Media Create Sales: Week 32, 2017 (Aug 07 - Aug 13)

At the moment the baseline is what Nintendo delivers to the shops. Demand will only grow with more games, because at moment not even everyone who wants to play splatoon 2 gets a Switch.

Oh I don't disagree, I'm purely talking about how much they are able to supply. Demand has never been an issue with the Switch, unlike the 3DS pre-price cut. I'm willing to bet that every unit shipped to stores in Japan will almost instantly sell out for the remainder of 2017, and likely a good chunk of 2018.

The question then is, how many can they ship to stores in normal, non-holiday non-big game/bundle launch weeks?

Wait... Knack sold 400k? And then great games like Disgaea 5 don't even reach 100k...

It was a pack-in for the system at launch. Launch adopters had no say in the matter.

How do you even reach this conclusion? Their both collapsing at the same rate but the 3DS has always sold more.
3DS is % drop is way bigger than PS4 and right now it is 116k vs 91k.

More two or three weeks with 3DS having bigger drops and PS4 version will sell more weekly.

It could happen, and would be unexpected but great for PS4, however, at the moment the relative difference in sales is bigger than at launch (1.13 (1.15?) million to 950k versus 116k to 91k) so I don't see a strong reason to think this will happen yet.

I certainly wouldn't call a 7% difference "way bigger"
These 7% difference are based in different numbers... PS4 dropped around 100k and 3DS around 200k... that is why they are close this week.

With similar drop next week:

3DS 44k
PS4 40k

See?

Ok...but its still not a very significant difference, and like I pointed out above, last week the situation was reversed. Its not exactly a trend yet/

Let's wait next week... I was sure 3DS version will track way ahead PS4 version in the long run with the launch being close but if PS4 start to sell more weekly then it will be a big surprise to me.

Quick takes:
  • Splatoon 2 still at a steep incline
  • ARMS is still above 1 2 Switch (speaks more to the fact that 1 2 Switch sold very well for what it is than ARMS selling bad; I think ARMS has done well as a new IP fighting game; ARMS also costs more). 1 2 Switch drops from 9k to 3k in week 11; so ARMS might be able to have better legs at that point.
  • 1 2 Switch is back in the charts, so I was able to fill in a few of the blanks of the last couple of weeks.

[PS4] Nier: Automata - 401.186

Talk about surprises, its just a few hundred units below Knack, so its overall the 9th best selling game on PS4.

It should drop out of the top 30 fairly soon, thought it should still sell well there, by the time we get the top 100 update in January it'll likely have outsold COD: BOIII and Persona 5.

It should be the 2nd best selling PS4 game for the year, unless something surprises, but I really doubt it, unless Dynasy Warriors 9 or the new Call of Duty are really good and click with people.

To me it's interesting to see does the CoD having WWII setting hurt its sales in Japan (and in Europe). Although BF1 sold just fine despite having real life setting but maybe WWI is more neutral.

Sounds like you're preparing yourself to be "surprised" though

How is the PS4 version supposed to outsell the 3DS version at that rate again?

Everything they've shown so far makes it seem like they're focusing on the European theater as its typical for WWII games and those have had no trouble selling in Europe over the years.

It'd be interesting to see how Japan would react, sure, seeing how this is the first WWII shooter ever since the genre became truly popular in Japan, but unless they have you firebombing Tokyo or something like that its probably going to be received as the goofy shooter that it is.

Media Create Sales: Week 31, 2017 (Jul 31 - Aug 06)

Let's wait next week... I was sure 3DS version will track way ahead PS4 version in the long run with the launch being close but if PS4 start to sell more weekly then it will be a big surprise to me.

Just as an example of how much of this is statistical noise, famitsu actually shows PS4 version with a slightly bigger percentage drop.

I'm amazed at how close the 3DS and PS4 DQ sales are.

I thought PS4 would have been between 800k- 1mill at best and 3DS would have sold 3x that.

