Notch calls out Yogscast as "an isolated island of egos".

I don't care for Minecraft but it is weird to see a lot people here taking sides without even hearing from the Yogscast guys. Also from Notch's tweet it sounds like he witnessed none of the stuff he's complaining about but rather had it relayed to him by others.

Not really weird to me. Some people take Notch's word no matter what.

Nope. Even in a situation like this, he's entitled to the approach he took and will probably benefit long-term if his version of events are as accurate as they seem. He's not bound by some corporate creed or something. He is who he is, and he's rich and successful enough to act as he wishes.

It's not like he was aggressively attacking Yogcast. He simply called them for their bad behavior that seems like it was way out of bounds.

You're kidding right? He tweeted a number of highly damaging claims that as of right now are unsubstantiated. It is even worse when the people he is accusing cannot respond.

It really seems like he wasn't willing to go into details - except that the side he did not want to work with again was the Yogscast - but then Yogscast fans' reaction to him name-dropping them pissed him off enough to drop a few events, whether he experienced them personally or someone he knows did.

Because, come on, we can all agree that the majority of the Yogscast fanbase sucks.

That's just ridiculous.

Sure, he's entitled to do whatever he wants, but lets look at the two possible outcomes.

1) He was right. Though I see no way of proving this one way or the other, let's assume he is. Do you think he's going to gain respect or sales based on this event? Absolutely not. The rah-rah from fans of his is basically worthless in the long run.

2) He was wrong. Now he has a bunch of people mad at him and a good source of publicity for him no longer wants anything to do with him.

I understand he may have been personally offended. But it's unprofessional behavior. I recall there was some incident with a guy at Silicon Knights who also got a little too close to his fans. I'm not saying it's a golden rule, but at some point a creator has to draw the line at how much of his personal stuff he makes public.

I agree.

Fixed that for you.

Oh ya, they did those final fantasy 14 videos, those were probably the best thing they ever did, but I guess 14's terribleness kinda carried the videos.

Wait wait-- they did those? Those were some of the funniest commentary videos I've ever seen. I'm glad you pointed that out; at least I have a point of reference now.

Contempt For Challenge
I won't jump to conclusions about how Simon & Lewis may have behaved, will have to wait to hear their responses. Some of Notch's claims sound pretty fishy or out of context. What I know for sure though is that Notch's twitter tirade was extremely unprofessional, as is par for the course from him. His twitter account is extremely high profile because it's the primary source for all Minecraft news, and he's using it as a soapbox to launch personal attacks on people.

What Notch describe is people with a serious lack of maturity thinking they are somebody because of a certain Youtube fame.

Well, this is exactly what their videos told me. I totally trust Notch here.

Not to say Minecraft is popular because of them (it certainly became popular of its own merit), but Yogscast has a pretty huge following, it's hardly the best business decision to air it all out on twitter, especially when Minecraft has only just "officially" been released.

Everything coming out of Mojang at this time should be as positive as possible, now it's basically drawn all this negative publicity into it and possibly caused a split between people who follow Yogscast and those who side with Mojang.

If it turns into abit of a public argument, it does no good for either of them really. When you think of Yogscast, its easy to think they're just a little youtube channel and that it wouldn't matter to Mojang, but their videos get hundreds of thousands of views, their main story videos get into the millions. It certainly doesnt give them the right to act like assholes (if thats the case), but when they're such a good (free) source of advertisement for your game, it's something that should be seriously considered before making a twitter rant over it.

When I see how popular stuff like this really is I'm reminded of how many fellow Brits are complete dumb fucks.

Oh I agree, I think a lot of those subscriptions come from the charity work though as I recall seeing that guy on tv doing some sort of song for children in need or something.

The biggest surprise I took away was that they apparently have such a large and vocal fan base. Total biscuit I understand, does great work especially at trade shows and niche coverage as well as consistent coverage of certain titles but lately all I see from yogscast is somewhat creepy Minecraft narrative or Increasingly bland "let's plays" of very random games.

Yogs did have fantastic cataclysm beta coverage though.

Just checked out his Twitter.

Yeah, I don't know who Yogcast is, but dudes like this just don't help any arguments they (Yog dudes) might have.
Check out his videos, his style of sarcasm doesn't really translate to text. He's a smart guy and often does really in-depth, thought-out criticisms of games.

I bet Minecraft was/is more of an advertisement for Yogscast than the other way around.

These guys are just a bunch of glorified, dime-a-dozen Let's Play joke characters. Yeah, I've enjoyed many of their videos, but it was my enthusiasm for Minecraft that led me to their videos. If anything, Yogscast not doing Minecraft stuff would hurt modders more than Mojang.

All this isn't to say I think Yogscast are dicks. I'm going to wait and see what they have to say, but I don't think this'll affect Mojang too much, especially considering notch is a pretty transparent guy. I don't think he'd lie about this shit.

They called us "a bunch of nerds who don't know how to run a company", demanded that we pay them to come here (nobody else got paid).

A kid wanted them to sign something I had signed, and they said they'd cross it out and put "fuck you" there instead.
This sounds like the yogscast joking around to me. Inapropriate and stupid, but it's the yogscast after all. I can kind of see why'd they want to get payed too, concidering it's fucking expensive to travel to the US and they most likely aren't millionaires like Notch. I don't think the Yogscast-guys are innocent at all, but I'll reserve jugements until they've gotten a chance to respond.

"Internet fame?"

"Twitter 'battles'?"

God damn, I feel old.

