War Thunder |OT| Tanks, Planes And Automobiles

What's a good package to buy for this game? Starting out on PS4 an don't mind buying a "full game" in a sense.

Also I'm really only seeing two maps in the base game (in Arcade mode) is that correct? In Entak video's I'm seeing snow maps.

Play for free for a while to make sure you know what you're in for, that's the best advice I can suggest. All of the premium planes/tanks are available for "try run", so you should be able to see if it's right for you.

As for maps: there are BR (battle rating) limits for some maps, you'll get more after you have more planes. The randomizer also works strangely sometimes: you can play on one map for several hours.

Ground Forces (tanks) right now have a limited amount of maps. But there are about two dozen air maps in rotation it feels like. They just added some new ones in the last patch. You'll see certain maps at higher BRs (levels) and vice versa.

I wish they'd let us choose the mode again. I'd play nothing but domination.

While I love the sturm mode (or what's it called in English version?) lately it's nothing but bomberfest with everybody trying to get as much rp/money as they can bombing out the bases. I suspect that lot of people do that for their tank crew experience.

In all the gameplay features of WT the one about single crew with single experience pool to be used for both tanks and planes seems to be the most stupid and incomprehensible.

Bombing is ludicrously profitable and easy. I can make as much money with my B17s as I can my Dora D-13. The B17G gives a 140% reward. Why? Why isn't it just 100%?

It's the Yer plague all over again, except now the bombers have guns. Ground Strike is pretty unplayable if you draw more than 4 or 5 dedicated bombers. It's just a shame. Gaijin has taken zero steps to address this.

It helps sell premium vehicles, which is all Gaijin really cares about. Only a few of the crew skills are working for tanks right now anyways.

Ok, i was playing with a friend whose a little behind me on progress so I was putting planes on holiday to make sure we were in level 1 matches, and I kept seeing other people using A20s...but even with my 3 reserve planes and 1 A20, I was getting placed into lvl 2 games...what are these people doing that Im not??

would having only 2 reserve planes help??

where A = BR of the “top rated aircraft”, B and C = BR of the two aircraft following it with a difference of not more than 0.6 BR.

BR stands for Battle Rating (you can see it on plane information pop-up). They also somehow secretly adjust BR with your performance, so you should lose a few battles perharps. :)

30% bonus research this weekend.

If they nerf bombing I think many people will just quit. No one is interested to be ace's food with little reward every game.

ah...I guess my 2.3 A20 was causing it to not count my 1.0 peashooters based on the .6 differential limit then...maybe.

So Id be better off having more 1.7s than 1.0s to get into a lower tier fight which is weird.

Take a 2.0 and a 1.7 with the A20. your effective BR will be 2.0

They don't move players upward for performing well (or so they say) but you can be moved down from 2.0 if you lose a bunch of games in a row.

If your friend is just in biplanes then play those with him.

I think the idea is the BR spread of your top 3 planes should be no more than 0.7. Running something like 2.3 + 1.0 + 1.0 will put you in the same box as 2.3 + 1.7 + 1.7.

To get into intro battle (Foggy Albian / Stalingrad) I think your weighted BR needs to be <= 1.3 or 1.7.

I just let my daughter (shes 5) mess around in test flight...i walk away for 2 minutes and when I get back all my complementary golden eagles are gone...she converted them for accelerated research towards the F4F...fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

I was hoping she just upgraded a crew rank or whatever by mistake

oh well...maybe she's just into naval fight bombers lol

About domination?

1) Do you actually need to slow down/stop on the runway?
2) How does the game consider you are capturing? One instance is my plane landed but the capture counter didn't start until I almost ran out of the runway.
3) Any tip on landing? My propeller kept getting destroyed when trying to land monoplane. My biplane kept bouncing, and I simply destroy the landing gear on any two engine planes.

One thing I found good for noob is never rush into a sea of enemy planes near airport. Just circle somewhere a bit further and pick up those who chase your teammate and isolate themselves.

1. No, but you need to touch runway long enough. Usually it requires slowing down.

2. Some maps have additional requirements. Domination Britain the point can only be taken by ground forces. Also if there's enemy ground unit "holding" the point you won't be able to capture it (Mozdok is perfect example).

3. Flaps & "scissors" & air brakes (if you have them). Most of the planes in arcade land rather easily if speed is less than 250kph. "Scissors" is the trick when you turn your plane left to right to left etc. in quick succession, so that you lose speed on every such turn. Also remember that you have wheel brakes (right stick down on default controls).

