Damn... Mario Odyssey wiping the floor. Nintendo has done a great job of making games like Mario and Zelda, but I think they're doing an even better job of giving them the spotlight they deserve lately. Really happy to see so many positive reactions to Mario + Rabbids as well.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Mario and Rabbids pulling in two is great.

Well deserved for both Odyssey and Rabbids! The latter was the biggest surprise (and most crow eating) for me at E3.

Definitely deserves it.

On a separate note, what happens to the handheld categories when the 3DS is eventually phased out? Does Switch kind of absorb that or does it become mobile gaming-based?

So what the heck does ''best original'' even mean. Like, a game that is not really a sequel even if it's a long running franchise like Mario and DBZ?

Damn straight.

Wow that is a Mario E3 if I've ever seen one.

Mario + Rabbids is most certainly not in the general Mario platforming franchise. Mario has a lot of franchises at this point.

It still rubs me the wrong way. Even more so with DBZ being a nominee, like it's different but I wouldn't say DBZ fighting game is the best ''original game'' by any stretch of imagination.

And of course the yearly mandatory nitpick of: Battlefront best online multiplayer but Destiny 2 is the best PC game?

It's amazing how Nintendo has turned everything around in a year. Last year people were deeply concerned about the fate of Nintendo and the looming reveal of the NX but now the Switch is selling crazy well, its already got the biggest GOTY contender with at least another on the way with Mario in October. With a lot of hits already like MK8D, Arms, Splatoon 2, Mario+Rabbids, ect. what an amazing first year the Switch is having and man I hope Nintendo can really keep up this momentum. I never thought the GOTY awards will likely involve which amazing Nintendo IP was better.

Metroid Prime 4 ensuring the GOTS streak to continue? One can dream...

Happy to see Kingdom Battle getting good press, I am looking forward to it more than Odyssey... Mostly because closer to release.

It's not "most" original game. It's "best" original game. That is to say, a game that isn't a sequel. It doesn't need to be a new IP, just a new game that isn't a sequel.

Shadow of Mordor was a new game, despite being set in the LotR universe.

Spider-Man is a new game, despite being based on a comic book character who has had several similar games.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a new game, despite fighting being the bread-and-butter genre of DB games.

Etc. It's a catch-all category, sure, but there's a clear distinction between a sequel and a non-sequel game.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
Shocking.

OP should post the rules again. The game had to be playable.

Nintendo had one of their best E3s ever this year. Really excited for almost every one of their announcements - Mario, Yoshi, Kirby and Mario + Rabbids all look stellar.
