Otome Community Thread: Happiness isn't a limited commodity, my love is boundless!

Well, western otome titles are all on PC, there's just Hatoful Boyfriend on Vita, but that's a PC title first and foremost.
Hatoful was made by a Japanese indie team. It was just translated into english fairly quickly.

But yeah, basically all western otome games are indie and on PC only. The ones that aren't are mobile games rather than handheld.

Amnesia is Japanese and it was ported to PC and mobile. Was originally Vita only.

Ah woops my bad. Not sure why I thought it was also Korean...

I'd love to see more western Otomes.

Yes, I would too... but I'd really like to see western otome that stand up in their western identity as well--I love Japan and Japanese-made games and anime but I don't want western devs trying to give me Japan or Japanese-style art and culture. A lot of the western made otome I've seen have a very weeb-ish vibe or the artwork is not so good...

And I hope you do follow through and make that otome someday :'D you've got my dollars!

And I was mostly referring to western developers making otome games.

Playing through Code: Realize for the first time now. I know I'm late.

Also, rant: why do all these games HAVE TO be vita? From development point of view it's so much easier, faster and cheaper to make pc games. Are otome games really not that popular on pc/steam?

???

-> "Referring to western developers"
-> In a post about a Japanese-developed Otome game

:p

(I can't think of any western-developed Otome that are on Vita).

I heard it cost 100 hg... and it's not up for iPhone yet ;3;

Ah, my mistake. Just checked, and it does indeed cost in-game currency to unlock. So still technically free, but you may have to work for it if you don't have spare hourglasses on you or you don't want to grind.

It is out now for iPhone by the way! I had 500 HG left so I'm good on that front but I won't be starting it til tomorrow since it's gonna make me miss a whole day.

I've really gotta get back and finish up the rest of the routes; I'm only on 3/5. >.> Ah well, it'll be a goal for next year. That and buying/playing Code: Realize.

I only played 707's route on MM and I felt like I can easily spend a lot of money on this, being impatient, so I decided to ditch it, before my wallet feels the pain... :( Damn mobile games.

I ended up spending money on Mystic Messenger, but I hate the free-to-play format so much that I deleted it off my phone after I finished. I downloaded it because it's Cheritz, but I don't think I'll bite if their next game is free-to-play. I can't stand not owning something I've spent money on.

I can't blame you guys... this is my one exception. I downloaded Samurai Love Ballad Party and it's the most nakedly, aggressively monetized game I've ever played in my life. There's like twelve diff kinds of in-game currency and you have to buy items with it to proceed with the story... so since I refuse to pay any money I'm progressing at a snail's pace. Shame because the characters are fun (tho the sprite artwork is at Rob Liefeld levels with the anatomy... wtf)

Nightshade has also been delayed to Q2. Most likely April.

Just in case anyone grew too hopeful about the localization being decent.

TA needs an editor. Badly.
Well let's take a look at their editing process so far.

"Oh this thing? It's nothing. I just bought it from some overseas merchant....... why, do you want it?"

"What? This thing? pfft. Its not much. I simply bought this from a merchant overseas. Why? Do you want it?"
Hey look, since the first time they put that line out there they've actually managed to add in a spelling mistake! :D

At least this time they managed to release two pictures separately rather than merged on top of each other (yes, I know that was a cheap shot).

I keep forgetting that TAISHO x ALICE is a real thing. I remember they had a campaign for it somewhere that looked less than legit? (The Beastmaster company in disguise or something?)

So it's this only a PC download, or will it be on Steam, too? Don't see a Steam page for it, yet. I just hate when games describe their games as "PC" rather than actually meaning "Steam-only", usually.

How did you only manage to play 707's route? You have to finish one of the base ones to unlock his and Jumin's...

I'm actually not in the same boat as you guys with MM's free-to-play model. I love having the conversations as they come up, and rushing through them would just stress me. Sure, it takes longer to finish a route, but I've got plenty of stuff to do in the meantime.

