Infinite Warfare's MP is an embarrassing copy of Black Ops 3

*note: I'm not trying to bash on Infinite Warfare, I can definitely see people having fun with it, especially if they enjoy Black Ops 3.

I really want to believe that the old Infinity Ward (IW) is still around. I know Zampella and West left, but I was hoping a core team still existed at IW. After playing the beta, I feel that Activision really just merged Neversoft and the remaking ten people at IW and kept the name for brand value.

Since Infinite Warfare's (IWA) multiplayer reveal, we have known that it's copied all the mechanics of Black Ops 3 (Blops 3), plus some small new ideas.

Everything that Infinity Ward had built with MW3 and Ghosts is gone. Killstreaks, Specialists and Support streaks are now gone, along with creating your own soldier (to be fair this wasn't exactly that advanced and AW and Blops 3 let you customize). I liked that IW kept killstreaks, it kept each studio's COD's from feeling somewhat different and not a copy of the other.

It seemed like IW was trying hard to maintain Killstreaks, but AW and Blops really pushed forward with score streaks, and were probably pressured to change (my assumption, could be false). Along with that, they are copying the Pick-10 system (love it or hate it), which makes some diverse classes, but people running around with just a knife tend to get annoying after awhile.

Additionally, where I feel the biggest copy and paste of IWA is the gameplay. There are Rigs, which are pretty much Specialists with some small new features. Also, there is wall running and jet packs, which are almost identical to Black Ops 3's. The biggest offender to me about those, are that some of the maps don't feel like they're needed, with no place to wall-run or thrust. It literally feels like they checked off a box and added it in.

Activision must have saw some big market towards the futuristic setting. Back in 2013, everyone was talking about Titanfall and Destiny a lot, and Activision must have saw it as their next big thing. I'm surprised that Activision didn't have one of the studios work on a more modern or historical title just in case the futuristic setting fell back on them. Activision actually did this with Treyarch back in the day with World At War. Originally, Activision was nervous that the consumers wouldn't adapt to a modern fictional war, so they HD Treyarch make a WWII Call of Duty if Modern Warfare failed.

It's embarrassing how much was copied over from Black Ops 3 to Infinite Warfare. I hope that the excitement over the historical setting of Battlefield 1 catches Activision's attention.

Anyways, that's my rant. I played a couple rounds of the beta and it was a little fun, but nothing for me to spend hours on. I'm excited to play the campaign, but won't be touching the MP as jet packs and thrusters aren't the Call of Duty that I look for and IW is just uninspired.

it's crazy that the even kept small things like the yellow bar/font when you get a scorestreak. usually the games from the different developers would all have their own typefaces and stuff.

look at how Infinite Warfare uses the exact same typeface and yellow bar as Black Ops 3 for the "UAV READY" message. not only that, look at how similar the UIs are (forgive the bad quality of the screenshots, they're random screengrabs from youtube):
Black Ops 3:

Infinite Warfare:

now compare that to the three CoD games that came out before Black Ops 3. they all had similar placements, but they all used their own fonts, layout and style. not to mention that each of these 3 games had their own distinct mechanics and gameplay styles.
Black Ops 2:

Ghosts:

Advanced Warfare:

man, i miss the days when Treyarch and Infinity Ward's games felt different from each other. now it seems like the CoD games are even more interchangeable than they've ever have been.

THANK YOU for pointing this out. I knew I was forgetting something. When I saw that same font in the trailer I couldn't even believe it.

Without MWR attached, this SKU would be dead in the water.
Is Infinity Ward going to rely on remastered Modern Warfares as a sales crutch going forward? Looking forward to seeing MW2R in 3 years.

Surprised to see all the bad impressions about the beta. Let's see how this will affects the sales.. oh wait!. There is MW remaster!. Never mind.

Man, that's pretty damning.

It looks to similar in every aspect my guess they changed it because of the backlash they got from the reveal trailer..i think.

I really enjoyed BO3, its one of my GOTYs of last year and while I don't play much anymore I still pop in once a month to multiplayer nuk3town on weekends and enjoy playing.

