This isnt really Ottawa, more Hull. But god damn the St Joseph street is the worst road I ever drove in, I have been in 3rd world countries that have better road conditions than this shitty ass city. I can hear my tires and suspension crying as I drive on it.

Sorry had to vent somehow.

Anything on the Ottawa-St Laurent POI has been out since this morning and still out now. So I think that's most of the island (Lowertown, Sandy Hill, Old Ottawa South), and Vanier, Gloucester, Rockcliffe, New Edinburgh, etc. Not sure the exact boundaries of it.

Parts of Toronto are out as well: https://support.teksavvy.com/posts/638911-cable-internet-outages/public

Definitely think Rogers is up to something. I'm kinda glad I didn't go with Teksavvy, all these outages would be driving me nuts.

The canal bridge is so goddamn beautiful at night.

The locks complete it.

I agree.

I think Ottawa, in general, is beautiful at night.

The architects for the proposed Richcraft high rise condos on the DOW Honda site released some new renders a couple days ago: http://www.gc-architects.com/highrise/carlingpreston.html#sthash.gz8UqaxX.NJDohk4r.dpbs

They look pretty stunning to be honest, I really hope this project comes through, I'd buy a unit in one of the two tallest towers :D

The only problem that I could foresee with living this close to the water, at least during the summer, is one that many people face who live near the canal in Ottawa: rats. It may not be as big a problem in high rise buildings, but I know it's one that most homes do face living near the water, moreso in the summer of course.

Yup! It was the only way we were going to ever be taken seriously, lol

Talking about Ottawa, anyone have any restaurant ideas for a holiday meet-up?
Just went to Habesha, an Ethiopian restaurant. It was really good! At least for the vegetarian platter we had, it compared very well to the Ethiopian food I've had in Toronto.

I also like Habesha (and Ethiopian food more generally). I'm not sure you could fit more than 6 or 7 people sitting down in there though!

How did the snowstorm go for everyone?

I worked from home today and had to go out to shovel twice ugh

The joys of living in Ottawa *sigh*

I take the bus to work and the commute was fine. Will be interesting to see how shovelling the driveway goes for the first time at my new house since the driveway has a few bumps in it. Was pretty much the only knock I had on the place when I bought it.

Looks like I'll be joining OttawaGAF soon, what do you guys suggest I should check out first?

Shawarma.

After that, if you like outdoorsy stuff head to Gatineau park. We have lots of amazing restaurants. Maybe walk some of the ethnically influenced neighborhoods like Chinatown and Little Italy. Depends on how old you are and what you like to do.

Or if you move to the burbs, I guess you could go to home depot? maybe a grocery store?

A lot of my friends that live and used to live in Ottawa have recommended the shawarma places and there seems like a lot of cool stuff to do there compared to my hometown of Guelph. I'll be going to the University of Ottawa starting January and I'd definitely be down for a meetup with you guys before the semester ends.

Sadly I don't drink. :(

1. Castle Schwarma is the shit, Palace fans are sadly misinformed
Sorry Exodus

2. Welcome to the best uni on the planet, what program are you in?

Also since the pre-xmas meetup probably won't happen, what about a January thing?

Also Stump no love for the Mayfair? Best theater in Ottawa by far.

Between Software Engineering and Computer Science I chose the latter. Friends and family are expecting me to transfer to Guelph in September, but overall it depends on how much I like it there.

Cheap Fresh Food: Ottawa Good Food Box. You pay $5, $10, $15, or $20 a month and get a large quantity of fresh fruit and vegetables and recipes to cook with. It's a not-for-profit that buys mostly off local farmers and uses economies of scale to pass savings onto you. Good way to try to eat healthy. There are pickup locations everywhere.

Why have you not told me about this sooner!? Totally going to try this.

I prefer Castle Shawarma. :p I really like their different garlic sauces.

Cool most of the comp sci people I know go to Carleton but UOttawa's a great school.

Just be sure not to call it OttawaU, you staying on campus?

I'll be living in Gatineau with a friend and his gf for a bit, but I definitely will be contacting residence because I feel like that living situation will be awkward.

The flag shawarma is a work of beauty

Living in Gatineau is cheaper (especially for beer) and transit is pretty good during peak hours, res is not particularly nice across the board but it's not terrible. Even if you don't drink someone will have to drag you to the terrifying underbelly known as Hull nightlife at least though, it's a uni right of passage

Ah, yes, another convert to uOttawa, the superior of Ottawa's two english universities.

There are probably high schools that offer a better education than Carleton, so it's not like uOttawa's superiority is something to really brag about. And I say that as a graduate of Carleton.

So are we doing a holiday meetup? Should I start planning something? =D

We should definitely aim for early January. Or, at earliest, that weekend between Christmas and New Year's.

Did anyone on GAF attend the Chaudiere Islands meeting last night?

This is probably the last chance this city gets to develop a good, fun waterfront so they better not fuck this up.

Nope. PoliSci! Of course, I graduated ten years ago, so it's entirely possible the improvements they keep bragging about aren't just advertising.

Carleton's engineering(and industrial design), Comp Sci and journalism are good... but that's about it :p

Oh ya! We didn't have to pay out of our noses for parking (though I checked recently and parking at Carleton is not as good as it used to be, no more free weekend parking is seriously lame).

No but I do have a knee jerk opinion on what they should do with the land.

And it isn't more brewpubs.

Let's hear it :p

And I definitely agree with your last line, if they decide to overload the islands with brew pubs, I'm moving to Toronto

JK...maybe

For real, they should move the museum of science and tech to there after imploding the St. Laurent one into non existence. Rename it museum of industry or something similar and have at it. I suppose parking might be an issue, but any major development there is gonna be handicapped in that aspect.

That or more taco stands.

Windmill wants to develop the land into an eco friendly zone, correct? So I wouldn't be surprised if cars were banned from the island altogether. Maybe they will have a sustainable transport to shuttle people to and from the island (like an electric tram for example).

Is anyone else kind of annoyed at the idea, headed up by that government appointed panel, that they raise the price of gas and/or the HST in Ontario to fix up Toronto's public transit?

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/life/P...+Toronto+cost+rest+Ontario/9280741/story.html

I know they said that people outside of Toronto won't be paying for fixing up Toronto's public transit, but I call bullshit on that....

Especially since the Ontario liberals have already proven that they have a double standard when it comes to Toronto(see the casino deal that was given to Ottawa vs the one that was given to Toronto for example).

Bane was better.
Just had the burger from Zydeco on Preston. One of the best burgers in the city. Don't pay attention to all these wannabe "gourmet" burger joints popping up everywhere.

While we're on the burger subject, when is Bacon Factory on Laurier West near Esplanade Laurier opening? They've been "opening soon" for like six months or more now.
