Shariah Law is hart to morph into something we would consider acceptable, but they are moving towards it.

"This marks a watershed moment in the development of the cultural economy in the Kingdom," Minister of Culture and Information Awwad Alawwad said in the statement.

Saudi Arabia is undergoing an economic overhaul under Vision 2030 -- a blueprint for what the economy could look like over the next decade to reduce its reliance on oil.

The government hopes that opening movie theaters will act as a catalyst for economic growth and diversification, creating new employment opportunities and providing Saudis with a greater range of entertainment options

The Ministry of Culture said it plans to have 300 cinemas with more than 2000 screens by 2030. It was not immediately clear which movie genres will be shown, and whether men and women will be allowed to sit together..

There are cinemas in Iran, so it should work, with some censorship.

A number of Hollywood movies, e.g. "Some Like it Hot" reached USSR cinemas. (It was quite apolitical already, but they still had edited it reducing Marilyn Monroe's character's interest in money)

They had theaters in the 70s. Theaters were banned after a group of extremists physically took over the Grand Masjid in Makkkah. The government saw that as a threat and reverted to ultra-conservative rule.

And yes, we are able to buy/rent censored movies in public, but more importantly, we are able to digitally buy/rent uncensored movies from our cable TV provider a few weeks after their release in theaters elsewhere.

I remember watching Brave Heart on a flight to singapore where they weren't allowed to show violence, nudity of scenes with kissing etc. It was an interesting movie.

This seems so insane.
