Madonna's MDNA |OT| Her exquisite oyster display and reductive garnishing

I feel like most of Madonna's songs would resonate with me more if a better vocalist was singing them. Girl Gone Wild is pretty decent but her voice is so painfully second-rate that it takes away from the heat of the song. Hell, even Britney could have done cooler things with the sound of the track with her "my-hymen-just-busted" groan of a voice.

Confessions was a wonderfully produced album but the only thing that held me back was her boringly monotone voice. Just doesn't sound good in my ears. Well that and some of the lyrics. I can't listen to that New York song without feeling awkward. That said, her voice sounds great in Masterpiece, which is why it's the only song on the album I might be listening to a week or two down the road.

The wait for Gaga's next album will be long :(

yeah, i do think the weakness of madonna's vocals is holding her back on some of these, even gang bang

the 'DRIVE BITCH' bit hovers somewhere between badass and ridiculous

[edit]as for gaga, i think that she should stick to 8-tracks and release them yearly
the fame monster was pretty close to a perfect pop album

Yeah, I agree. I think there is too much filler on both Born This Way and The Fame.

The end of Gang Bang really killed it for me =(

i think i'm addicted is the best track on MDNA precisely because the production is perfect and mental and because it doesn't really rely on a strong vocal (though i do also think the vocal is one of the strongest on the album)

Where do you see stuff like this? I never got a decent source for the "number 1 in 51 countries" pre-order news either.

Last night when I went to bed it was at 17, this morning when I opened iTunes it said it was #1. I don't know how to check for other countries tho. People were tweeting last night it was #1 in their country too *shrugs*

#BuyBornThisWayTomorrow is trending, heh.

Listening to most of this on the train ride this morning...was really excited and pre-ordered the album and everything.

...kind of let down. There aren't nearly as many club-bangers as I thought there would be, and I'm not exactly jumping out of my chair to most of these beats.

Bah. I'll keep listening to see how it holds up to repeated hearings, but so far I'm actually really luke-warm on it and I wanted to be blown away.

For me, it got worse after a few play-throughs... and it wasn't so hot to begin with.

I don't care for the production on any of it, the lyrics are some of the worst of her career (half the songs consist of a few limp phrases unceremoniously plopped alongside a flat, forgettable chorus) and I can't get past how desperate the album comes off. Regardless of all the who-did-it-first chatter and supposed callbacks to earlier songs, there's simply nothing here that I get enjoyment from listening to. I'm sticking with my five vinyls -- would like it to be seven, but Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light are so damn expensive and hard to find! -- and officially backdating my Madge fandom to end with the '90s.

Grr...yeah. Just went through and rated everything after my second playthrough. Only Girls Gone Wild netted a 4 star along with the previous Gimmie All Your Love single. The rest of the album is 2-3 star songs for me.

Blah :( I'm really hearing the suffering vocals that some of you reference now.

I guess this album just isn't for me, seems like some of her fans definitely like it a lot.

Pitchfork scalps Madonna:

Madonna's 12th studio album is the product of both a merger and a divorce, but as much as the singer attempts to milk the latter event for pathos over the course of its 16 tracks, the tone is mostly set by corporate dealmaking. MDNA is the star's first record as part of a $120 million deal with concert promotion juggernaut Live Nation and a separate three-album pact with Interscope, and like a lot of new records by artists of her stature, it's essentially a mechanism to promote a world tour that will inevitably drastically out-earn the profits from her new music. These sort of records don't need to be cynical or uninspired on an artistic level, but this one feels particularly hollow, the dead-eyed result of obligations, deadlines, and hedged bets.

Madonna has made her share of bad music in the past, but for the most part, her failures have come from taking artistic chances that didn't pay off, as on her experiments with hip-hop on American Life and Hard Candy. Large chunks of MDNA are shockingly banal, coming across not so much as bad pop songs per se, but as drably competent tunes better suited to D-list Madonna wannabes. The worst of these numbers were produced by French DJ Martin Solveig, whose anonymous, unimaginative arrangements for "Turn Up the Radio", "Give Me All Your Luvin'", "I Don't Give A", and "B-Day Song" are paired with excessively bland lyrics. The latter track, a collaboration with M.I.A., is horrifically regressive, the sound of two of pop's great feminist provocateurs joining forces for what amounts to a tacky children's song about birthday parties spiced up with a couple of tired double entendres. (Sorry ladies, Rihanna beat you to that frosting-licking line.)