I don't have any particular affection for Minecraft, and I have no idea who the Yogcast dudes are, but what I find troubling is when people make statements like "well, XXX is rich and successful enough to say and do what they please." No, that's not why they are free to say and do what they please. As human beings, we are all free to live our lives as we see fit, given that we aren't causing harm to other individuals. You don't have to be "rich," or "successful" to enjoy the right of stating your opinion to other people, even publicly on...Twitter. *snicker*.

I'm going to admit... I bought Minecraft pretty much solely on the back of watching the Yogscast. The first season really sells it.

Its really gone downhill with this whole shadow of Israphal or whatever though, it was hilarious when it was just them exploring the game and having fun, now its just like watching two people being forced to play a shitty RPG. I can quite easily imagine them being very annoying in real life, alpha male nerds are the worst.

That said the ending poem is hilariously awful.

I'm going to try and not sound horrible when I say this, but the aftermath of all this (I don't know what actually happened at the event itself) is quite possibly one of the most sad and pathetic things I've seen. There's a load of "YouTube celebrities" picking sides, this Totalbiscuit guy defending the Yogscast people, saying he "got them their YouTube partnership", calling other games video-makers who sided with Notch "shitty friends", etc. Then there's the horrible interview between the two parties which is as awkward as can be. And now there's threads about it everywhere.

Who are all these people with such hugely inflated views of themselves? Notch has done something hugely impressive, granted, but people making money by recording themselves playing games (including a game that Notch made!) and then acting as if they're big-shots. Horrifically cringe-inducing.

EDIT:

Minecon had more than just swearing problems anyway, referring to the joke of an afterparty.

SHOCKER - party put on by nerdy people for nerdy people is nerdy. As if this guy is some LA socialite who only goes to clubs with table service and $500 bottles of champagne. I'm a cynical Brit, and I think this guy is a cunt.

Yeah it was pretty bad. Maybe Notch was butthurt over it? Assuming he was writing that ending meant to be taken seriously.

That's pretty much my view on this whole thing. (I had never heard of "Yogscast" before)

One funny thing about all of this is that in some sense the egotistic party isn't Yogscast at all...

- they wanted to cross out my name
- they claimed I wasn't the only one responsible for Minecraft's success
- they critized my ability to run my company
- I am Notch and I am hella mad

Also any critisism on the F-Bomb falls to deaf ears when it comes from a man who made "I fucked your mother" jokes for a YouTube video just a day before.

Man I would be pissed if someone said they were going put an x over an autograph then put fuck you under it. That kinda shit isn't funny joke or not.

his game his rules.

Inviting people to your event and not expecting them to be themselves is silly. It's as if he invited them solely because he heard they were popular and never bothered to watch their videos since he seems pretty shocked at their behavior.

I actually don't think that's why the afterparty was a joke. It's more to do with the fact that the bouncers at the party wouldn't even let Minecon people in, instead letting in rich people, "VIPs" and women for them to hook up with. Even some Mojang staff weren't allowed in. Sounded like a massive douchefest to me, to be honest.

I think there's a difference between making a video with f-bombs in it, and telling a kid that you'll scribble out notch's signature and write "fuck you" there instead.

To be able to twist these events into this post you're either completely insane, have some overwhelming hatred of Minecraft/Notch, and/or a Yogscast fanboy. Either way it makes you look like a fool.

Well actually it seems the party was quite the opposite of nerdy: (from RPS)

"It was no fault of Mojang’s. They were told when they reserved the “XS” (bad pun shutter) night club at The Wynn Casino, that it was for the event attendees (21+) alone.

Well that didn’t happen at all, Dead Mau5 attracted every type of club douche and douchette you could imagine. They probably outnumbered the MineCon crowd 5 to 1. The casino/club staff and security, apparently not knowing or caring about the exclusivity of the event, just lumped us (when I say us, I mean both attendees and exhibitors) in with the overwhelming number of Jersey Shore clones (and treated us as such, I was manhandled by a few bouncers for, well I’m not really sure. Standing?)

To make things worse the place was several thousands over capacity. I waded through the dance floor to get to the other side and it was like a metal concert, I received a few blows to the head from stray elbows and such. One of my exhibitor friends was “kinda” puked on by a very drunk club regular. You couldn’t move, you couldn’t talk, you couldn’t get a drink in under 45 minutes from the bars unless you wanted to pay for $1,000 table service.

It was an “eff this” situation in minutes, and apparently the awfulness even touched up the MineCon big wigs a bit. One of Mojang’s staff was tweeting that they roped off about half of their group when trying to get in, and they were not allowed to enter the club. During the discussion with the bouncers dozens of scantly clad women were ushered in while they, some of the very people who had reserved the club and booked Dead Mau5, were told the room was overcapacity and that they wouldn’t be allowed in until numbers dropped.

In short, total failure by the Wynn Casino, and as Notch just recently tweeted: “We also learned who not to work with at Minecon. Shame.. :/” I can’t think he means anyone else other than them."

Really wish people would at least take the time to do some background research on the stuff they comment on before they open their mouths.

As for the actual topic at hand, I find internet drama fascinating and I can't wait for the next episode in this story to develop. Yogscast must have done something, whether intentional or not, to cause this kind of fuss, but Notch rally needs to get a PR manager other than that useless "Director of Fun" to help control him.

Nothing much will come out of this anyway, Yogscast are unlikely to lose subs unless the quality of their content drops significantly, and Notch, is well, just being Notch.
