DF: PUBG performs badly on Xbox One - and X

PUBG on Xbox One starts up promisingly enough with a decent, attractive front-end, but once you've moved on from character creation to your first in-game lobby, you're instantly besieged by low resolution textures that seem to be failing to stream in properly, combined with performance just above or below the 20fps threshold - depending on whether you're playing on Xbox One or its significantly more powerful 4K counterpart.

Moving onto deployment into the game's single map (the PC's second map is en route), performance continues to be a struggle, kicking off with a prolonged stutter before moving on to 15-20fps territory as the transport plane flies above the map. In terms of first impressions, PUBG is borderline horrendous - an assault of low quality artwork, jarring pop-in and disappointing performance. Input lag also feels off - whether that's down to deadzone issues on the analogue sticks or the variable frame-rate remains to be seen (it's something we're looking into) and in this respect at least, it's the same story whether you're gaming on a standard Xbox or the X.

Does the situation improve once you're deeper into the gameplay? Well, a 30fps cap with correct frame-pacing is in there, and there are areas of the map that can yield an agreeable enough experience, when gameplay does indeed hit the target frame-rate. However, there is very little consistency overall. An extended journey across the landscape in a jeep can play out smoothly enough, with a flawless 30fps line. Meanwhile, entering a house, opening a toilet door and exchanging fire with a lurking assailant can see frame-rate dip to 20fps for no reason we can readily come up with.

PUBG is indeed enhanced for Xbox One X, and although we've only had time for a cursory comparison, the improvements are substantial. First of all, native rendering resolution jumps from 1080p up to full 4K. Secondly, texture detail gets a significant upgrade - it's still far off the standards set by most console titles, but it's clearly a massive upgrade compared to what's served up for base Xbox users. Additionally, foliage draw distance also gets a big, big boost on Microsoft's 4K console.

Its really sad how it run.

Granted its in preview and all and maybe a few patches in it will be a great game but as it stands now its pretty bad.

not a surprise.
this game and ark should be forbidden on consoles

unoptimized amateurish mess

release when it when its finished
I will never buy an early access game on pc again let alone on a damn console.
shame on microsoft for green lighting this shit .

Preview or beta or whatever its still out and people had to pay $30 for this game and if they want to charge people to test their game they better be ready for the criticism when it runs like it does.

Well...I guess it runs ok during gameplay (on the X)? Trying to find a positive here. I guess the tech wizards from MS who helped port the game over couldn't exactly re-write the code to not be so CPU-heavy.

I wonder which part of the next-gen consoles will be severely underpowered. I bet it won't be the CPUs again.

A poorly-optimized CPU-bound game with a huge map and 100 player servers. Can't say I'm exactly surprised. No question the jaguar is the bottle neck on the X

Is the game free since it's in beta/preview? Or is it like Ark, where you still have to pay for it? If the latter, then it's totally fair game to judge performance. People are spending money on it.

Looks like we should stick to Fortnite...I remember watching Twitch streamers get upset at this game when it released on PC because it was dropping frames on their "beast" rigs.

Hopefully they can improve on this soon as it looks like shite right now.

its a game in development, to judge it now is a bit crazy.... and threads like this is probably why more devs dont do early access.

It's a game they are selling though. With frame rate drops into the single digits, parts of this game seem almost unplayable, at least based off the video.

The only disclaimer on the store page is buried at the end of the product description and says "Game Preview: Game is unfinished and work in progress, may change over time, and may not release as a final product." I feel like they should make it blatantly obvious to people that this game PROBABLY won't run well at least until it is more stable. Then go ahead and update the store page. Especially because early access on consoles is such a rare thing. I think MS rushed this out to beat the 2017 deadline, and to try to make up for a lack of new "exclusive "content.
Buy the game if you want, it's your money but this seems pretty dirty to me.

Sounds unplayable on normal Xbox One. Bad but playable on the X

What would happens when output is set to 1080p on the X ? Is it any better ?

It baffles me how badly optimized this game is on PC, yet they put resources into the xbox port and a brand new map/assets. The game is very fun when it works, but optimization should be top priority.

I`m not surprised. While playing games like Hitman, the Xbox One X didn`t handle huge crowds of people very well.

As I said before, the game cannot get 60 fps on PC on the lobby and the drop. Sometimes it even drops in red zones.

How the hell was the X gonna get better framerates than a PC? (Even decent fps)

It did run better for me anyhow but its still not good.

There isn't a setting for this is there? The X auto outputs at highest res and downsamples right?

Anyhow...this video has opened my eyes on the performance side of things...it's very rough. I hate knowing it's that bad because I am having a blast playing it. At least it's native 4k right.....right?

I am hoping for some frequent patching and optimization to keep players interested...

Why is a game that popular run like jank on every platform?

And people want to give it GOTY? lol.

I have no problem with the performance on my 1700X/16GB/GTX1080/@1440p. But yeah i haven't played this game for almost 2 months.

Little bit overhyped to me.

The game is in EARLY ACCESS

The problem is that they are hyping up this game. It has to be their biggest game for a long time. They've even made a commercial around it. They just don't care if it runs like shit at the moment. They just want to have the game first. What else do they have to offer in the coming 6 months or so?

To me..this is the funny part around it.

Ive never played the game but is it much like fortnight?

Its like Fortnite in the style of a Battle Royale game where 100 people jump from a plane last man standing wins.

Other then that theres no building aspect, game tries to look a little more realistic and there are a ton more items in PUBG.

That is actually expected - PUBG is the most sold, most viewed and most active game in the recent past. Being an early access just gives more time to reach the performance they aim to while letting players taste every bit of improvements. I remember 6 or so months ago, it run like crap even on i7+1080, big improvement since then. I expect to be the same on Xbox, Microsoft definitely wants the game to run as smooth as they can asap.
Been playing the past couple of days on the X and it's absolutely terrible as now performance wise. On the other hand, this game feels like no other gameplay wise, so good.

It’s the fact that Microsoft shipped in their own specialised team to help get the most out of the consoles, as well as The Coalition (Gears 4 team).

With both teams working on it and it turning up in this state, even at “early access”, it is a problem.

True, but the X SOC the cpu is 30% clock improvement over standard One, and than something like another 30% improvement from the memory controller and cache improvements. According to this article the resolution is 1080p and 4k. I would have gone with 900p and 1440p.

If the game is available to buy then it is fair to judge what you’re paying for.

If it’s in a near unplayable state it shouldn’t be released at all, they can only play what’s in front of them.

Tbh early access should never be a thing. We know PUBG as a concept there’s no advantage on releasing it unfinished unless they just wanted some extra money over Christmas, that is the ONLY reason. Games never used to have to be half baked and released and they don’t need to be now. Release it when it’s ready.