The IW beta was just awful. Visually, it looks weird, with poor textures for a lot of stuff. The classes, at first glance, are all boring and too "robot-y". While BO3 won't be winning any writing awards, at least all the classes had some nice backstory. flair, and a look/vibe that made me partial to some. IW class selection screens are so lame in comparison.

I don't want to judge the maps too harshly right now, it does take time to learn maps, learn the corridors, choke points, hiding spots, sniper points, etc. First impressions are very poor though.

Movement also just feels "off", like it copied BO3 but its nowhere near as fluid. Again, maybe some time will help it.

I've seen some people say its different so you need to get used to it, hope thats true. Hype definitely deflated though. Its kind of funny how BF1 has become the game I am looking forward to the most after an awesome beta/early access, and Titanfall 2 and IW are both duds to me so far. Would not have expected that AT ALL early this year.

People love Treyarch games so i´m not surprised IW is trying to be similar but it is still different.

Black Ops 3 is much more fun to play than IW.

Well they said in terms of movement that they didn't want to change it dramatically for a third year in a row. Which is why they kept the same movement system (although it doesn't feel as floaty as BO3's.)

I have to imagine they tried to emulate more of BO3 because for the most part, BO3's MP was very much liked. Personally the more I play IW, the more I like it the movement over BO3's.

It really is the most similar two successive COD games have been, it's crazy. I wouldn't mind so much except for the fact that I think it's not nearly as good as Black Ops 3 is.

Infinity Ward is a shell of its former self. Only CoD games worth buying are the ones by Treyarch. Blacks Ops actually feels like a triple A shooter.

OP you are very lttp. respawn took anyone of value from IW years ago and simply kept the name for brand value as you suggested. This was obvious with Ghosts.

I haven't played a COD game for a little while now. I would jump in and test them out but the games still seem to hold their value to make a second hand purchase expensive.

Hopefully this will bomb so I can justify the purchase of a cheap second hand copy!

Chances slim.

Funny how it went three studio rotation but we're getting the "same" (hyperbolic but still) game twice. I too enjoyed the fact that IW and Treyarch had their own approaches to MP. I'm hoping Sledgehammer Games keeps their own identity for next year's game.

This might be the first year that my brother or I won't be picking up a COD game on release.

While this is true, at least it was uniquely IW's ideas. Now they're just copying ideas/concepts from other COD studios. It's like the exact opposite of how IW of old operated with their refusal to do Zombies mode etc.

not defending Ghosts at all (wasn't a fan + fuck those terrible maps), but at least that game had it's own mechanics/identity when compared to Black Ops 2.

So $70 for a rehash multiplayer and an unwanted single player campaign, with people buying just for the remastered multiplayer? Bizzare.

That definitely looks like BO3. Glad I already own that.

I still need to check out the beta, but once they showed off the multiplayer footage my interest dropped hard. First they cut Extinction for yet another year of zombies, now the multiplayer is basically Black Ops 3 again. I liked Black Ops 3, but I was hoping for something different both in terms of PvE and PvP. I get the feeling that Activision is trying to consolidate each of the CoD subseries so that they can offer a similar package every year (singleplayer + zombies + multiplayer), but I don't want to play the same CoD every year.

Infinite Warfare's singleplayer looks really damn good though.

I didn't even like Black Ops 3.

The Titanfall system of movement just doesn't work well on narrow COD maps (in my opinion). It made sense in Titanfall because of that game's general premise, but in the case of COD, it feels out of place and unnecessary.

"Unwanted single player" what? The single player looks great. There's also zombies, which some people like a lot.

Yeah after watching some videos on the beta I was pretty surprised to how similar it was to BO3.

Makes the whole 3 studio cycle kinda redundant since they're basically all making the same game. Hopefully Sledgehammer comes in with something original and new but I'm not holding my breath.

How is the Single Player Unwanted? If anything I'd argue that IW has put most of their effort into the SP in comparison.

