I have a weird feeling it won't be translated in Multi 5 and it's going to suck >.<
The website still say "French title to be determined" which is not a good look one month before release.

Small update on the SCRAP adventure:

It's already live online, there will be puzzles and hints in multiple languages and solving them all will be done via the "TRANSLAYTON-System".

One reward available on 3DS/iOS/Android will be a nightgown and interior decoration inspired by Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy:

New Interview with Akihiro Hino about the game

Would you describe this game as something of a soft reboot?

Hino-san: Yeah. It is a new start, a new journey for the series.

Do you have any plans in mind, then, for more games starring Kat? Another trilogy, perhaps?

Hino-san: We are trying to do this series with the Mystery Journey tag again, but we're not really sure if Kat's going to be the main protagonist on the next one. It might be someone new again. But this Mystery Journey series will definitely continue from here. We haven't decided exactly where, though, so we can't say too much on that front.
Why did you choose to release this on 3DS and not the Switch?

Hino-san: The reason why we chose the 3DS is because there's a large Layton fanbase on 3DS given that we've released other Layton titles for the platform. We wanted to cater to that original fanbase that we already have and has been with us for a long time. Also, we are releasing it for smartphones. The reason why we didn't bring it to Switch is because we hadn't started development for the Switch at the time that we were actively working on this game. For the future, we'll look into maybe porting it to Switch and making the next game in the series on the Switch.

I really don't get the marketing behind this game...why no WW launch on 3DS since it is translated ? Why would people wait several months to get the game if it is avaible and cheaper on their phones (except core gamers but Layton is a series with a broad appeal, at least in France)

Thanks for posting this tako! Interesting to know they will potentially change protags for the next entry. Still hope for now-aged Professor Luke! (Ah, unless any non-OG trilogy games rule out that possibility, in which case, please don't tell me, haha.) Also good to know a Switch port is possible.

kind of surprised NOA isnt doing anything for this game? level 5 going solo or an odd fall out?

they had a "Hidden" layton themed cafe for e3, and now the online game out to follow... it just feels very niche considering all the flub that used to be given to layton games

New 6 page Famitsu article with some new mini-game tidbits:

- There will be one new daily puzzle for the whole first year after release

- One mini-game called "Bumpy Labyrinth" stars Kat's talking dog Sherl. You have to avoid all kinds of obstacles and navigate him through mazes within a limited number of moves. Sherl follows arrows on the floor and the game looks a bit like the Toy Robot mini-game from L5 with a focus on different heights and properties of the obstacles.

- Another mini-game is the previously detailed "Perfect Dinner" where you have to select the ideal full course dinner for people by finding out more about them during the story.

- The last mini-game from the article is called "Accessory Shop". You're in charge of product placement for a store that sells jewellery and other accessories. You have to place a number of items on store shelves according to the preferences of your customers. They have a specific purchase in mind and it's your goal to get them to also buy other items by placing them on the way to their desired goods. Shelf space is limited and it's your goal to sell everything in one go.

Yup, I thought this might be why they changed "Lady Layton" to this pretty bland name; As a back-up plan in case people don't like Kat and co. as much as the old cast. Kat already looks like a likeable, capable successor to Professor Layton imo and I hope she gets a second game if Mystery Journey is good.

But I wouldn't say no to your Professor Luke idea either :)

Glixel Interview with Akihiro Hino:
Level-5's Akihiro Hino on the Success of 'Layton' and Learning from Ghibli

Famitsu Review: 34/40

Release: July 20th
Price: 4800 Yen including tax
Genre: Adventure
Age Recommendation: 12+
Target Audience: Fans of the Layton series, Players who like puzzle solving
Average Playtime: None given; you should focus on the joy of solving puzzles and don't fret over how long it takes you to complete the game

Reviewer 1: [9/10]
Despite an all-new cast, this follow-up to the older Layton games is a full-fledged new entry in the series. It's just as enjoyable to play as the old games with controls that are largely unchanged. The game is packed with content: In addition to the main story, there are mini-games, collecting hint-coins, dress-up, room decoration and more. You'll be able to have fun with the game for a long time since the daily puzzles are back as well.
Reviewer 2: [9/10]
The core gameplay is still the same, you enjoy a story while solving puzzles just like in previous games. But with the change of protagonist comes a new structure where you're tasked with solving a number of different cases. This gives the game a fresh feeling; Same goes for the option of changing Kat's outfit. The story is helped tremendously by animated cutscene that brake up the game from time to time. The story leads you along with an easy to follow plot and varied performances (by the characters and their voice actors), just like you've come to expect from the series. The London atmosphere and the music that accompanies it are also done exceptionally well.
Reviewer 3: [8/10]
The main character is female this time and systems like the interior decoration and changing of clothes have been added so the games offers lots of variety. The story centres on three distinctly different characters and it will make you laugh with their banter. It reaches the quality of a serialised TV anime. There are a large number of different puzzles to solve including math, but the game might be a bit on the easy side with its difficulty. New to the series are a deduction mode during the cases and puzzles that accompany it.

