What a race... I still can't quite believe what happend in the end. Le Mans does it again. I hope Toyota comes back with a fury next year. I know I will be there next year!

Considering their budget is tiny compared to Audi and Porsche I also hope they come back in full KillCrushDestroy mode.

Also Fuck Ford. I hate Ferrari but that 82 will always be 2nd on the podium to me.

I idiotically switched to the F1 before this ended so I'm fuzzy on the details. Did #5 cross the finish line after 24 hours (i.e won the race), but because of some dumb rule didn't make it back to parc ferme in an alotted time due to a technical issue?

No.

With around 5 minutes to go, the Toyota lost power and had around 40 seconds advantage.

Instead of pitting, it crossed the finish line and stopped on the straight, so it started the lap.

I'm studying in Le Mans for a month starting Wednesday, gutted I'm just missing this. Do they have any other race events I could go to?

Also, if anyone's in Le Mans, if you could share your experiences of staying there it'd be great. Any decent restaurants, nightlife, etc?

Anything major happen in the final two hours? FoxSports1 cut to golf, and I wasn't awake to switch the channel to record the end :(

I still can't believe what happened at the end of this race. I've grown up in a VW/Audi family and was obviously rooting for Audi to win another, but that hope was crushed early on in the race.

The fact that Mazda is the only japanese automaker to win at le mans (the 787b is really stunning, even to this day, might be my favorite to win the race) and that Toyota only had 2nd place finishes in le mans history to show off with really made me hope for a 1st place finish from them this time around. I still feel empty inside.

But hey, Audi's podium streak continues.

My first time at the track, and to see this unfold...

I was standing just before the Ford chicane at the end of the race, rooting for the number 5 because that Toyota was so close to winning and very deservedly so. Until I suddenly saw it limping, sounding sick. Couldn't believe what I was seeing, poor Kazuki.

Le Mans is such a great experience, it's just an incredibly huge event. Seeing the sunset and the cars drive into the night, and the main straight at night with the pits buzzing with activity, it really was amazing. I'll go through my pictures and post some.

Just got back (had to miss the last 8 hours of the race) and watched the highlights.

Utterly heartbreaking. Just, no words for the poor bastards. :(

There was a vid on youtube, but it doesn't have any commentary over it, which makes it useless. There are almost certainly proper ones for previous years though.

I wouldn't expect much, WEC is still pretty miserable when it comes to media production.

Check out the WEC thread, some of us watch the series and can answer some of your questions.

Final update:

Nakajima describes Toyota’s painful final moments of Le Mans

Kazuki Nakajima has described his experience inside the cockpit of the #5 Toyota TS050 Hybrid that had been on course to win the Le Mans 24 Hours before its heartbreaking final lap stoppage.

Having held a comfortable lead right up until the final five minutes of the French endurance classic, Toyota had been set to finally seal a first win at La Sarthe before Nakajima began to slow dramatically on the penultimate lap.

That allowed the #2 Porsche driven by Neel Jani, Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb to clinch the German manufacturer’s 18th Le Mans win, with the #5 car of Nakajima, Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi eventually being excluded from the result for taking too long to complete its final lap.

Speaking afterwards, Nakajima said at first he was worried he had done something to cause the failure.

“I felt there was something wrong with the car one lap before I slowed down,” said the former Williams F1 driver. “I suddenly lost power.

“The engineer told me not to use the kerbs and just keep driving without raising the revs. I just thought, ‘what did I do?!’ That’s how it was.

“Then I just lost power so suddenly. We tried almost everything, but nothing worked. I just cruised the final lap.

“I don’t know what caused it. I panicked. The pit must have panicked as much as I did.

“But if 100 million people were watching the race around the world on TV, I think we now have 100 million more Toyota fans.”

Boost pressure issue

While Toyota issued a statement on Tuesday saying it had yet to find out the precise cause for the failure, the team’s general manager Hisatake Murata revealed that Nakajima’s car had a boost pressure problem.

“The #5 car had a failure in the boost pressure control system,” he confirmed. “I don’t know if it’s [because of the] turbo or not, but the data shows no boost pressure control.

“There was no sign of anomalies in the data before the problem, or at least not just before it.”

Murata added that the bitter experience would make Toyota better prepared for next season, the Japanese marque having vowed to return to La Sarthe to avenge its defeat.

“We went through so much during this year’s 24 hours,” said Murata. “It would have been a great story to tell only if we’d had a happy ending.

“Most of the problems were ones we had never experienced before. Next year, we will be better prepared, getting rid of problems before we arrive at Le Mans.”