Madonna's tracks with house duo the Benassi Bros. and William Orbit, the principal architect of her 1998 album Ray of Light, are much better, if not up to par with previous career highlights. "I'm Addicted", a dynamic electro throbber by the Benassis, is the big keeper here, and their work on "Girl Gone Wild" yields a reasonably strong single that rises to the challenge of competing with Ke$ha, Britney Spears, and Katy Perry on pop radio. The Orbit collaborations mainly call back to their work together on Ray, the record that essentially established the aesthetics of the singer's past decade of music. "I'm a Sinner" is a serviceable rewrite of their Ray-era soundtrack hit "Beautiful Stranger", and "Falling Free" plays to her strengths as a singer of ballads, though it lacks the generous hooks of, say, "Take a Bow" or "Live to Tell".

The most interesting of the Orbit productions is "Gang Bang", a campy revenge fantasy that essentially uses her filmmaker ex-husband Guy Ritchie's sub-Tarantino aesthetic as a weapon against him. The title suggests porn, but it's really a nod to mobsters, particularly as her over-the-top, Ana Matronic-esque monologue turns especially violent and bloody. It's the album's boldest, most experimental track, and it's marred only by a just-off vocal performance that renders her very familiar voice a bit anonymous, and a half-hearted attempt at a dubstep bass drop. (Next time just hire Skrillex, okay?)

Madonna reckons with her divorce from Ritchie elsewhere on the record, but her attempts to address lingering bitterness and affection for her ex are so remote that the songs have all the soul of a carefully edited press release. "Love Spent", an Orbit production with brittle electro-acoustic accompaniment, at least approaches the topic from an interesting angle, focusing on the tension and power dynamic of a relationship in which one half of the couple drastically out-earns the other. The song picks up steam as it goes along, but it ultimately comes out like a tepid, ponderous rework of her 2005 smash "Hung Up". "I Don't Give A" starts off strong with her spitting out the lines, "Wake up, ex-wife/ This is your life," in a robotic rap, but she is upstaged by guest Nicki Minaj, who turns in an entertaining performance that is nevertheless below the standards of her usual features.

It's almost impossible to approach MDNA without some degree of cynicism, but it's equally difficult to imagine anyone being more cynical about this music than Madonna herself. Unlike previous late-period records in which she had the luxury to indulge in creative tangents and not get too hung up on scoring several hits, MDNA is a record that comes with major commercial expectations. The "this has to work" factor is high, and it's hard to shake the impression that she has some measure of contempt for the contemporary pop audience. We all know that Madonna is an extremely intelligent woman-- even if she's never been known for penning great lyrics, it's easier to take the mesmerizingly dumb lyrics of tracks like "Superstar" and "B-Day Song" as spiteful trolling rather than vapid pandering. It doesn't really matter whether or not this drivel is insulting to Madonna's audience-- the most loyal fans seem to embrace being submissive to her domineering persona-- but it is disheartening when one of the most influential pop artists of the 20th century is tossing out the world's umpteen-millionth "Mickey" retread as a lead single. She's the one who deserves better.

they're right about b-day song, that thing is fucking atrocious

i'm actually a bit disappointed in MIA for helping to birth it

Pre-Orders were #1 in 52 countries. You can like, google it.
I did google it at the time, extensively. And the only results I got were forum posts, just like there were people here saying "numbers one in 52 countries: here's the list".

Never was there a source, and I couldn't (and still can't) find numbers for pre-orders on itunes, which made me lead to believe you can only see it if you have iTunes installed. Which I don't have.

As much as I love M.I.A. - and I do love her - I find her to be just god-fucking-awful when she's not doing her thing. She really needs to avoid features and collaborations.

