NeoGAF Games of the Year 2010 Awards

Awesome.

Again, the most definitive and well-rounded GOTY awards out there. GAF knows games. This is the true GOTY awards.

Also a lot of great purchase suggestions. I already picked up Vanquish due to GAF and what a great decision it was.

I look forward to picking up ME2 and the top-down Tomb Raider in the new year.

I'm probably just missing it, but under what name did X-Men Classic Arcade get counted?

It was disallowed for being little more than a ROM dump, IIRC.

Also, I've fixed the genre on Civilization V, making Game Dev Story the Simulation Game of the Year. Civ V is runner-up to StarCraft II in the strategy genre.

The downloadable stats file in the OP has been updated with all of the platform and genre fixes, so please re-download it if you're interested.

Ugh...I knew that Mass Effect 2 was going to win. I think Red Dead Redemption is a much more deserving winner.

Give it time and the backlash for Mass Effect 2 will turn into another MGS4 winning GAF's GOTY for 2008 situation.

Also, 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors being ranked at 56 is soooo wrong. Other than that the list is fairly good...

Overall, 2010 = the best year ever for gaming! Donkey Kong Country Returns will forever be my GOTY 2010! :D

Considering ME2 came out in January, it's already almost been a year since release and it clearly has a big fanbase that would have turned by now. I don't see where the "inevitable" backlash is going to come from for the game, aside from the same couple of ME1 fans who keep going at it.

999 being ranked 56 is actually pretty surprising. Not a whole lot of people know about it, and it came out at the end of the year.

I think it made the list of pretty much everyone who played it though.

Man, for a guy who usually plays some odder out of the way games I was pretty mainstream this year. Of my nine picks I think only Monday Night Combat (came in at #92) was out of the top 25 overall games. I think Steam sales hurt me here, as many of the funky single player games that I play these days are usually a year or so behind the times and I can't count 2008 or 2009 games for my list.

I think you've quoted the wrong person... I've never actually even played 999 :p

Same ol' pointless GOTY list as anywhere else, but honestly, how do any of you consider ME2 an RPG? I enjoyed it quite a bit, but an RPG?

Yeah, ME2 has already had it's backlash and still hit number 1.

Also, I've never played a Metal Gear game in my life, but a year after the 2008 GOTY voting, MGS4 had a pretty decent showing in the Greatest Games of All Time voting ahead of a lot of high profile games, and soundly beating any other 2008 entry: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=380379 . So I don't really know what the MGS4 situation is imagined to be. Some people that didn't really like the series enough to play it the year it came out didn't really enjoy it? Big deal.

If only it was out a bit sooner, seeing it behind Heavy Rain for Best Adventure is just sad.

Another awesome aspect to this EXCELLENT Awards thread (seriously guys, you did incredibly well this year, so much work put into it!) is that it can be bookmarked to look at some of the incredible titles that many of us may have not thought of or even heard of before - I actually ended up buying stuff like 999 and Super Meat Boy because of GAF.

Yeah, just go into knowing that the overarching Reaper storyline doesn't move very far forward at all and I can't imagine you'd be disappointed. They've written some really compelling characters into this one.

Even by the end of the first game, I didn't feel like there was much exposure on the reapers at all, though I definitely enjoyed exploring the really well written character backgrounds during every break on the Normandy. So it's like Bioware added more story to the more enjoyable aspect, though in the third game they'd have to make the reaper's plot compelling enough, as it ends the arc.

Nice! 6 of my picks made it to the GAF top 10. And 8/10 were in the Top 20.

RDR is still my personal pick for GOTY. But ME2 was my #2 and still a very fantastic game.

It's partially my fault, I should have ranked it higher, but Vanquish should have been in the top ten. I would definitely put it over most of the games in the top 3-20 or so. It's pretty fuckin awesome.

This is why a GOTY contest 6 or so months after 2010 would make sense. It puts things into perspective.