Oh yeah. Forgot that it was all about European theater with this CoD. Still regarding of European sales maybe I just remember wrong but back in a days when shooters were all about WWII US tented to have heavier part of the sales than with modern settings (just like WWII movies tend to make way more money in US than in Europe). Well i guess we will see now how it goes.

20./19. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 <RCE> (Nintendo) {2011.12.01} (¥4.571) – 3.353 / 2.802.588 (+19%)

This game refuses to leave the race.

Sure, I agree. The Wii U's LTD would be perfectly in line with my initial prediction this year. It is also under what he is talking about here. It just doesn't mean Nintendo will have supply for 400-500k in multiple weeks like they did for 3DS in 2011.

Wii U LTD in Japan is 3,3m.

I doubt Nintenso will ship anything less than 3,5m this year in Japan, maybe they'll go manage to go close to 4m if production continues to rise month after month.

So ARMS can reach 200k next week and seems to sell somewhat decently. Is that ok performance?

If it can continue to sell I would say that 250k before years end would be possible.

It already reached 200k since a long time on Famitsu.
250k will easily be reached. It will probably be at more than 300k with holidays bump and all.

Should have looked at both trackers...

I was thinking about 300k but was unsure if I would be too optimistic.

it was free with every ps4 at launch

Oh well, that makes sense then. Then it's a lot like splatoon 2's success story, only that people are actually paying for the game in the bundles and buying the Switch because of it.

Gosh, I'm constantly changing my mind on who is the superior tracker, this week I'm going with MC.

It's probably and very likely MC. Though in the end both only show us estimates that are closer or further from the truth. Only the Publishers themselves really know how much they sold but even they don't know how much they sold through to the customers(at least for non digital sales of course), they only know judging by the demand of the retailers.

I hope they release the DQXI 3DS/PS4 versions together on one cart on Switch. Call it ultimate edition or something. Would give some extra value for the wait.

Also, Capcom, please bring the great PW games west. You need any sales you can get. Thx.

As I'm saying though next week has the monhun bundle so numbers should be good, after that who knows but i think it is clear the 25k dolldrums are a thing of the past, i could buy a week maybe 2 boost from stockpilling but this is too sustained to be anything but an increase in production

Stockpiling theory is they held back about 20k for about 10 weeks. That's 200k. If baseline is about 50k they've sold about 140k of that stockpile since the sales went over that number 3 weeks ago.

Also, Nintendo clearly, unequivocally, stated without any semblance of ambiguity that production might increase in the FALL and beyond. I don't know why this has been so hard for people to understand since they made that announcement. Shipment in Japan increase in July and August (seeing this), production may increase in fall and beyond. Hence they were holding back shipments or they reallocated them. Anything but increased production, which could happen starting in the fall. They actually don't even promise increased production. They will work to ship as many as possible for fall and beyond.

Nintendo said:
Currently, we continue to ship every week, we are working to deliver more than one product to customers. Also, in July and August,
we will increase shipment volume this month, including continued shipment of "Nintendo Switch Splatoon 2 set".

For autumn and beyond, we will continue to work to ensure that as many products as possible can be delivered to our customers towards the end of the year, such as further strengthening our production system, we appreciate your understanding.

If they could have increased production in July/August why would they have differentiated July/August increased shipments from working to increase production in the fall and beyond?

Too tough with the dual screen setup. I think it'll be the PS4 version, a little worse looking, with some extra stuff tacked on to encourage double dipping (story context, playable character, bonus dungeon, minimedal village building, voice acting, orchestrated soundtrack, etc). Think along the lines of the extras added to previous later DQ ports like 1-3 GBC, 4/5 DS or 8 3DS. I wonder how soon Nintendo can have 64GB cards ready for production?

64G card is still kind of expensive right? I think Nintendo won't provide it until very late.

DQXI is 30GB on PS4.

Unless the Switch version is like a year away I doubt they'll include voice acting, because there would be a lot, the story structure of the game and the characters within it don't let up to add many characters, at least I can only think of one.

I said this some time ago, but I think releasing the game any later than this December won't be a good idea, and that it should be the PS4 version and the 2D version.
