You can see them as

clones being created/transported to different time zones in the secret warp room in Crash 3/Warped.

Really neat stuff.

I figured that was a Crash 3 only thing.

It seems that the assistants in Crash 1 and 2 were working for Brio. Since Brio isn't around in Crash 3 Cortex needed to make some robot assistants.

Knowing the origin story of Goomba-tier grunt enemies now prevents your enjoyment of a video game? Sure, whatever. I'll be sure to be careful about those animals inside the robots when Sonic Mania comes out. /s

They always creeped me out a little as a kid, especially their scream when you kill them. It's not the Wilhelm scream, it's the other stock scream sound.

Stealth probably. It'd be pretty easy to infiltrate a base if you were just a random frog.