That said, I'll be very unhappy if Cheritz's next game is also F2P (or on mobile in general). :(

A (probably dumb) question: is the Christmas DLC available during non-Christmas periods? Dunno when I'll be able to swing back around to the game, and I'd really like to play all that they offer.

It sure is! I'm gonna finish 707 and unknown's Christmas routes once my VIP package comes in so I can call as much as I want. I broke down..

Guuuuuys! Guess what I got in the mail today! :D I got a Christmas card from Cheritz themselves!! :D :D

SyDEr9c.jpg

I think these must have been sent to VIP members; it mentions them at the top of the card to the left on the back.

EDIT: And in other Cheritz news, they've been donating mad bucks to three different charities, all because of Mystic Messenger's success.

Cheritz has been developing and publishing exclusively female-oriented games with the motto of ”Make female gamers happy." The mobile game Mystic Messenger has gained wide popularity from female users across the globe, from Korea to North America and Southeast Asia. The game has set an exceptional record of achieving 2.5 million downloads without a marketing campaign or external investment. It also ranked number 4 on Tumblr's 2016's Top Video Games list following Overwatch and Pokémon Go.

Cheritz CEO Sujin Ri has stated, ”We hoped to make people feel happy and warmhearted through Mystic Messenger. We see the game's success as a gift from our users who really sympathized with our goal." She continued, ”The game industry is fiercely competitive, but we wanted to show that companies and consumers can make contributions together to the world through games."

”We are always thankful for the support our users have shown us. Through this donation, we as developers hope to better other people's lives along with our users," revealed the staff at Cheritz. - See more at: http://www.free-press-release.com/n...harities-1483506845.html#sthash.1Y2dNuy2.dpuf

This is very cool and it makes me feel happier about the f2p thing and how much of my money they've taken. I'm still waiting for my VIP package!

Really happy to see that Mystic Messenger paid off, they have been very generous with rewarding people free hourglasses with each update and fix they deployed, and personally I think they have been totally reasonable with their restrictions and bans (people got banned for manipulating their phone time to make all the chat rooms happen).

I am so glad to hear that the less vocal part of the community did end up spending money on the game and generated them enough revenue to pass the kindness on.
I was able to unlock all stories for free with the hourglasses they kept sending to early adopters, so I just bought the complete phone card in the end to show my support and appreciation for their work on the game, even though I hardly used it. I called 707 a few times - it's CRAZY how much voiced dialogue is in this game, hidden behind the extra phone calls.

Now, if they hire actual localization and translators next time, on top of the really great voice actors, I'll go with any new F2P shenaningans they might come up with. I just hope they put more VIP packs up for sale next time. :/
(SO JEALOUS of your Christmas card, holy sheeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!)

In other news, I got back on Lupin's route in Code Realize, playing through it at an absolute snail's pace on the way to work and back home only every day.
If I keep up being that slow, I won't run out of Otome to play until CollarXMalice, which interests me most out of the upcoming releases.

I hope Spike Chunsoft is localizing the game and releasing it on both PC and Vita in the West. All that along with a LRG print would be a dream come true.

"Available in both a 15+ and adult's only version, this is an otome title where our protagonist has total control to literally buy the man she wants with her wealth."

Sold.

Where are you getting that quote from? Is Sekai Project doing the adult version?

I hope they're considering the PlayStation Vita if they intend to create an entire brand for otome.
It'd certainly make sense given where the titles and audience is, but given how slow they are when it comes to Vita they may be too late.

I haven't heard of that game.
A while back, the Japanese indie developer Ossan Club decided they wanted to make an otome visual novel to suit their tastes. That meant removing the thin, youthful, and beautiful characters so often found in otome titles and replacing them with gruff, muscular middle aged men.
(Hardcoregamer Article)
Huh, okay, go on.
I can't help but feel that the elf is cheating if that's their focus, but okay.

Look's like the creators ran an indiegogo campaign to localise it that failed pretty badly last year. I guess Sekai must have stepped in after that.
It's a very weird game to start building a "brand" with, mind you.