Had a great day yesterday

Shot down 4 planes and kept my first plane in the fight for the whole match but botched my landing in the Airfield lol

Love the dogfighting in this game

last night I attacked a catalina with a catalina...my front gunner was slowly picking him apart and then we dove to the tree tops (from 3000m in the whales!) and just as he start to smoke a teammate clips my wing...smh

This game is so much fun. I swoop in on his guy and he immediately hits the brakes so I pass him and hes right on my 6. I take it to the trees, roll over a mountain while clipping trees, and land in a field with trees but didnt hit one and managed to do a 180 at the end and was still able to take off.

Its amazing how bad brakes are when youre landing in a field, that was a loong slide.

My best battle is 5 kill 3 assist 0 death in an arcade domination, with a F4F.

American plane feels good as they have more guns and ammo (good for me who can't aim).

Altitude and airspeed are your weapons, once you learn to keep up your airspeed/altitude and when to dump speed for altitude and vice versa you start doing vastly much better.

You win by carefully picking fights where you can hit the enemy without dumping all your speed and altutide, if you are turning circles at low altitude you should consider your plane already forfeit even if you win the turning battle vs your current enemy.

This is called energy fighting.
altitude = potential energy
airspeed= kinetic energy

You can trade one for the other at will (but it's not a lossless conversion), if you run out of both you are dead as you are a sitting duck. As long as you have more energy than the planes you are fighting against you have a large advantage over them.

Your engine (especially on lower tier planes) can build energy very slowly (as long as you're not at or near your maximum airspeed, then you will lose airspeed faster than your engine can build it).
It is up to you to use your energy as a resource to fight without running low unless it's absolutely neccesary.

This guy (even though he mumbles and has an accent) has amazing guides on the topic of energy fighting, boom and zoom tactics and has videos for each plane and type of plane (fighter, bombers, heavy bombers etc) for each nation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCamYCPolDw

Once you understand the basic principles of energy fighting a whole new learning curve and world of possibilities and experimenting opens up to you.

After that it becomes a matter of knowing the strenghts and weaknesses and understanding the playstyle of each plane (are they better at climbing than you, do they want to boom and zoom, can you outrun them, can you outrun them if you climb? can you outturn them?) .
Alongside that you will do better by learning the weaknesses of each plane (e.g does the plane have thick armor in the rear making it a better idea to shoot its engines) as well as the deadzones for their gunners (especially in the case of bombers)

The weaknesses/playstyles/armor thickness concepts are no different from what you'd learn in a game like world of tanks so they should not intimidate you. You learn this shit while flying the planes yourself as time goes on.

The concept of energy fighting is the biggest thing that will be very alien to people not used to playing combat flight sims/games but it is not hard to grasp and will turn your flying games from endless senseless turning battles to highly entertaining and highly varied gameplay.

Find a playstyle you enjoy and go from there.
e.g pure energy fighter or maybe boom and zoom (dive bombing and diving on enemy fighters steeply then NOT slowing down and turning but climbing back to altitude asap to have another go) or being a sneaky bomber going after the objectives or a flying fortress fighting it out with enemy heavy fighters

This game has a ton of depth, atmosphere in spades due to the awesome graphics and tons of variety.

The last thing I want to say is that the game requires patience to play properly, you can't just fly headfirst into the swarm and start turning , die respawn and start over.
It's as much about energy , positioning , picking the right targets at the right time and escorting bombers/playing objectives as it is about 420 MLG noscope shootbanging at other planes.

I can't talk about the tank mode as I've only spent a few hours with it and it didn't click with me (I played world of tanks for years though)

Although I know of these concepts, I wouldn't be effective right away either. Fantastic post.

Anybody had any success getting any flight sticks to work in PS4? Waiting on that before investing any cash

.

Well they definitely work. I have an old Logitech 3D Pro flight stick that I plugged in and was able to map most of what I wanted. The problems I ran into were that the game really wanted to invert the throttle axis, but I've run into that in PC games, and my flight stick was old and wouldn't fully register a turn to the right, and I couldn't find a way of calibrating that in War Thunder (although after fiddling with the DS4 controls it's probably possible).

Chances are any USB HID input device will work, but feel free to wait for someone with the specific flight stick you're looking at to speak up.

Discounts on American bombers, crew training, and ace crews? What a thinly veiled cash grab. Gaijin knows the current tier 4+ metagame is broken so they're going to milk it for what it's worth before nerfing things into the ground. Or just keep it the way it is and keep making money...

On my research tab, the F6F is shown as "-30%" and cost 11000 research point. Isn't that always the cost?

Yeah I finally got my B-25 crew up to 450 and I was shocked it costs 126 GEs WITH the 30%?discount.

Question to the more experienced players: In your opinion, does the game remain fun after the early tiers?

Right now I'm flying Tier 2 planes for the US, Germany, and Britain, and I want to know if it's worth spending all the time grinding for Tier 3-5 planes, or if I should just stick to lower levels.

