Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King (3DS) |OT| Cor Blimey!

I used Angelo for all game up to the ultimate boss, and quite honestly it doesn't matter. 90% of the time he should be without weapon healing or using the Timbrel of tension. Bows are good to get MP back during the game and they have a nice AOE attack for random encounters, but I doubt you'll notice a difference at this point (Actually, swords may be better for Metal slimes hunting). Charisma is largely useless except for Sarcastic Snigger (Which I never needed cause Morrie). I think I had like 50 unspent points at the end of the game because I just couldn't decide what to get lulz.

As for Yangus, I noticed he actually levels faster than the Hero (I'm pretty sure he was 1-2 levels over him in my game) but he will stop getting a lot of points after a certain level, Jessica is the same. Definitely get Executioner, even if you need to waste skill seeds because it makes hunting King Metal Slimes easier. Yang's best skills are in Axes and Humanity, but alas he's just can't compete with what Morrie and Red offer.
Executioner has definately made KMS farming seem a little faster, although I'm not entirely sure if it's psychosomatic since more often than not it just boils down to if the slime flees or not first thing - if it doesn't flee the Executioner skill certainly gives another chance along with Lightning Thrust on hero for a quick kill, but no matter how much agility I stack on my team the order can still vary wildly between encounters so every encounter is still dependent on it not fleeing first thing.

All the charisma/charm type skills I've never found a use for on any character. Maybe because I like to be over-leveled? It just feels like each fight is over before any status effects get going - even buffs/debuffs are more a matter of style over substance. It's just as quick, if not quicker for me to just mash attack. That's my fault though, I always over-level and hoarde in RPGs. I just wondered if I was going to miss out on anything if I dumped everything into the wrong skill set.

I just finished the (first I guess) fight with
Dhoulmagus at the Dark Ruins.

Can someone tell me how far I am?

Jesus Christ, why the fuc does Jessica get attacked all the time?

I read that some monsters attack the lowest HP party member (I think she has the lowest max HP), some others attack the party based on their line-up position.

I can't really stop playing this atm, it's really gotten under my skin again. I wasn't going to do a lot of the side quest stuff, but as I got closer to the end I really don't want to put it down so probably will. I've already done Dodgy Dave's trades and taken photos of the gold slimes as I've come across them - barely done any other photo quests so still have all that to do.

I think I'm massively over-leveled with everyone sitting level 80-85 range and I'm just about to fight
Leopold in the mansion behind Sevella Cathedral
, I just had a lot of fun grinding slimes and the casino, exploring etc.

It's made me want to pick DQ7 back up after I finish just to continue the DQ high, I wasn't really feeling it but hope to finish it after this. I don't know what it is about DQ8 it's just such a great game, even in this great series it stands out. :)

I shot people I like more for less.
Finished the post-game stuff I had left tonight. Some of those bonus bosses were rough. Had fun with the game overall. So glad they brought this and VII over. As a Nintendo+PC guy I hadn't gotten the chance to play either before the past few months, so glad to finally get a chance to rectify that.

Started playing this today. Why the hell is the dialogue text so blurry? Playing on a N3DSXL.
It's not as blurry on a regular n3DS... But yeah you can tell.

At least it's not like freaking Xenoblade X on Wiiu where it was so freaking tiny. I don't get how devs don't notice or care about the font size on games...

Gah!... This post-game boss run dungeon is ROUGH!

I was doing fine until Sir Leopold and I had to look up the strategy to kill him, which I did but with only 2 party members alive which I wasn't having since I was using the XP bonus item, so it took me about another dozen retries until I got favourable RNG and killed him with all 4 party members alive. I'm now at the Evil Jessica one and it's equally as rough - I guess I'm going to have to use Red for the first time so that I have at least 50% of the party to work with.

Damn my 64GB card corrupted on me tonight and I lost my DQ save!! I was really just starting to enjoy the game! I had just gotten the boat and was sailing around, like around Lv 22.