Anyway, listening to the album on Spotify, and I agree that it's a bit disappointing. I agree with the Pitchfork review. These tracks are all too basic for an artist of Madonna's caliber.
Something I said about the project back when "Give Me All Your Luvin'" first dropped still rings true to me: a better album than Hard Candy to be sure, but at best most of these tracks are inoffensive, which is just about the worst thing you could say about an artist who built her brand on being provocative and cutting-edge.

My standout tracks are I'm Addicted and Gang Bang - although Gang Bang loses a few points for that godawful dubstep breakdown that comes this close to killing the whole fucking song for me.

I'm Addicted, however, is just fucking brilliant and slays the rest of this album on its own.

Honorable Mention: Masterpiece. Really takes me back to classic Madonna balladry, even if doesn't fully capture the magic.

That rosetta cover makes it sound like generic euro shit.

it probably already was; but it was madonna.

so

yeah

I like the second half of the album more starting from masterpiece. beautiful killer and I fucked up are the best tracks.

a lot of the earlier stuff; is kind of ... generic. GangBang is kind of awful and the bit at the end ruins it.
I like the MDNAMDNA bit in I'm addicted but that's it
superstar, some girls, turn up the radio are going to be deleted off the iphone soon.

birthday song and best friend (gwyneth? LOL) sucks balls.

Points to Pitchfork for focusing on the music. That bit about people who enjoy the album being subservients to a trolling Madonna is a tad too much. Also the score doesn't match the review.

Why do people give Madonna credit when she do not even write her songs. She is a completely sub-par singer too, the only thing she got going is her style and image.

Gang Bang is seriously a bad song. The production is edgy and good but the actual song is terrible.

Honestly, Like A Prayer, Into The Groove, Rain and Cherish are good songs. Truly good stuff, however, i am not at all impressed by MDNA.

Damn, Cherish is an awesome song.

Actually, people like Patrick Leonard, i find very fascinating. What went through his brain when he wrote such a genius melody as Like A Prayer. Or say Ben Margulies writing Someday by Mariah Carey. Such a ridiculously great pop songs, i mean where do you even start?!

Did Leonard write all the synth bases to all his songs too? They are super good!!!!!!!

I love that sound, just like Just Good Friends, my favorite MJ song.

Eh, that criticism could be applied to just about all of the female pop stars in the business. None of them are singer songwriters pur sang.

That having said, I do agree with the notion that producers deserve more recognition for their work on albums. When I think of Britney Spears, I think of Danja, Dr Luke, and Bloodshy & Avant. When I think of Lady Gaga, I think of Red One. When I think of Madonna's recent great music, I think of Stewart Price and William Orbit.

I've had this discussion before with gaffers, but I think that the influence of the singer is often overstated compared to that of the producers.

When it comes to MDNA, I don't know who to give credit to. Definitely not Solveig. His work on this album is just mediocre. Benassi gave us the amazing I'm Addicted, but also the generic Girl Gone Wild. Orbit gave us Love Spent, but all the others songs he's worked on are rather meh. However, if there's one constant in Orbit's work, it's that none of his songs are really bad. Some Girls, Love Spent, I'm a Sinner, Masterpiece, Falling Free... at worst they're sort of bland, but the crimes against humanity on this album are not his fault.

If you read some interviews with Orbit, Pettibone, Leonard, Mirwais, etc, they give a lot of credit to Madonna in the writing and producing of her albums, she's just not very upfront about it.

I think it was Papa Don't Preach in which she received a writing credit for adding ONE WORD. lol.

And you have a K-pop avatar....

Decided I will check this album out. Whenever I start thinking about Madonna, I think about "Bedtime Story". What a fascinating video, the visual aesthetic is beyond what any pop artist did, or is doing still. I think it's a catchy tune as well. Without getting to over-indulgent, Madonna has always been, to me, a pop artist pushing the boundaries visually.

She looks so fucking good for her age too. Damn.

Katy Perry IS hot.

Wait, are you're being serious? It's (arguably) the warmest, sexiest thing she's done and at least a third of the tracks are absolute essentials in her catalog as a whole.

I don't know, there is a lot of shit in there aside from the singles. My favourite song is probably Inside of Me. Silky smooth.