I don't know who Infinite Warfare is supposed to appeal to. The mechanics are ripped straight from Blops 3, but are somehow executed worse (wallrunning, etc). Rigs are specialists with zero personality, and the ttk is laughably low. Spawns are also quite bad on certain maps (Throwback ugh). Weapon varients with perks like infinite damage range are just lol. I don't see who would play when Blops 3 already offers a very similar, but overall better experience.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna be cancelling my pre-order on this. I'll complete the early access MW:R campaign and then just wait for a major price drop if a MW:R standalone doesn't come out. It's definitely not worth the £60 I'm gonna spend on it.

Frankly, I'm kinda disappointed that IW includes Zombies. It was always Treyarch's mode for me and the co-op modes were one of defining features of each studios' entries. Sad to see that.

Sledgehammer Games, please keep your exo movements in your games, and don't copy the bad movements from Black Ops 3 and Infinite Warfare.

And make the servers on the PC version good, last CoD that had decent PC servers was Treyarch's Black Ops 2.

I saw this coming with the reveal trailer, the robots and helmets looking so similar to BO3. Then the multiplayer showed how derivative it is, all the way down to the fonts. This is the most identical the engine has ever looked across two games. There were rumors earlier this year that there would be a second year of content for Black Ops 3, I wonder if this is it and they decided to ship it under the IW name instead. I wish someone in the press could investigate this for a long form article because there's probably a great story behind this, something is off about the way Infinity Ward has approached this project after Ghosts.

I got burned so hard buying BO3 digitally last year. The overall design was so simplified and repetitive and I had latency/network issues that made it unplayable with the latency on an HDTV. There's no way I could stomach this again and I feel bad for infinity ward that they're paying the price for what was probably a top down corporate mandate.

It's too similar. I got bored with Blops 3 after playing it pretty steady for about 4-5 months, so I haven't played it in about 5 months.

I was almost immediately bored when I jumped into the IW Beta. It doesn't help that some things have changed for the worse. Bringing back aim assist to OHK sniper rifles makes this game unplayable for me.

Yeah, I agree. I'm also just tired of COD zombies, I haven't really enjoyed it since the first Black Ops. I'd much prefer Spec Ops missions or even more of that Extinction mode from Ghosts. Who knows though, maybe IW's take on Zombies could be different?
lol

A series known to have ignored SP?

What are you talking about? They always go big with their marketing for the SP.

But the single player itself is mediocre. It's played all SP except Ghosts, and its just been mediocre SP.

I hope the new one is to the standard that the marketing campaign portays it as.

That and I'm still bitter about how bad Block Ops 3 SP is.

I started to get a feel for it after a few games last night, but it is the first CoD I have no interest in at all. As others have said, it's crazy how similar it is to Black Ops 3. It's like both studios set out to make the same game and are putting out their version.

A lot of things in it feel good and polished, but it still ends up feeling like a colder, more generic version of BO3.

I'm gonna pass on it and hope there's an independent release of MW later on.

whats worse is the characters are all mindless robots.....no fucking personality or anything. Just thrown in there for the sake of having different bots to have different skills. It seems like anything Treyarch does they copy.

Pick 10.....Treyarch did it

Wall running....Treyarch did it

UI apparently....treyarch did it lol

Special abilities on characters Treyarch did it

It's basically a fucking checklist at this point.....nothing is being well done. The maps don't even need wall running from what the beta showed......the walls runs feel like someone said we need some places to run on after the map design was already done and they just took out a couple walls or added a random one to check the box off.

Advanced Warfare added jump packs.....but god it didn't even feel like a CoD due to how crap the maps were, the spawns being the worst in the series right next to ghosts and how fast the movement was.

It was so frikin bad. After waiting for hours for the beta to actually start working, when I actually did get into some matches the game was just bad. It was just a crappier version of BO3 made by a team who seems to have very little identity of its own now.

I feel a little dirty inside for buying the legacy edition of this game and giving them money for this hackjob of a game just to play MW1. But I've been craving a boots on the ground FPS for so long now that I just can't pass up MW1.

Oh yeah! They're even copying Zombies even though I swear for years IW refused to do Zombies because they didn't want to copy and have their own identity.

Hmmmm.

Oh and yes, I'm aware IW formed Respawn and took most of the team with them years ago. I just always thought there were still some key memebers left at IW.