Reviewer 4: [8/10]
The feeling of playing a fairy-tale is alive and well in this iteration of the series. The way in which the characters you meet in the story, their mannerisms and the conversations you'll have with them are depicted is better than ever before. The game is well-paced and it will hook you with a gradually unfolding story, new puzzles and a variety of content that are added over time. The game has an easy control system that's mainly focused on touch controls, but in practice it can sometimes feel like the controls are getting a bit in your way.

Famitsu also had a write-up of Episode 3 and short teases for Episodes 4-9, but Gematsu will probably post a translated version soon.

This is probably my last bump before the game comes out, we're only one week away from a new Layton game everyone :)

edit:

The review score is in line with the most recent Layton games, for comparison:

Miracle Mask 32/40

Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney 35/40

Azran Legacies 32/40

Translated version of the Episode 3 preview from Famitsu

laytons-mystery-journovufo.jpg

Gematsu said:
In “Episode 03,” an incident occurs at a movie screening where the millionaires of London such as Mayor Fremens and Clerk Gospec have gathered.

The movie being shown at the screening is a spectacle called “Submarine Attack of Love.” Its synopsis is as follows: “A number of incidents occur in a luxurious passenger boat boarded by two lovers. At the climax, the pair are in a desperate situation as their boat is sinking. However, it is at that time that their boat suddenly transforms into a submarine. Then they both confirm their love for each other and romantically kiss.” Many spectators came to the venue to get a glimpse of the “kiss scene on the most romantic deck” that everyone is talking about.

But in the movie that was screened, the ending came without a kiss scene. Katrielle, who was visiting the venue, will seek out the criminal who cut and “stole” the kiss scene.

Thanks for your posts in here, takoyaki! They've made for some great reads, it's much appreciated.

New MCVUK interview with Level-5's director of games marketing Lucy Pozniak. some excerpts courtesy of GoNintendo below:

On the game's size

“We have a new hero, [Layton’s daughter] Katrielle, who’s opening up her detective agency. In addition, whereas previous titles have had bigger, more overarching story puzzles or a main mystery to solve, this one is broken into 12 chapters and it’s about solving different mysteries within those chapters.”

On supporting 3DS

“Whether you play it on Android, iOS or 3DS, it doesn’t matter, you’re going to have the same experience. What we’ve done is that we’ve made sure there’s absolutely no disparity between the players, so everyone is getting the same content and the same story. Even with pricing and everything else, we’re very confident about how the fans will perceive it.

We’re not just going to go with mobile like everyone else has gone with mobile and leave the 3DS or the console player behind. The key for us is to make sure we have the same integrity, the same kind of fan experience across all platforms. Mobile just gives us an opportunity now to really reach out to a bigger mass audience, because [before] we were limited to a very [particular kind of ] DS or 3DS title. So now we have the opportunity to talk to more people and find out what really works best for each platform.”

On considering bringing the game to Switch

“We’ve looked at [Switch]. There are some challenges that we fully understand at this time. One of the things we understand is that the Switch has a portability factor, which is really good for this title. However, the challenge for us is the fact that once you dock your system it’s no longer a handheld, so it’s just understanding that [particular issue].

In addition, we know there are so many 3DS owners who have played Layton previously, so we want to make sure those people who already have devices in their hands have something to play. So specifically the design at this time is for 3DS, so those players can play some more, and for new players who don’t have a 3DS system, that’s why we’ve co-developed for smartphones, so they can jump on this time. But in the future, we’re definitely looking into adapting for the Switch. We love the Switch and we’re trying to put as much on there as we can, but right now, this title is for 3DS and smart devices only.”

There's two other points in the interview worth noting. So far, the Layton series has managed to move 16 million units worldwide. On top of that, Layton's Mystery Journey will have “certain in-app purchases” .for mobile users and a “fuller package” for 3DS