Tier 3 - YES. Best tier in the game IMHO
Tier 4 - I would say yes. There are lots of players now, so you shouldn't encounter jets there. It'll require LOTS of grinding though, first tier when you start to pay attention to "free" money, so it's up to you.
Tier 5 - No(t right now). Few planes, jets are not as fun as earlier planes, huge costs for repair and research. Next major patch (should be in August) will add more Tier 5 planes to all nations and maybe they'll make things better in regards to grinding as well.

Is there any point to finish those single payer mission? I finish one that claimed to have research point reward, but not awarded any afterwards.

Late tier 3 early tier 4 is the sweet spot. Once you hit a BR of 5.7 or higher, it starts to get progressively less fun.

You keep all the mods, certifications, crew points etc... you accumulate so you can always just go back to tier 2/3 if you don't like the high stuff. The higher the plane the more research and money they make.

Played a bunch last night!

Mostly got my ass handed to me though lol.

Love the P40 since it has bigger guns but I was just getting outflown and shot down a lot.

Some seriously good pilots out there man!

Next patch looks like it will have a ton of stuff in it. Hopefully someday soon they'll fix the BR system, which will allow for better matchmaking.

There's some real informative posts in this thread. Just wanted to say thanks!

Also, I really want a war cucumber now. I'll never know why.

Is there anything better than taking out about 10 ground targets in an A20..getting shot to pieces while flying on one engine, one wing dipping lower than the other...tail gunners (still alive..I've invested in their vitality) taking out 2 planes...then a 3rd decided to pounce while you are nearly at the landing strip..and the AAA takes him out...then you land, somehow, and while repairing another plane swoops in to take you out while you are 'helpless'....

Helpless.???!!! HA....my turret gunner shoots the guy down while Im sitting still on the runway.

Buy that man a cold beer!

Im currently having more fun with this (and Blacklight) than anything in recent memory..and so far I haven't spent a penny on them.

IT IS COMING

news_1-41_t-34-42_com.jpg

Only the best will reach the heights! The new Arcade mission with both air and ground vehicles is now available for you to try in the “Events” mode. Gain the opportunity to use aircraft in a ground battle by defeating three enemies.

The same matchmaking rules are applied to the regular Arcade tank battles and this event, so we advise you to choose both aircraft and tanks with similar Battle ratings in your crew slots before joining the mission.

Since this will be the first time we are trying this new respawn system, we will really appreciate your feedback. Did you like the new event? Is there a way to make it even more fun to play? Please share your opinions on our forums!

The War Thunder team

Massacre starts July 15th, 14:00 GMT

Looks like I'll have to start researching those anti-aircraft trucks now!

I wonder how exactly this new respawn mechanic is going to work. Do you need 6 kills to use two aircraft? Or can you use as many as you want with only 3?

I think the idea was to actually have tanks to fight at the start of a round. Given how powerful aircraft are, most people were skipping tanks as their first spawn, so they changed it. I imagine your other aircraft will be unlocked after 3 tank kills.

I don't really see a way for aircraft and tanks to ever be balanced correctly in arcade. Some of the attackers like the IL2s and dive bombers are absolute murder machines that can reload bombs in under a minute. There isn't anything a tank can do about it.

So maybe have really aggressive AI AAA + constantly spawning fighter cover for your own tanks or something of the sort.

Its probably in my head, but after the last update I've literally been shredded by everything that hit me...one hit fires, one hit tail flies off, pilot dead...my A20 that has on many occasions limped back to base is cannon fodder...

1- Did something change in the update making damage more realistic (I concede that the damage Im taking is more realistic than before)

2- Did I just cross a barrier going from the mid to high 2's in BR to low 3's where more potent cannons show up and punish stupid decisions

Im guessing its the second one...and I need to either adjust or just fly p36s and p40s with my a20.

Definitely the second one. Guns are the thing that brings most frustration on any plane: either yours are too small or opposition's are too big.

On the other news, another low bow to the capitalistic fiends from Gaijin

I hope to shoot it down one day.

I just keep using bombers as it is much easier to grind RP, but the problem is now my fighters are not keeping up, which is mostly used in domination only.

Maybe I shouldn't insist on maxing all the planes, and just use whatever with appropriate BR.

Match making seems to be better though as I no longer see ridiculous planes like Yak 9 when I am still using I 16 and MiG 3.

New promo going on, good chance for some of you totally free to play guys to get premium vehicles just by playing

You never know when they will just decide to stop selling these premium vehicles. There are a bunch that aren't for sale but that you can still use. So if you have the time, definitely work towards them. They earn lots of lions and train your crews fast.

Grind missions for those crappy planes is ridiculous. If you value your enjoyment of the game, don't attempt the 125 wins.

After the tank missions were so reasonable, there is no reason for these to be so insane. The emphasis on winning just makes players hate each other.
