Why is Pierce Brosnan's Bond era so heavily disliked?

I never knew Pierce Brosnan's Bond movies were hated so much until I started visiting certain parts of the Internet (*cough* GAF *cough*). I kinda grew up with Brosnan as Bond. Watched all his Bond movies, and also even played the video games where he was Bond (especially Goldeneye). So I guess you could say I'm kinda biased. His era of movies and games introduced me to the series. He basically IS Bond to me.

I just feel like his movies aren't as terrible as everyone makes them out to be. Like, the only one that could be considered bad would probably be Die Another Day. That movie was a bit too ridiculous. Even a legitimately good movie like Goldeneye is starting to get retrospectively hated on. Goldeneye is usually considered to be great, but now you have some people going "Well, the only reason why it was good was because it was originally meant for Dalton". The World Is Not Enough is also seen as a bad movie, but I just don't really understand why. It wasn't amazing or anything, but it was at least decent. Could somebody give me an explanation as to why TWINE was such a bad movie other than "Well, Denise Richards was in it, so it's bad"?

As someone who never really had a huge problem with Brosnan's movies, I'd like to hear a solid explanation as to why they have such a bad reputation. Is it a retrospect thing? Were they always viewed this way even when they came out?

He's the Bond I grew up with. I'm a fan of his Bond movies, even if they did get worse and worse. Only one that has a memorable villian for me is Goldeneye. For me, Bond is all about the villian.

I 'grew up' on Brosnan's Bond and even as kid I didn't enjoy it. I wasn't discerning enough to realise the movies were bad but I just didn't find Pierce Brosnan cool. As an adult, I realise that the films are garbage especially as his era was immediately followed by the best Bond film, Casino Royale.

Great Bond- one of the best imo-, but fairly bad movies. Goldeneye was really good, the rest were trash or worse.

His movies just never latched on. Die another day is too absurd, tomorrow never dies is dull as sin and dated, and The World is not Enough is fucking horrible. It might be my most hated bond film.

He had one GREAT movie and was a good Bond, but his films in particular were really bad

THey haven't aged well.
Goldeneye was fine, a campy Bond movie, but the three that followed were shit. And then Casino Royale came out and introduced the concept of a mostly serious Bond movie to millions of people and everybody realized it was much, much better.

It also gave us this horrible special affects scene:

I blame Tomorrow Never Dies

James Bond heads to stop a media mogul's plan to induce war between China and the UK in order to obtain exclusive global media coverage.

Like what? Is James Bonds superpower to generate villains with the most convoluted plot ever?

Not a bond fan but I really enjoy Goleneye (the film) because of the game, liking Brosnan and his Bond and liked Sean Bean's 006

I heard the Brosnan Bond films after GE get pretty cheesy, so I can see why his films aren't looked back on with fondness, but because of my love for GE, Brosnan is my Bond

They relied too much on gadgets an spectacle. Ironically he wanted his Bond to be more like what Craig is doing with the character but the studio said no.

He was a great Bond, but that era just had shit writing. Dude got hosed.

They aren't good films and Brosnan wasn't a good bond.

??
Brosnan was a much better Bond than Dalton or Craig or even Moore. Probably second in my book after Connery. He's smug and sophisticated and he looks great in a suit. I mean, what else do you want?

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
He's great as a pervy washed-up Bond in The Matador. Really underappreciated movie.

I can't tell you why other people dislike it, but I dislike it mainly because only one of the films is unambiguously good. Goldeneye was a strong start, but then TND and TWINE are both bad (aside: I like TWINE a lot more than TND but this is apparently an unpopular opinion), followed by the spectacular fuckup that was Die Another Day.

I guess, OP, the difference is simply that you think the two middle films of his series are better than a lot of other bond fans do. I mean, I'm sure most of the average moviegoers who saw those films thought they were fine. They weren't critically thrashed or anything. But the internet will often have stronger opinions about things than the mainstream will.

I saw TWINE in theaters and man I don't even remember it. Couldnt live up to the hype as the movie that follows Goldeneye. I never seen the one after that, but I saw bits and pieces of Die another Day, and its pretty cheesy, but I kind of like it. I have no doubt its a mess, but it had some scenes that were alright.

They started off great with Goldeneye but disappointed after that. That being said, Daniel Craig's Bond films haven't exactly been uniformly stellar either. I'd probably take any of the Brosnan Bonds except Die Another Day over Spectre, and I'd even take DAD over Quantum of Solace.

I like Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies, particularly the premise of the latter.

Don't really care for The World is Not Enough.

I hate Die Another Day though...

I do wish they would have let him play the character like he wanted, which was in a lot of ways a prototype for Craig's bond instead of a callback to Roger Moore, but I dislike Moore in general which I know is an unpopular opinion.

Brosnan's my favorite Bond, and he has nostalgia factor for me because Goldeneye was pretty much my first Bond movie as a 90s kid.

But in no fucking way can I call the rest of his movies "not that bad."

It's not that he's bad, he was quite good, though the writers didn't do much with the character (goldeneye not included). It quickly got silly and became same old same old. Goldeneye was fantastic I thought. Some Craig defenders will say that his era of films had better action and fight scenes, but come on! Rewatch Goldeneye, specifically the scene when Bond breaks out of KGB lockup and proceeds to murder dozens of (technically innocent) Russians and escapes in a freaking tank! Tomorrow Never Dies was when things began to go downhill, though the film is quite enjoyable compared to the absolute shit that World and Die another day was.

Honestly? It's a bit of a rant, but I felt that Skyfall should have been a Brosnan film. I liked the focus on Bond and M, and her back story. If you rewatch Casino Royale, you'll notice that Bond and M's relationship is exactly the same as it was established in Goldeneye. They hated eachother! Their friendship was built up over time. I just think that Brosnan when it came to their friendship, among other things, brought more to the series (as opposed to Craig, who was just blessed with better writers and being younger in his run).

It's also got almost no action pieces. It's a looooot of talking which would be one thing if the plot wasn't completely fucking idiotic.

What? I'm pretty sure TND had more action than Goldeneye. They tried to outdo Goldeneye by adding in more action scenes, but the movie was just a bit more ridiculous because of it. Maybe I'm remembering wrong.