I have a backup back at like level 9!!

Tip: Don't forget to get up your save file on PC guys. :(

These Memories Lane bosses are testing my love for the game, lol. I'm upto Dhoulmagus, Marcello was really rough.

At this point I don't feel these bosses are fun because it's more about RNG and having a certain line-up or attributes. Everything I read online says you need Magic Burst with Jessica, well I didn't have any skill points in bare fists, so what now? Luckily I had a stock of skill seeds I could use and a couple of runs through the final Dragovian boss got me a couple of super skill seeds so I got Magic Burst for Marcello. I don't really like the RNG-ness of these fights, I feel like it should be about your skill in buffing and keeping up with the fight rather than having certain spells or party members active.

I've taken a break and been doing the photo quests which has been a nice breather.

edit - almost forgot I wanted to ask if it is worth making a second Timbrel of Tension? I was reading about the Skull Helm needed for it, you can use it to help with stealing items with Yangus, which I've never done but might if I need a specific rare item.

Do you have a Candy Cane from the daily download? If you do, you can use that as an alternative for stealing. The candy cane will make Yangus do 1 damage with each attack.

It's dropped by Cannibox, Clockwork Cukoo, Iron Scorpion, Magic Marionette, Mimic, Mimic King, Robo-Robin

IIRC there's only 1 you can have at this point. You can get it from the reformed bandit in Pereguin Quay's inn I believe. The 2nd is in some cabinet in the Ruined Abbey later on.

I found this to be a helpful link, I keep it bookmarked on my 3DS browser so I can pull it up, it has the reciepe list as well as links to tell you where to get each item: http://dragon-quest.org/wiki/List_of_alchemy_recipes_in_Dragon_Quest_VIII

Although I read somewhere, probably this thread, there are exclusive 3DS recipes that are not going to be in that guide.

In addition to the list, here's an alchemy guide that lists recipes as you go through the game, and recommended recipes as well:

I must've missed it then, will go back and look through to find it :)

Really enjoying my time with this game though I feel it's a little easier than the PS2 release? Still being able to see how much EXP til next level is gonna be without going to a church was a good move.

So is the Nintendo server still down for everyone trying to download DLC items? I missed the candy cane, when it goes back up do you get them all or just the most recent item released?

I want that candy cane for fighting metal slimes!

Yeah, it's down for me all morning.

I don't think you can get missed items, a friend of mine connected for the first time a week or so ago and didn't get the Candy Cane, so.

Also, unless you are at the very start of the game, there are probably better options for Metal Slime hunting with Yangus.

How useful is Yangus' item and money steal abilitis? I mean do you just steal crappy items and 5 gold at a time, or is it actually something you'll use for the rest of the game?

Finally finished the Memories Lane boss dungeon. What a crapshot those final few bosses are! The penultimate one was total RNG. I felt his arsenal of attacks was pretty unfair, having the cool down tension attack and the knock down one. At this point Hero is basically just casting Omniheal every round so if he got knocked down, it's probably quicker just to restart than get into the Kazing loop.

Final boss was a joke since I already saw that
Snooze
= win. But again it felt like you HAD to use that method due to how hard he hit. So I didn't really enjoy the final few fights of this dungeon due to how linear they felt. Maybe a better player could find more inventive ways to kill them, but I still think RNG plays a huge part since what attacks they do determines if you're restarting or not.

All I have left is a handful of mini medals which I have no idea where they are since I scoured this game top to bottom. And the final photo challenges which I won't be doing because, well, even with 93 hours on the clock of this game even I have better things to do, lol!

I don't think it's particularly useful personally. I didn't find the need to farm any items from monster drops in this game since you can buy almost everything. I did get a fair few drops from enemies any way, got lucky when farming KMS (for XP) and Pandora's Boxes (for the photo chalenge) and got about half a dozen drops of Orichalcum which was about the most useful thing I ever got from enemy drops without trying.

