Megaton Rainfall review thread

Even though Megaton Rainfall lacks longevity beyond its initial playthrough, and the visuals are certainly less accomplished than what we might expect, the intoxicating feeling of empowerment that the game foists upon the player is substantial.

Not only does the focus on breathtakingly epic spectacle render Megaton Rainfall as one of PSVR's better virtual reality exhibitions, but it also serves to coat its resoundingly solid arcade shooter sensibilities in an extravagant veneer quite unlike any other, rendering the game as the most essential PSVR shooter since Rez Infinite.

Megaton Rainfall is a nice surprise for everyone who dreamed about being a superhero. You will appreciate it whether you have a PlayStation VR set or not.

Megaton Rainfall may not be the most immersive VR experience out there, but it's a heck of a lot of fun to play and often jaw-dropping to behold. It's a new type of superhero game that comes up with an elegant solution to the problem of giving the player too much power and is always waiting to show you new ideas. In terms of sheer playability, it's one of the best games to hit PSVR in a while.

While the game might not offer too much additional depth or variety, what it does is one thing really well and we adore it despite the occasional visual glitch. In an industry where games are celebrated for dragging you around open worlds full of nothing while you perform menial tasks for little or no reward, we need games like this that offer unique experiences without all the additional fluff. That's not to say that this is a quick and dirty VR experience either. Sure, PSVR is still finding its way as a format and is full of one or two hour games that wouldn't cut it outside of VR but Megaton Rainfall offers a substantial challenge and if you want to literally be some sort of Superman/Jesus combo taking on massive robots then this is the game for you. If you don't? Lose my number.

At a purely content level, this is not a very rich experience, but the unusual gameplay and the highly competitive price (15.99 euros) make it an independent title not to underestimate.

While Megaton Rainfall may have bitten off more than it can chew in regards to the stage it takes place on, the alien-fighting action is a fantastic spectacle. Buildings crumble dynamically, shockwaves ripple the earth, zippy little enemies fly out of massive motherships and I even failed a mission once when a laser cut the entire planet in half. The enemies are constantly changing, with new ones showing up all the way to the final mission, and while there are only nine missions total each one is memorable. The only truly weak part is the story, which left me hoping there's an alternate ending somewhere I haven't seen yet. With the size of the universe away from Earth it's hard to imagine that all the action is focused on one little globe circling a yellow star on the outside of an arm of a pretty galaxy. More likely, though, it's the mark of a good game that, when the fighting is done and all that's left is score attack and Hard mode, it still leaves you wanting another epic battle against the destructive alien threat.

Downloading now, very excited to give it a go. I've stayed away from most media, so I'm unsure of exactly what I'm getting into, but the premise is something I cannot resist

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
How long is the game? I didn't notice it in the review.

I have been playing a review copy too, but unfortunately I’m out of town and won’t be able to put a review on my channel.

I absolutely love this game. It feels like a game that I’ve wanted since the PS1 and N64 days. It’s easy, it’s fun, and it’s impressive to watch when shit gets hectic. Watching people run, cars fly, buildings crumble, and city blocks get leveled, is all very impressive.

And flight... it’s breath-taking. And I love the volumetric clouds as well.

Damn fun game for the price

Will it be available for Steam VR too?

Just fyi, I believe I heard that is only for the standard 2D version, VR might be exclusive to PSVR for a few months, probably less than a year, not sure.

- On PC, are you going to support both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive (Steam VR)?
- I can't answer that question due to the contract with Sony. But I can say that I'd love to support both.