Reading the mini profiles in the campaign kind of makes the guys sound like they're probably not worth having the heroine buy them, but I'm curious at least.
Brian looks like a smug so and so, I'm mildly interested in lording my monetary prowess over him.
The screenshots look kind of... phone shaped... though :|
I'm not overly fond of phone stuff so that makes me far less interested.

I'm all for older LIs, but some of those characters are stretching it :p.

It does seem like an odd choice for their otome game though.

I just wanted to drop by to say that I'm in the middle of my first otome title, Code:Realize on the Vita.

I'm actually quite surprised by the quality of this. I enjoy narrative-driven games with nice art, music, and stories, and my friend said I would probably enjoy this (not sure it matters, but I'm a straight male in my early 40s who likes playing/trying just about all game genres). I do find it to be a little "overwritten", like lots of the conversations could be much shorter, but perhaps that's just a common quality of games like this.

I'm 7 chapters in, and it feels like I'm heading towards its final arc. These characters are quite likable, although some of the solutions to their problems have been a bit too convenient, but thankfully they weren't major plot points... just ways to get out of certain situations.

I don't know if it's otome, but I ordered the first Steins;Gate because of this getting me interested in VNs. Curious to see what else the genre has in store.

Edit: I just noticed the avatar above me is Cardia. Nice timing! :)

I assume it was cheap.
That or they have money to burn.

Sounds like your friend made a pretty good pick with their recommendation.
Always good to see people willing to try out new genres too :)

Many/most otome games are visual novels, but not all visual novels are otome games.
Steins;Gate isn't otome, but it is a very well received visual novel. Hope you enjoy it :)

Welcome! You're in luck because, short of a disaster, 2017 is the year of VNs! There are plenty of (upcoming) VNs and hybrid VNs and on Vita to boot. If you're ever in need of recommendations we're here to help.

So I've actually been following the progress of this game on twitter for a while now since I saw that campaign, because as a fellow indie dev, grown-ass woman, and otome fan I felt like it was important to support this project. My one concern... <_<;; they seem to make a lot of porn as well (audio tracks and I think maybe something with pics too? I'm not entirely sure), which whatever, but I notice that some of the subject matter is some real... dark shit. Yandere stuff where you've been drugged so you can't move with tags like "oral assault" and something that seemed to suggest some kind of watersports or suchlike.

Anyway my Japanese is too poor to read most of the links they post but I saw once one in English that said something to the effect of "these are lousy suitors" like it was warning you not to expect a happy ending and then also something about extreme fetishes being depicted and now I'm like slightly concerned about getting blindsided by something crazy like that. But I really do want to support their work and I'm hoping Sekai Project picking them up must mean that it can't be anything that gross, maybe it's just like BDSM or something.

Welcome! Curious how you find the romance as a straight guy. Does it grab you? Is it just kind of extra character background for you? Does it make you roll your eyes? You can't speak for everyone I know, but I'm curious!

EDIT: Oh God I just looked at that indiegogo page again and one of them is a pervert necromancer...

I hope it's not his route.

Hey, welcome and thanks for sharing your impressions! I'm curious to know whose route you end up on, do you have a guess or a favorite?

I am sure you'll enjoy Steins;Gate! Did you ever play 999 or Ace Attorney?
If you find that you like or somehow have no issue with the Otome aspect, Hakuoki is a very cool story driven Otome game. I hear that a lot of people like the history based approach in it - at least I learned a lot about Samurai.

Hey guys! So... 8D;; around summer 2015 during a severe otome drought my extreme thirst and exasperation with some otome heroines led me to put my money where my mouth is and toss my hat in the otome ring myself. Our trailer went up today and while I've been nervous to see what the general public thinks I'm most nervous for my otome GAF boos' opinions!! I hope you guys will enjoy it ;3; <3

This is super cool! I really like the art. I'm assuming PS4 only? Will definitely check it out either way when it comes out :) You've got some pretty big English VAs on board, I'm really impressed!
