings date several years back.

Whoa, that last hint means it could be KONAMI:
October 1982, Konami began manufacturing and selling PC games.

There is little over-arching story. You are a mindless drone for a mega corporation, go kill agents of other corporations and secure each country for your employer.
I thought you were an executive for the corporation, controlling agents from your zeppelin (which blows up if you fail too much). Hence the R&D control, overhead camera angle, etc.

Hmm Eidos was founded in 1990...

Lucasarts (aka LucasFilm Games) was founded in 1982... oh shit.

Oh. Shit.

That makes the Bunny hint Sam & Max. First hint might be Kyle Katarn.

I'm now convinced that it's KONAMI, due to the publisher hint.

Metal Gear Solid fits, but Silent Hill does not. What else is there in terms of heroes?

Kyle Katarn works for an organization?

He was an imperial soldier and now "works" as a contracter by the republic.

I'm now convinced that it's KONAMI, due to the publisher hint.

Lucafilm makes more sense. Their games division opened in 82 but they obviously existed as a film studio well before that.

Konami also wasn't one of the "Big 5" they originally listed.

Oh, please let it be Silent Hill 2. I'd really like to play SH2, but its PC version doesn't appear to be available anywhere nor work on modern systems. If only they were prepping the PC market for the Silent Hill HD Collection.

I'd personally love to see Road Rash.

True, but they never said that this is one of the "Big 5". I also think they would have made much more noise if they really got one of the "Big 5". A two day countdown is really tiny compared to their previous stunts.

Well, we'll see.... :)

Thief would be super difficult, anyway. It does not play well with modern systems at all, and though diligent modders and hackers in the community have made modified versions of the engine to get it to run it's still temperamental.

I mean, I'd love for them to do it so they can invest in making it (and subsequently, Thief II and System Shock II) play nice with modern PCs.

All the Thief games work fine on modern systems. I've played to completion all of them in 2011 on Windows 7 64-bit with a couple tweaks. In fact, I just installed them to my MacBook Air (running W7) this month.

I also played System Shock 2 start to finish on the same computer.

Edit: The rabbit thing is throwing me off the Thief scent.

A Red Herring was a puzzle solution in one of the early Monkey Island games.
A "cold, solid, loner" hero who works for a larger organization would seem to describe Manny Calavera.

Damnit. It better be Lucasarts.
Hmm, in 1982 Lucas Arts did not make PC games, but Atari games (from wikipedia: "Versions for home computers were not released until 1985"). But the clue states that the company "decided to make PC games in 1982". Maybe the clue is worded incorrectly...

This is the minimum most people on Vista and beyond have to do to play a Dark Engine game.

DDFIX, which solves a lot of problems, comes with its own issues like Windows sometimes deciding it doesn't like it.

The codecs required to play the videos may (on some systems) need to be re-registered everytime you play the game to be displayed.

That is hardly the definition of "work fine". For some systems it does, for some it doesn't. It's a bit of a mess.

Forgot about DDFix, but I guess I'm just lucky. I saved a configuration that works for me on an HDD and I've copied it to two other machines in my home and they run great. Widescreen resolutions working and no codec issues. I'm running the 3-in-1 that's available on Amazon, installed from the DVD, so maybe that's part of it. I've never tried any ISOs or anything like that.

Doesn't look like Thief is on the menu for Thursday anyway. :(

If it's Hitman, then it's Eidos, if it's Eidos then Thief is definitely on the plate. Just perhaps not this week.

I just want System Shock 2 that works properly :(

I'd do just about anything for this. I own the boxed game and boot it up time to time, but a handy digital version for all to enjoy would be divine.

Keep hoping, I guess.

Edit: Re: Hero 1, I suppose Garrett "works" for the Keepers, but that seems like a stretch. JC Denton seems more likely (as the GOG forumites have gathered.)

New clue on the main page - "Be the best cyberpunk sleuth"

Omikron: The Nomad Soul was published by Eidos and fits the bill. Not sure if it fits any of the hero clues though.
