Someone explain this to me:

Operating Income ---> $388

Income before income taxes - $252

Net Loss ---> $198

I understand the difference between operating income and income before taxes, what I don't get is how you can go from +$252 million before taxes to negative $198 million after taxes. Do they really pay that much in taxes? I was under the impression that tax is really lenient on corporations, like 15%.

Depends on the corporation. I know Apple pays 25% in corporate taxes...

Wasn't this one of those quarters where they were doing some sort of accounting tax adjustment sort of thing or something to that effect?

And, they've done the grouping of systems before - but then, so has Nintendo, in particular back when the DS came out and GBA and DS got grouped together, which was silly. So, not unprecedented with that.

But, no matter how they divide things (grouping PSP and Vita while splitting apart DS and 3DS), doesn't make the handheld situation look any better for them.

PS2/PS3 numbers combined? PSP/Vita numbers combined? Going by the numbers from last year, when they weren't combined, totals are down considerably.

edit: oh it was 12 million before? Says 10 million now.
So they are expecting to sell 7 million "PSP/Vita" in the second half of the year. Right.

Next quarter they'll be down to one column - PS1/PS2/PS3/PSP/PSV

If numbers are bad enough, maybe they'll add in all those PS Mobile enabled phones as well.

I believe I have this right, but it's quite late and I have a baby on my lap.

This year:
Code:
Console Ja-Mr'12 Ap-Jn'12 Jl-Sp'12 Oc-Dc'12 (2012 - YTD)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
PS3/PS2 2.5 2.8 3.5 - 8.8

Last year:
Code:
Console Ja-Mr'11 Ap-Jn'11 Jl-Sp'11 Oc-Dc'11 (2011 - YTD)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
PS3 2.1 1.8 3.7 - 7.6
PS2 1.2 1.4 1.2 - 3.8

A shortfall of 2.6 million units

So their handheld forecast was revised down again (16m to 12m to 10m)? I wonder what they'll revise down to next quarter?

Was the console forecast always 16m? Seems pretty high given the sellthrough we've seen so far this year?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Between the lack of divulging NPD numbers and now lumping hardware into groups, I don't get why Sony is so afraid / shamed to show PS3 or PSVita numbers.

Japan has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. 40.69% according to wikipedia.

Keep spending that cash Kaz.

Sony excluding financial services now has $5.5 billion in cash/cash equivalent and $11 billion in long term debt.

About at the point where shareholders are going to be much better off if Sony just becomes a finance company and sells everything else off. Share price would probably triple over night if they announced that tomorrow.

Reading around.
Bloomberg
The net loss totaled 15.5 billion yen ($194 million) in the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with a net loss of 27 billion yen a year earlier, the Tokyo-based company said in a statement today. That compared with the 15.6 billion-yen average profit of three analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sony maintained its full-year profit forecast of 20 billion yen while cutting its sales estimate.
Didn't realize some analysts were expecting a profit this quarter.

Unless I am reading it wrong, I'm not seeing a loss for the game division, which is great news. Sony as a whole is still in a ditch, though they seem to be very slowly trying to climb out; SCE doesn't seem that bad, at least. Hopefully they can start getting things in order soon around the rest of the company. Keep going, Kaz. It certainly won't happen over night, given the ditch that previous management dug the company into, but hopefully it will happen. Good for consumers if they do.

I won't get all bothered about them putting the PS2 and PS3 together. Seems understandable to me, given they are still selling the PS2 with the PS3, so it makes sense they would put the two together under one banner. Dropping the handhelds numbers are disconcerting, that is for sure.

Sony please don't make me pay a bloated price for the ps4. Please.

Gonna happen, at least bloated compared to the 720 if they launch at the same time with similar specs.

A delayed launch would allow them to get costs down a bit first and they should be able to have price parity at that point. Probably is whats going to happen. A lot less riskier than trying to launch at the same time, at a potentially higher cost.