What should i max out for the cast again?
For yangus i am maxing axes and humanity, jessica i am maximg whips and staff

Whats the best casino game to play to get the most tokens?
Definately roulette. Someone posted an image a couple of pages back of how you should be betting. It's very easy to get tons of tokens from just a few wins as long as you have the 25,000 to bet. Just reload if you lose. This is at Baccarat, at Pickham I just played Bingo until I got enough tokens for a few goodies and enough reserve for Baccarat.

Re: Skill points, I would say it's pretty much essential that you pump up Courage on Hero so he gets Omniheal. Everything else is down to preference imo. I had Angelo with Swords, Hero with Boomerang/Spear, Jessica Whip/Staves, Yangus Fisticuffs and Sythes (and later Axes for the Executioner skill).

Thanks for the info.

I got the ship and made it to
Argonia? I dont remember going to argonia first o_O
In the ps2 id make my way to baccart, get the sabrecat THEN i went to argonia.
Did i take a wromg turn somewjere or somethig?

At any rate i think i am gonna go farm some goldmen since i need at least 10k gold for the items in argonia

Seriously having enemies on screen made this game a lot easier imo
I was addicted to liquid metal slime hunting for almost an hour....

Bestiary complete :)
I only had to look up 3 or 4 monsters, the rest I just walked around the regions with missing monsters at night and ticked them all off. Not surprising most of the missing ones were night owls.

Now to track down those last few mini medals. The last time I went this far to get a complete game was with Ni No Kuni, I'm usually happy with reaching the end of the story, but something about DQ8 I just don't want it to stop!

Not sure which comes first, I did Baccarat quite late this time I think because as soon as I got the ship I went exploring.

Just finished the Black Citadel and have a load of Orichalcum what are the best items to cook up in the pot? Hero has skill points in spears and courage, Yangus has axes and humanity, Angelo is bows and charisma and Red has fans and thievery or whatever her skill is. Any equipment advice would be appreciated.

Playing the ps2 version (hope that is allowed) and trying to beat vermilion dragon but keep getting my arse kicked. Any tips? I'm at level 42-43.

Edit: BTW I got all the mini meals (only 110 in PS2 version) and got the flail of destruction. It's kinda weak so seems pretty useless?

Go massacre some more metal king slimes

The thing is, I can't find any. I tried that hill that's west of Alexandria tower but nothing seems but there was only one after hours of searching. And it ran away. :|

Are they much more rare in the post game stuff?

Slime Hill is actually northwest of Rydon's Tower, not the Tower of Alexandra. And you can only reach Slime Hill once you obtain the
Godbird's Soulstone
.

How are navigating menus in this game? Coming off Dragon Warrior III on Game Boy Colour, Dragon Quest VII felt unplayable on the 3DS with the menu lag.

Woohoo I finally made it Barcarat (the casino town!). I had to look it up on a world map online, I went to a few different locations when I got the boat. I didn't realize you had to travel so freaking far from the start point to get there!

What's the best weapon to train my Hero up on?
I've always used Boomerangs and Spears on Hero, never tried Swords as that's usually Angelo's department and I didn't want two party members with the same weapon.

Boomerangs are very helpful for regular groups of enemies because it hits everyone (unlike most whips which just hit a group of enemies, not all) and Spears are good for dealing damage to a single target/bosses and for metal slime farming - there's a skill that if it hits ignores defense, basically a OHK for King Metal Slime farming.

Does the german version have the the other PAL language dubs (english, italian and so on)?

This is actually a question about Dragon Quest VII, but the OT of that game is somewhat dead:

In Dragon Quest VIII for the 3DS you can use the L and R buttons to rotate your characters in those directions, is it the same for DQ VII?

My circle pad doesn't go very well left or right, and the L and R rotation in DQVIII make this not a problem at all.

Yes, I started up VII to make sure and L and R do rotate the camera. If you are moving forward you can steer your party with L and R.