I'm glad to see my 4 point nod to Lara Croft:GoL probably helped get it into the Top 20, really loved that game. Surprised that RDR didn't win, especially since multiplatform titles dominated in the overall voting, I haven't played ME2, but I will definitely check it out to see how I feel about it.

Just saw this.
Most of the results were expected, the positioning was surprising. With all the negative talk about Mass Effect 2 was expecting it lower but in the top 5.

As far as the OP goes, great job. :)
So much data and stuff, no complaints here; so thanks for all the effort; keep up the great work. (the similarity thing is insane, wow XD)

2011 is gonna be a much better year, but no doubt that Uncharted 3 will win the GOTY award over here. It's a given, unless the game is a major disappointment, which is still possible.

Didn't see this thread posted. Excellent OP and thanks for all the hard work. Little surprised you used my blurb for Game Dev Story, thank you. I'm honored. :)

Don't forget that everyone who voted for Heavy Rain this year was disqualified from ever participating again (if they don't have GAF Gold, that is). That should curb some of the Uncharted 3 votes as well.

I love the fact that GAF has far more influence on a lot of the western side of the gaming industry because of how unbiased it is. These are always hands down the definitive GOTY lists.

Personally - I do think ME2 deserved it (although I never got round to playing RDR, waiting on a PC version).

It didnt stop MGS4 from being GAF's 2008 GOTY

It's only January and I'm already reconsidering my list after playing a game in my backlog. 999 probably would've taken #5 had I beaten it before the year was over.

Don't forget that Zelda: Skyward Sword comes out next year. Those two will likely battle to the death.

but if it comes out next year then they won't be battling because uncharted 3 comes out this year

Proffessor Layton got shafted. Thanks GAF.

Overall, I respect the GOTY award and is glad BC2 and SMG 2 is getting the recognition they deserved.

Too bad I haven't played many new games last year, hence me commenting fairly lowly.

Portal 2.

PORTAL TWO.

I think Skyward Sword will be in the top five, but not the top spot, unless it's universally praised for everything it does (including controls, which it won't be).

Arkham City will probably be another top 5 spot. I think GOTY will be between Portal 2, which will have a strong backing from Sony fans as well as being a damn fine game (probably similar to Bayonetta having stronger backing from 360 owners), Uncharted 3, and to a lesser extent, Mass Effect 3.

I think the only way Skyward Sword gets the top spot is if the Sony fans split their vote so that Uncharted 3 doesn't get every Sony fan's top pick. Not sure that's going to happen though. Portal 2 might do it for the Valve support... but of course, I think if Last Guardian comes out it will definitely pull some votes from the Sony crowd as well. But based on the tendencies of GAF and the continuous lean away from the Wii, I figure the ceiling for Skyward Sword may be #3, where Mario Galaxy 2 ended up this year.

I think we'll end up seeing L.A. Noire in the Top 10 -- It will be heavily publicized due to the Rockstar connection, and if Heavy Rain can get picked in the Top 10 for... no identifiable, valid reason..., L.A. Noire's facial animation and superior voice acting alone would earn it a spot.

The Witcher 2 should show up as the premier game for the PC crowd. And Rage if it's coming out this year? If there's a big 3DS game that makes it by the holiday I could see it doing well as new owners flock to it. Anyway, it'll be an interesting year.

Not to accuse any one fanbase of being entirely rigid or something, but there's Last Guardian, Twisted Metal (there's a Sony game I'm old enough to be nostalgic for), Killzone 3, and Uncharted 3 all hitting this year, so the votes might be split a little more than just that.

There's also the chance that any one of them actually underwhelms. I don't see it coming from Naughty Dog, because they've never made a bad sequel to anything, but there could be a "been there done that" feeling like what happened with SMG2.

But personally, I think Skyward Sword's gonna get reamed here and elsewhere. Even in the chance that it's really, really fantastic, the fact that it's motion controls only means some people will be predisposed to not liking it (nothing wrong with that) and the fanbase for it will probably be limited.
