I played through what I thought to be the entirety of Chrono Trigger when I was 16 and I don't remember Schala at all.

I even followed one of the GameFAQs guides to go through all of the sidequests.

Am I insane or is it at all possible that I missed all content revolving around them?

She's pretty important to the main quest, but it's in Zeal which I kind of found to have most of the forgetable main characters so if it's been a while since you last played, it's understandable

She's really forgettable so I don't blame you. Doesn't matter how integral to the story she was, she was probably the least-interesting character in the whole game.

Having played Cross before Trigger, Schala was arguably the character I took the most notice of in the game. But yeah her on screen appearance was pretty short despite being integral to the plot

How anyone can forget her when her music alone was amongst the most memorable in a game full of amazingly memorable music.

She's important to the plot but has barely any characterisation, so not that surprising.

Antiquity/Zeal was kind of meh all over. Medieval is the best

Yup. There was lots of discussion about this back in the day in games mags, but as you say, it was nothing but a mistranslation lol

I definitely remember her since she was the focus of Magus's plotline and Magus was my favorite character as a kid.

As for that line, I wouldn't call it a mistranslation because the original line and the translation are so different that it doesn't seem plausible that you would write something that different on accident. It was most likely an intentional change from Woolsey.

Why the hell he did that I don't know. Would make for a nice interview question!

I never understood why people were furious about this, i know it's a mistranslation, but within the context of the game it can be interpreted as Lucca's mom, you're told this at the end of time, so it could be anybody at any point in time, sure, when you meet Lucca's mom she's already paralyzed, but the fact that you get the chance to save her, means that "someone close to you" could be her and it's a prompt to do the quest to save her from her accident.

Well, a magazine i had as a kid sure believed that was the case anyways!

Because the line is still there after you save her. From memory, all the other lines disappear when you complete the quests. It made it seem like there was another quest left.

I can understand how you would forget an NPC after playing a game a very long time ago. It isn't as though she's core to the whole story or something (Just important for a piece of it). There are many, much more memorable things in the game.

But that's why it irritates people. Because your interpretation (Or the magazine's), is wrong. It's what I would have assumed as well, but it doesn't go away after that quest.

It's just a vague hint that there's nothing left to do but finish the game, which it doesn't really suggest at all

The thing about the line is that it never goes away, even if you clear all the sidequests (including saving Lucca's mom) so it always seems like there's one more to do, and certainly the rumor I remembering going around is that it was a save Schala sidequest.

I wouldn't say I was angry about it, but when I learned that it was supposed to be something along the lines of "talk to your party members for information about sidequests in their time period" it made perfect sense.

I've always felt the opposite about CT, that it's a game where the most interesting characters tend to be NPCs. A good chunk of the playable cast pretty much delivers exposition and hits a personality note or two.

I totally disagree. Frog's storyline, and Magus' are fantastic. The rest are good. I think maybe only Ayla's is weak (Though the prehistoric storyline is really interesting). There are some really fun NPCs, but the main cast is excellent.

I do think Frog and Magus are by far the most developed of the playable characters (and of course their stories are intertwined). The rest of the playable cast I find pleasant enough, but not all that interesting.

Eh, I agree with him, although like you said Frog and Magus were the ones who stood out. I liked Robo and Ayla as characters, but Crono, Marle and Lucca didn't do much for me.

Frog and Magus being the most developed makes sense, as they are the most important party members to the overall plot of the game. I mean, the first half of the game is set up as you having to stop Magus from summoning Lavos, and a major part of that whole scenario is Frog's past with Magus. Then of course you find out Magus' past in Zeal and he just becomes more central to the story.

I'll always have a soft spot for Robo though. His theme song was pretty much rickrolling before rickrolling was a thing.

I think Marle's storyline could be seen as forgettable, as in a lot of ways, it's just "rebelling princess" which isn't exactly original. But it does have some touching moments in regard to her family that elevate it.

I think Lucca could have more overall character development, but what they do with her family is pretty interesting, and a lot more emotionally involved that most games ever get with their characters.

I disagree on Crono though because he's the player stand in, and yet they kill him! You ultimately walk up to Lavos and sacrifice yourself,
but the idea of they main character killing himself to save everyone else 1/2-2/3s of the way though the game is kind of bonkers, and it's made a lot more impactful when you see how it affects the rest of the cast. They project a character that's meaningful, even if you thought Crono was just a stand in.
That's always impressed me, especially given the year.

Oh, I didn't mean to ask that to be snide, it's just that Schala has a VERY big part in Cross's story and ending without actually being in the game for more than 30 seconds physically.
